Bleach: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Toshiro Hitsugaya

Toshiro is one of Bleach’s more popular characters. So with that in mind here’s what you need to know about him.

When it comes to the smash hit anime/manga franchise , there’s no shortage of popular characters in the fandom. It’s not limited to Ichigo and his friends; many fans love Ulquiorra, Yoruichi, or the ice-wielding child Captain, Toshiro Hitsugaya. This boy is a fan favorite, from his unique appearance to his cool-guy attitude and impressive ice-based zanpakuto, Hyorinmaru.

A lot of fan art and fan fiction are based on Toshiro, and while it’s easy to see that he’s an ice user in combat, there’s more to his character than „that kid with the ice dragon.“ When you consider every aspect of his character, it’s clear that a lot of effort was put into his design. What are 10 things that make Toshiro who he is?

Let’s talk about Toshiro Hitsugaya.

~ Captain Hitsugaya to Gerard Valkyrie (last page of Chapter 658)

The white-haired prodigy boy wonder, Captain of the 10th Division who was formerly the 3rd Seat under Isshin Shiba.

His powers may be of ice, but he’s one of the hottest Bleach characters. And as a straight male, i’m talking about his status of popularity, of course… exceptforhisadultformbecausedudelookshellasharpthatway.

He is definitely a top-tier character, and his powers are quite literally very cool. You know you’ve got great potential when one of the strongest Shinigami in history (and successor to the Captain Commander position) says of you, that within a hundred years, you could surpass him.

Of the more powerful and prominent captains during the Soul Society arc, Toshiro is one who never faced off against Ichigo, or even any of the other Ryoka. Instead, he was performing his own investigation, trying to expose what he suspected was the crooked workings of someone within the Gotei 13.

He’s the one who informs Ichigo of the Arrancar, and he was very active in the battles that took place within the real and fake Karakura Town. After everything had calmed down following Aizen’s imprisonment, Toshiro committed to training himself for an unspecified amount of time, in order to become much stronger.

As one of the captains who intervened to help Ichigo in the Lost Agent arc, Toshiro says, with a smile, „I’m glad he was the next deputy Soul Reaper after Ginjo.“

In the final arc, watching Toshiro lose his powers in the first Quincy invasion, was kinda a heartbreaking little moment as he cries out Hyorinmaru’s name, with no response. Fast forward to his epic return. Seeing him back in action, as well as his teamwork with Byakuya, was awesome.

I realize Toshiro is one of the top most popular characters not just in Japan, but also in the overall fanbase around the world. Me personally, i can’t really say i’m a fanboy, but i do still really like him; he’s a great character indeed, and i do see why fans love him so much. He’s a genuinely cool guy.

What form of his do you like the most? Soul Society and Arrancar arc, time-skip updated appearance, or his adult form?

It’s funny because he himself says, „Just between you and me… I’m not a fan of my adult self.“ Many fans, including myself, favor his adult appearance the most. I mean, c’mon, how could you not? How does a guy considered so hot retain powers of ice?!

Tell me your overall opinion of Captain Toshiro Hitsugaya.

He’s one of my favourite characters, but I always felt I was being hyped about him… FOR ALMOST 600 CHAPTERS.

I mean, he has always been noted as a prodigy but a lot of enemies gave him really hard times: Aizen destroyed him twice, needed help of two visored VC to take Harribel down, Bazz B needed just two fingers to take him down, got zombified by Giselle. Hell, even Shawlong gave him a hard time despite the power limiter.

The only rather powerful foe he stylishly crushed was Luppi, who was the new 6th Espada… Who then got one-shotted by Grimmjow. Then you can say he beat Gin Ichimaru in their skirmish, and that’s all. Until the display of his mature bankai, Hitsugaya never justified the hype we all had about him. Even a lot of people started to hate him for that huge hype that never went nowhere.

He beat Hallibel, fair and square. If it not for WW’s help, hallibel would have get her worthless ass hand to her.

A Bankai-less Toshiro put up a fight against Bazz B, and the vacuum ice blade almost kill bazz (the combination of technique is brilliant, which proved he is a genius).

He was zombified by Gissele after he One shot Cang Du the moment he get his Bankai back. Its not that Gissel fought him, Toshiro just fainted and lying down on the ground prior that, gissele was lucly to find a powerless living corpse (heh irony?)

He one shot shawlong once the limiter were released.

On top of all, he is the youngest to ever become a captain and achieve Bankai. Byakuya at his age were training under Ginrei, Shunsui at his age were sneaking up in the academy and got scold by Yamamoto, Soi fon at his age alraedy got „Yoruichi“ fetish, and so on…. Toshiro at his age took on an Espada (no.3 mind you!), beat her fair and square, and yet people stil bitching on him… Give the dude a break, none of the captain can took on an Espada level fighter (let alone a Sternritter) in their younger days like Toshiro..

He lived up to his hype more than enough for me. I’m gettin‘ sick of this stereotype.

I think he’s going to become the 3rd captain commander after Shunsui, his zanpaktou is ridiculously OP.

Captain Commander Toshiro Hitsugaya. I like the sound of that. Picturing it is even cooler!

As for the Shunsui remark, I’d say that there isn’t really much to split them as of the Gerard battle, never mind at EoS.

Well, ice dragons are pretty chill. In addition he’s one of the few characters who are just intelligent in and out of battle without plot powers like Mayuri or Urahara. I also like the mechanics of his Bankai and the obvious parallels with Yamamoto. Plus, his relationship with Rangiku and great banter with Byakuya show he’s a good laugh too. Finally, I love the variety of his Bankai-not a fan of one-shot Bankai like Soi-fon or Shunsui.

I prefer his SS design, for nostalgia more than anything else.

People complain about him getting too much screentime, but I think that’s only really true in the Arrancar Arc-he shouldn’t have gone to Karakura at the beginning.

Agree with u/Ikkaku_Madarame, he’s the likely next CC.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, much as I like his new ;s a little too strong. I’d have preferred that we saw what his normal Bankai is like now that it’s completed. We only saw one move vs Cang Du, and Gerard was offscreen for the most part. I also wish he’d gotten a full fight instead of brief snapshots vs Bazz, Cang and Gerard.

I thought he had plenty of opportunities… He got destroyed by Cang until Urahara released the bankai restoring hollowfication thing that crippled Cang and Hitsuguya one shot froze him. Bazz showed up and just beat him up. If Bazz can counter Yama’s flames with his burner finger then hes a bad match up for Hitsuguya. The entire Gerard fight was filled with snapshots and rushed. It made no sense to me to have Gerard survive the tri-team attack of Toshiro, Byakuya, and Kenpachi then get absorbed by Bach 2 chapters later.

That is why I don’t understand why people view him as one of the strongest captains. Hes listed as a prodigy because of where he comes from and having captain level reiatsu at a young age. However, I still would put the Royal Guard, Yama, Unohana, Aizen, Ukitake, Shunsui, Urahara, Isshin, Kenpachi, Ichigo, and Byakuya above his level (even if you count where he was at the end of the series). That wouldn’t even put him top 5. Maybe many years down the line he may surpass some of them, but as I said he is not even top tier by those standards. Right now I’d throw him around Shinji’s level. Mid-Upper tier.

That joke involving Toshiro’s older brother was hilarious. It’s hard to believe something like that could fit in to what was happening so well.

Until the last couple of chapter I thought that he would get neglected.. Before that he never showed anything significant really, like he beat luppi and that’s it? He didn’t really have much going for him before even though he had a ton of screen time..

But after his matured form he justified the hype around him.. He is easily top 3-4 in gotei(with that 3-4 being very close to each other), his only weakness is that he has to wait for his matured form and I don’t think it will ever change, he himself even says that he perfected his bankai so I guess It just how his bankai works, he needs some time to fully unleash his powers..

Apart from power he is pretty smart, and still very young..

Overall a bit overused IMO but nevertheless good character

I figure once he naturally ages to how old his bankai temporarily made him, it will probably be complete at that time.

Always liked him immensely!!! and loved his ’newfound brotherhood‘ with Byakuya (them bonding together over lame jokes about his height:P)

Very fond of the kid… well, he’s not a kid in bankai mode :P…. I still sometimes watch the Squad 10 version of Houki Boshi, it used to be my fave back in the day 🙂

Speaking of not fighting any of the Ryoka, I still wonder why the anime staff bothered with Hitsugaya vs Uryuu in the second OP 😛 😛

Speaking of not fighting any of the Ryoka, I still wonder why the anime staff bothered with Hitsugaya vs Uryuu in the second OP 😛 😛

„Hey, this fight would be cool to animate but it never actually happens. What a shame.“

I like Hitsugaya. Personally, I think him losing his powers and then becoming a zombie was some of Kubo’s best writing, taking risks with an incredibly popular character while not actually having him die off.

I honestly thik Kubo jizzes a little every time he gets to draw Daiguren Hyorinmaru, and I’m ok with that. He somehow finds a new way to make it look cool with every time we see Hitsugaya go bankai.

What form of his do you like the most? Soul Society and Arrancar arc, time-skip updated appearance, or his adult form?

Don’t forget about his slightly-Hollowfied form he used to defeat Cang Du. That one was neat. His adult form is the best, though.

Of the more powerful and prominent captains during the Soul Society arc, Toshiro is one who never faced off against Ichigo, or even any of the other Ryoka. Instead, he was performing his own investigation, trying to expose what he suspected was the crooked workings of someone within the Gotei 13.

This was the thing that endeared me to Hitsugaya initially. Like Ukitake and Kyouraku, he had the shrewdness to recognize that something was amiss about the orders being handed down by Central 46. He went against his duty to stand up for what he believed was right and to get to the bottom of a suspicious situation.

After reading the whole series, though, I’d say my favourite thing about Hitsugaya as a character is his relationship with Matsumoto. I like how much respect they obviously have for one another, that they can make fun of each other and dish out criticism so casually. To an outside observer, their bickering might seem like a sign of trouble, but really it’s just how they show they care. And when shit gets real and they have to get serious, we see that they’re an inseparable team.

It’s popular to criticize Hitsugaya for being „overconfident“ and I feel like people who complain about this are missing the point a little. They’re assuming that he’s like that because he legitimately expects to win every battle even if the odds are against him. I never really interpreted it that way. I see Hitsugaya as a selfless character who knows it’s his job to put his life on the line so that others don’t have to. He knows full well that he may not survive any given fight, but he puts on a brave face and puts himself out there anyway because it’s the right thing to do.

I think Hitsugaya struggles a lot with not being taken seriously because he looks like a child, and a lot of his stoic demeanour amounts to his attempt to compensate for that and his desire to earn the respect of those around him. So I don’t really see him as a character who’s „too big for his britches“, so to speak; I see him as a character whose power came into its own before he was really ready for it, and who works his ass off trying to fit into this role that was thrust upon him. I think it’s impressive that he does so well at it.

I also have a soft spot for kid characters and white hair (unless it’s Alphinaud; fuck that guy), so I guess it was inevitable that he’d be a favourite character of mine.

This is an awesome summary of him. Very nice, my friend; you have a great perspective.

His poem from volume 16: „The constant shower of the sun’s mane will erase the remaining footprints on the thin ice. Don’t be afraid to be deceived for the world is already full of deception.“

The ONLY reason he was as big as he was is simply because he’s been properly flushed out. The guy is given ALOT of screentime, fights often, and comes up with 5 strategies per fight. Hell, the guy has his own goddamn movie. He’s always front and center when characters are posing. The guy gets shoved down our throats worse than Roman Reigns. He always wins, always the hero, and eventually, that novelty wears off. By the end of the series, my opinion of him was already concrete.

Let's talk about Toshiro Hitsugaya.

10 He’s a child prodigy

Toshiro Hitsugaya is the youngest Captain to ever stand in the Gotei 13, and this boy didn’t get that rank through nepotism. He earned it, and Toshiro ranks among the most powerful fighters in all of Bleach. He stood up to Tier Halibel, one of the most powerful hollows alive, and nearly matched her blow for blow during the battle over the fake Karakura Town. He also dealt a serious blow to the temporary Sexta Espada, Luppi Antenor. He’s a hollow hunter all the way.

8 He Met Rangiku as a civilian

Not only are Hitsugaya and Rangiku adorable on screen together, but their relationship predates Toshiro’s Soul Reaper days. A one-shot from the author depicts Hitsugaya’s earlier life, when his inner ice power, Hyorinmaru, longed to be released, and it kept manifesting itself at random. One day, Rangiku met him at a shop, and urged him to join the Gotei 13 and put those powers to good use. Rangiku was already a member of Squad 10 at the time, serving under the one and only Isshin Shiba.

8 He Met Rangiku as a civilian

7 He’s Momo’s friend

There’s a good reason Hitsugaya and Momo hang out together on screen: they’re childhood friends! The one-shot manga chapter described above also shows how Momo was Hitsugaya’s friend in those days, and she went ahead of him to enroll at the Soul Reaper Academy. Hitsugaya wished her the best, but for a time, had no interest in joining, too. Much later, Hitsugaya was nearly consumed with rage when Captain Aizen exploited and nearly killed Momo, and Hitsugaya attacked Aizen for all it was worth. Hitsugaya is a bit cold at times… but he’s always there for his friends, much like Ichigo himself.

6 He has an adult form

For years, many Bleach fans must have daydreamed about what a grown-up Toshiro Hitsugaya would look like. Well, wonder no more! Late in the battle against the Quincies (manga only), Hitsugaya unlocks a bonus form, where he appears as a fully grown man, with enhanced ice powers. It was a desperate move, but Hitsugaya was up against Sternritter „M“ Gerard Valkyrie. It was ice vs the warrior of God, and this is not a battle to miss.

5 He’s shipped with Karin

Fans love to arrange relationships with anime characters, and this act is known as „shipping.“ Bleach has all kinds of pairings, and even Hitsugaya gets one! He’s often shipped with Karin Kurosaki, since they’re kind of similar: tough, serious kids who know how to look after the people they love. The fans call it HitsuKarin, and all kinds of fan art and fan fiction depict this pairing. Rangiku must be very happy for them both!

4 His power is still developing

Toshiro is still a growing boy, and this means that his Soul Reaper powers are still growing, too. That’s saying a lot, since Captain Hitsugaya is so powerful already, able to fight Espadas and survive. According to Shunsui Kyoraku, Hitsugaya’s potential for growth is almost limitless, and he believes that Hitsugaya’s power might exceed his own some day. Let’s hope so, because the Soul Society is never short on enemies!

3 He investigated Aizen

Sosuke Aizen’s treacherous plot was brilliant, but he didn’t quite escape everyone’s notice while carrying it out. Retsu Unohana soon realized that Aizen’s dead „body“ was a duplicate, and Toshiro’s keen intuition set him on the path to uncover Aizen’s scheme. Hitsugaya didn’t have the power to actually stop his fellow Captain, but it proves Toshiro’s intelligence and cunning that he caught a whiff of Aizen’s plan. He and Rangiku discovered the slaughtered bodies of Central 46, and right after Aizen stabbed Momo, Hitsugaya was on the scene.

2 He led the advance team

Not only is thus boy wonder trusted with an entire Squad, but he was also appointed to lead an advance team to the World of the Living. Why? Aizen’s plot was advancing fast, and Yamamoto was sure that deadly arrancars were on the way (which they were). So, the Hitsugaya Advance Team was formed, and Renji was recruited for the job, and Ikkaku and Yumichika came, too. Sensing that something fun was happening, Rangiku hopped right on board, and the Advance Team was ready!

1 He has his childish side

As mentioned earlier, Hitsugaya is mature for his age, but he’s really still a kid. We can cut him some slack, though, since he’s still growing, and he’s got a lot of responsibilities to juggle. For one thing, every time Momo calls him by his silly childhood nickname, Toshiro responds with an even more crude name (let’s not repeat it here). He sometimes loses his temper and throws mini-tantrums, and during the Advance Team’s mission, he stubbornly refused to stay in a house with Rangiku and Orihime (he thought they were too loud). There he was, sitting on the roof, watching the night sky… idly complaining how hungry he was. Quit being stubborn and come inside for dinner, Captain!

Appearance & Personality

Tōshirō Hitsugaya typically wears the standard captain attire without any additional accessories beyond the sash that hold his Zanpaktou. His most distinctive features are his spikey white hair and diminutive stature. Tōshirō is the only captain in the Gotei 13 that wears his sword on his back but rgis due to it’s size being almost as tall as he is.

Tōshirō is shown to be quite self conscious about his size and generally has a short temper when he perceives an insult regarding the subject. Otherwise he maintains a calm and dignified air, and keeps his cool in all manner of situations. He has earned the respect of his squad and is often the most pro-active captain when it comes to volunteering for duty.

He has a soft spot for Hinamori, whom he has known since they were young in Rukongai and generally sees as a sister.

About

age: Looks 13-15 years old But in Shinigami Years, About 100-150 years old.

Part of the Thirteen court Gaurd squads of the soul society

Tōshirō is short, with turquoise eyes and short, spiked, white hair, which tends to draw attention in the Human World. He wears a standard sleeveless captain’s haori with a green sash around his shoulders, held together by a round, star-like clip. The sash holds his Zanpakutō’s sheath in place on his back and is tied to it at either end. He sometimes walks around in his tabi. He is relatively young by Shinigami standards, and has the appearance of a child. In the Human World, he wears a black, short-sleeved, golf shirt and gray pants. He also wore the uniform of Karakura High School.

Before Tōshirō was a captain, his hair was not as spiky, with only a few spikes here and there. He also wore the standard Shinigami outfit, but with the addition of the 10th Division’s insignia on the left breast of his outfit.

17 months following Aizen’s defeat, shortly after Ichigo regains his Shinigami powers, Tōshirō appears sporting a hairstyle similar to that before he became a Shinigami, and a long turquoise scarf. His green sash has also changed to a thin chain, but still retains the star-like clip.

After training for an unspecified amount of time in preparation to fight the Wandenreich, Tōshirō’s hair appears to have grown longer, his fringe now reaching down to his eyes despite being held up by a newly acquired bandanna. He also appears lankier than before, with his robes loosely hanging off of his body.

After being zombified by Giselle Gewelle, Hitsugaya’s appearance changes dramatically. He now wears a white double-breasted trench coat with black lapels that is fastened by four buttons on either side and which has a badge with a six-pointed cross on its left breast. He has a black belt with a large buckle around his waist, slightly baggy white pants, and white boots with furry black liners. He retains the thin chain holding his Zanpakutō’s sheath around his upper torso.

Hitsugaya is generally mature and serious, in contrast to his free-spirited lieutenant, Rangiku Matsumoto. Despite their personality differences, he and Rangiku seem very close. Tōshirō is shown to be easily annoyed by others goofing off or drawing unneeded attention to themselves, as shown when he leads a team of Shinigami into Ichigo Kurosaki’s school. Hitsugaya hates anything that he deems childish as well as being described as something close to a child, such as an elementary school child. He is overly protective of Momo Hinamori, due to the fact that they were old childhood friends. Hitsugaya dislikes summer and warm weather in general.

Tōshirō’s favorite foods are watermelon and amanattō. He does not like dried persimmons. During his childhood in West Rukongai, he was so skilled with spinning tops that he became the local undefeated champion. He works very hard, but his motive seems to be that if he finishes quickly, he can return to his afternoon nap. He believes in the saying „children who sleep well, grow well,“ and hopes to grow quickly, a wish shared by his subordinates. Naturally, they do not voice this fact in front of him, for even regularly practicing this adage for so long, he did not really grow in height.

Hitsugaya is usually joked about by many of the other Shinigami in Soul Society as well as by his enemies. Hitsugaya has developed a cold attitude toward most people; he tolerates these jokes and goes on with his duties. Although he has shown anger towards jokes, he doesn’t take action against whomever insulted him unless they are his enemies. The only thing he cannot tolerate is not being addressed as „Captain Hitsugaya,“ or an inappropriate use of his name, as he worked very hard for the title, so he gets angry when not addressed as such. He does not address any other officer with their title, only their last names. The only person that actually calls him by his given name is Ichigo, who is constantly reminded to address him properly, and Hinamori, who is the only person allowed to get away with it. Hinamori tends to call him „Hitsugaya-kun“ and both she and Ukitake occasionally use „Shirō-chan“ (シロちゃん) — a nickname meaning „Whitey“ (Snowy in the English manga) in reference to his hair — in both cases without any repercussion. In addition, Karin and her friends call him by his first name and they are never given any rebukes for it. Jūshirō Ukitake often gives Hitsugaya candy and other food because „Jūshirō“ and „Tōshirō“ sound similar and because they both have white hair, making them both „Shirō-chan.“

During his duel with Gin Ichimaru, Ichimaru remarks that Hitsugaya is the embodiment of a heavenly guardian that would be reincarnated every few centuries.

Hitsugaya comes from the province of Junrinan in the 1st District of West Rukongai. There, he lived with his grandmother and Momo Hinamori. As a young child, Hitsugaya was a bit of a brat who liked to eat watermelons and poke fun at Hinamori. She called him „Shiro-chan“ and he retorted by calling her „Bed-wetter Momo.“ The two were close friends and Hitsugaya, despite being younger and much shorter than his friend, always felt that he needs to protect her.

Even at a young, untrained age, Hitsugaya could hear the calling of his Zanpakutō spirit, Hyōrinmaru. Despite this, he never told anyone and couldn’t accurately determine what was happening other than to assume it was an ever recurring dream.

When Hinamori left to become a Shinigami, he portrayed himself as happy to see her go, though it was more of an act than his true feelings. Her next door friends were scared of him, even though he had never done anything to them. His grandmother, „Granny,“ and Hinamori were the only ones in the district that weren’t afraid of him. His personality was supposedly „cold as ice“ or at least thought to be, and he often wondered if it was due to his appearance or Momo had been in the Shinigami Academy for 5 years, he began to notice how he hadn’t grown an inch. He noticed that Hinamori’s hair grew longer and she visited less often, seemingly having a goal in her life now. He also noticed that „Granny“ was getting skinnier.

While out at the market one day a shopkeeper, whom he was buying items from, was treating him disdainfully. He then meets Rangiku Matsumoto, who yells at the shop keeper for being rude to Hitsugaya and reproached him for his poor customer skills. When Hitsugaya turns around, he is knocked down by bumping into Rangiku’s bosom. She then yells at him for „lying there and crying about it and not standing up like a man,“ although it was she who had knocked him down in the first place. He then shakes her off and runs away.

Later that night, he has a vivid dream of a gigantic, icy blue, serpentine dragon with large wings and an echoing voice. This dream is markedly different from the previous ones, where he had only experienced sensations, but nothing substantial to what the meaning might be. This time, however, the reason behind the dreams not only materializes, but tries to tell him its name. Hitsugaya cannot hear him, however, as his voice is muffled by strong winds. He then wakes up in a cold sweat. Upon waking up, he sees Rangiku and is surprised to see her in his home. She immediately tells him to stop leaking his Reiatsu everywhere and to get some sleep. She further explains that his grandmother looks pretty cold, which causes Hitsugaya to notice for the first time that the room is exceedingly cold and affecting his grandmother.

Hitsugaya being told by Rangiku to become a Shinigami.

Rangiku then tells him he should become a Shinigami, stating that kids with power as strong as his need to learn how to bring their power under control. She explains that if he stays the way he is, his power will end up killing his grandmother. At first, Hitsugaya isn’t sure what she is talking about, but she calmly places her hand on his chest and asks him if he hears a voice calling out to him. She explains to him that once he has found that voice, he’ll understand how to control his power. She then notes that for that to happen he must become a Shinigami.

Hitsugaya being surprised by his grandmother’s support.

Soon after, he tells his grandmother of his intentions of becoming a Shinigami. Much to Hitsugaya’s surprise, she is happy for him. She tells him that she had always felt that he holds everything in because he didn’t want to leave her, but doing so was only hurting him and in turn, seeing him that way, hurt her. Hitsugaya then leaves to follow his own path with his grandmother’s blessing.

With Hitsugaya’s natural talent, he quickly entered the Shinigami Academy and graduated early despite his age. Hinamori continued to call him „Shirō-chan“ out of habit and felt she needed to protect him. Because of a promise she had made, she only began to call him „Hitsugaya-kun“ after he had achieved his Zanpakutō’s Shikai and was recognized as a Shinigami.

Hitsugaya being praised by Isshin for his hard work.

Hitsugaya eventually joined the 10th Division under Isshin Shiba, working his way up to the rank of 3rd seat. One day, Hitsugaya reported to Isshin that a Shinigami in Naruki City died two months ago. Isshin was aware of the situation, having knowledge that the 13 court gaurd squads was investigating the incident. Hitsugaya then informed him that two more individuals died in the past month, while investigating the cause. Concerned, Isshin decided to investigate the cause himself. Rangiku tried to go to assist him, but Hitsugaya stopped her, informing her that they were not strong enough to assist him. Afterwards he was also present to witness Rangiku’s rage towards their captain for returning to the Living World, seemingly on a whim.

Highly capable and knowledgeable, he quickly became the youngest of the captains within the Gotei 13 in the entire history of Soul Society. He is also a friend of Jidanbō Ikkanzaka, the West Gate Keeper, who taught him the „city rules.“

star: Child Prodigy: Perhaps the most astonishing trait of Hitsugaya is his intellect and natural talent. He is the most gifted prodigy the Soul Society has had since Gin Ichimaru, as shown from him entering the Shinigami Academy on his first try despite his young age, graduating from the academy in a single year with the highest written and performance scores in each of his classes, joining the Gotei 13 shortly afterwards, and then becoming the youngest Shinigami to ever reach the rank of captain. He has been called many things due to this. Renji and Iba have called him a child genius, and Ichimaru has called him the embodiment of the „heavenly white angel that blesses Soul Society once a century“. In terms of intellect, Hitsugaya is equally impressive. He was the first to suspect Ichimaru of treason, and saw that there was more to Rukia’s execution than what was being said. Shunsui, one of the strongest Shinigami in history, states that because he is a genius, within 100 years, Hitsugaya could surpass him.

Despite his age, Hitsugaya has repeatedly shown great instinct and intuition in battle. He is generally aware of everything in his presence, and is also able to see through most deceptions. For example, he discerned that Gin Ichimaru was more than he seemed, although he was not yet sharp enough to realize it was all part of Aizen’s plot. He is also a keen analyst, able to deduce the basic mechanics behind an opponent’s attacks, and quickly figuring out its strength and weakness to better counter it. As a captain, he is a capable leader. He is given missions from Captain-Commander Yamamoto to lead teams into the Human World many times to deal with threats. For example, Hitsugaya led the team sent by Soul Society that reinforced Ichigo’s group against the Arrancar. In battle, he has shown great instincts against incoming danger, as shown from his reaction to Harribel’s initial attack after releasing. After losing his Bankai to the Sternritter, Hitsugaya was forced to come up with several creative and unorthodox methods of using his limited Shikai capabilities, such as combining his Zanpakutō powers with Matsumoto’s Haineko to create vacuum ice blades, creating a wall made of thin, interwoven ice threads and even generating a field of icy mist.

Hitsugaya is masterful at swordsmanship, capable of utilizing his size to effectively counter and outmaneuver his opponents. His skill in swordsmanship is evident in the fact that he is the youngest Shinigami captain; he is therefore one of the youngest Shinigami to achieve Bankai. His skill in swordsmanship is great enough that he rarely uses even his Shikai in battle, of which he has shown great proficiency with. Instead, he relies on Hyōrinmaru’s sealed form, only using its Shikai or Bankai when things get tough.

Hitsugaya is highly proficient in Kidō, and is capable of performing high-level Kidō spells without the incantation. For example, during his battle with Hyōrinmaru, he used a level 63 binding spell without the incantation. He can also Use Hadou 31 and many other Kido incantations

Hitsugaya is highly proficient in Shunpo. Repeatedly in battle, he has shown himself able to block and dodge dangerous attacks.

Hitsugaya was able to knock out a grief-fueled Hinamori with a single blow, while in mid-air. However, he is usually seen using his Zanpakutō, so his skill in this field remains to be seen.

Tōshirō’s spiritual power has the same effect as his Zanpakutō, as it is an elemental representative of ice. His Spiritual Pressure is said to be very large and „cold“. Even before he became a Shinigami, his spiritual pressure was immense and uncontrollable, like Ichigo’s, and caused people around him to freeze, namely his grandmother, who lived with him at the time. This cold spiritual power of his reflects his attitude as well. He is also the youngest Shinigami to ever achieve their Bankai. He even had visions of Hyōrinmaru’s spirit before he attained it or entered the Shinigami academy. He is able to hide his presence well; on several occasions he manages to surprise Hinamori and Matsumoto with his sudden appearances, which leads them to complain about him „sneaking up“ on them. His Reiatsu is white.

Despite his young and lean appearance, Tōshirō has shown himself to be a resilient fighter. He survived the attacks of Shawlong Koufang while at 20 percent of his actual strength. He is also able to continue to fight after taking a direct hit by Bazz-B.

Hyōrinmaru redirects here. For the manifested spirit that appears in the Zanpakutō Unknown Tales and Beast Swords arc)

Hyōrinmaru (氷輪丸, Ice Ring) When sealed, Hyōrinmaru looks like a normal katana with the exception of the guard, which is in the shape of a four-pointed bronze-colored star. Its hilt is light blue, and sheath dark blue. The sheath completely dissolves when he draws his sword. The sword is somewhat longer than most Zanpakutō, at about 1.4 meters long. This makes it taller than Hitsugaya, preventing him from wearing it at the hip. Because of this, Hitsugaya instead carries it on his back by his green sash over his right shoulder.

Hyōrinmaru is the strongest of all ice-element Zanpakutō in Soul Society. As such, Hitsugaya doesn’t need water to be present in order for him to use its abilities. Hitsugaya’s control over Hyōrinmaru’s power is great enough to use its Bankai attacks while in Shikai, though with less control over them. The difference in ability between Hyōrinmaru’s Shikai and Bankai is very small; the true difference lies in the quantities of ice each form can create, with the Shikai only being able to create comparatively small quantities.

Hyōrinmaru’s release command is „Sit Upon the Frozen Heavens“ (霜天に坐せ, sōten ni zase; Viz „Reign over the Frosted Heavens“). In its Shikai, Hyōrinmaru extends slightly in length, and gains a crescent-shaped blade attached to its hilt by a long metal chain, which can extend greatly, if necessary, by force of will. The chain itself can be used for attack, or to entangle a target.

Shikai Special Ability: Hyōrinmaru allows Hitsugaya to control water and ice. His slashes create an immense amount of spiritual power which overflows from the tip of the blade, creating a flow of ice shaped like a Chinese dragon. The dragon flies towards opponents and instantly freezes anything it touches. Hyōrinmaru can create multiple ice dragons to attack an opponent from various angles. Hitsugaya can also direct his slashes towards the ground and form a wave of ice, which rushes over his opponents, overwhelming and freezing them. The chain-blade also freezes anything Hitsugaya traps with it. The power it expels is so overwhelming that in Soul Society (where Hitsugaya is not placed under a limiter), its mere release affects the weather within the immediate vicinity, creating a thunderstorm or blizzard.

Tensō Jūrin (天相従臨, Subjugation of the Heavens): One of Hyōrinmaru’s basic powers, as well as its strongest. It allows him to control the weather in the immediate vicinity, or more specifically, the water in the surrounding atmosphere. The ability is usable in both Shikai and Bankai. However, Hitsugaya states that this aspect of his powers is not fully mature, and that he doesn’t like to use it in Bankai mode, as he is unsure of whether or not he could keep it from killing everyone in the vicinity.

Shinkū Tasō Hyōheki (真空多層氷壁, Multilayer Vacuum Ice Wall): To counteract the small quantities of ice his Hyōrinmaru can create, Hitsugaya has developed this method of ice creation in conjunction with Rangiku’s Zanpakutō, Haineko. By using the ashes of Rangiku’s Shikai to create layers of ice, and then by removing the ashes and having Haineko return to its sword form, Hitsugaya can create a multi-layer ice wall with several empty layers. This enables the little ice Hyōrinmaru can create to be able to withstand fire attacks with little damage. Hitsugaya can then manipulate this ice to use as a sword.

Shinkū no Kōri no Yaiba (真空の氷の刃, Vacuum Ice Blade): This ability allows Hitsugaya to control his Shinkū Tasō Hyōheki technique and manipulate the ice by gathering it at the tip of Hyōrinmaru before expelling it forward, creating a large blade of ice which impales his opponent.

Ryōjin Hyōheki (綾陣氷壁, Woven-Ice Wall): Hitsugaya generates a protective wall of ice by finely weaving threads of ice together.

Rokui Hyōketsujin (六衣氷結陣, Six-Clothed Ice Binding-Array; Viz „Six-Point Ice Formation“): Hitsugaya can lay down a trap by placing five snowflake-shaped ice crystals on the ground in a pentagonal formation. When an opponent steps into the trap, each snowflake sends a line of ice towards them. The space within the pentagon is then encased in a large pillar of ice, trapping the opponent.

Bankai: Daiguren Hyōrinmaru (大紅蓮 氷輪丸, Grand Crimson Lotus Ice Ring; Viz „Great Roaring Coldly Shining Moon“): Hitsugaya’s Bankai causes ice to flow from Hyōrinmaru onto Hitsugaya, starting at his right arm, which ice forms onto in the shape of a dragon’s head around his sword hand, encasing the sword up to the hilt, which also changes from the shape of a four-pointed star to that of an eight-pointed star. The ice continues forming up over his shoulders, with two large wings sprouting from his back and a long tail. The ice forms down his left arm and encases his hand, which ends in a claw. Hitsugaya’s feet are encased in ice in a similar manner to his left hand, as they also end in claws. These new ice limbs are movable, and can be used as an extension of himself to aid in battle. During some appearances of his Bankai, three flowers of ice form floating behind him, each consisting of four purple petals shaped like diamonds. These flowers melt away, petal by petal, as Hitsugaya’s battle progresses, leading Shawlong Koufang to speculate that Hitsugaya’s Bankai will deactivate when all twelve petals disappear, assuming that the captain’s Bankai was incomplete due to his young age. During his fight with Luppi, these petals were noticeably absent. However, during his fight in the Fake Karakura Town, they were present once more. Following the final battle against Aizen, Hitsugaya trained and strengthened his Bankai considerably, completing its development after eighteen months of hard work. According to Hitsugaya, should his Bankai somehow end up trying to attack itself, the ice would instead be deflected somewhere else rather than actually attack the Bankai.

Though now during the Quincy blood war arc, Toshiro had mastered his bankai, he would appear more older, hence making him look like he is in a form of an adult.

The abilities it had help him consist of is faster movement, and a four second radial intervention of something called „absolute zero“ when a target comes close to him, they are frozen instantly within a four second radius surrounding him.

Much like his Shikai, Tōshirō can freeze objects and areas, though the radius and strength of the freezing is greater. Because the Bankai’s freezing ability is much greater, Tōshirō can swing his tail around as a weapon to try and freeze objects. Hyōrinmaru’s Bankai lets Tōshirō access several additional techniques.

During his battle with Luppi Antenor, Hitsugaya’s Bankai was damaged. However, it regenerated, and Hitsugaya stated that as long as there is water in the air, his Bankai can be revived indefinitely.

Zanhyō Ningyō (残氷人形, Lingering Ice Puppet/Doll): Upon activating his Bankai, Tōshirō is able to create and shape a large amount of ice into his exact likeness. It is very life-like, as it can appear to bleed. He stated that he can usually only trick an opponent once with it, so he usually saves it for towards the end of a battle.

Shield of Ice Wings: Hitsugaya is capable of wrapping his wings around himself like a sphere, protecting him from attacks.

Ryūsenka (竜霰花, Dragon Hail Flower): When Hitsugaya stabs his opponents, a huge burst of ice erupts from the point of contact between Hyōrinmaru and the opponents, encasing and freezing them. Hitsugaya then proceeds to shatter the ice, and his opponent with it.

Sennen Hyōrō (千年氷牢, Thousand Years‘ Ice Prison): Hitsugaya creates many ice pillars, which encircle him and his enemy. At his command (when he turns his sword 90 degrees counter-clockwise), these pillars then move towards the enemy, enveloping and crushing them. Though this technique is very powerful, Hitsugaya infers that it takes a considerable amount of time to prepare, and therefore the distraction of his enemy is crucial in successfully completing this attack.

Hyōten Hyakkasō (氷天百華葬, Frozen Heaven Hundred Flower Funeral): This ability is an extension of Hyōrinmaru’s Tensō Jūrin power. However, because Hitsugaya dislikes using Tensō Jūrin while his Bankai is active, he rarely uses it. The ability opens up a huge hole in the clouds, through which a large amount of snow floats down onto his opponent. As the snow comes into contact with the opponent, ice flowers sprout all over their body, instantly trapping them in a pillar of ice. Hitsugaya claimed that when the last of the 100 petals falls, the life of the one who touched it will be over.

Guncho Tsurara (群鳥氷柱, Icicle Flock): Hitsugaya freezes water into ice and then swings his Zanpakutō in an arc, firing an array of ice daggers at his target.

Hyōryū Senbi (氷竜旋尾, Ice Dragon Swirling Tail): With this technique, Hitsugaya swings his sword in a linear direction and creates overflowing ice from his blade in the form of a crescent.

Zekku (絶空, Void Sever): This ability allows Hitsugaya to control his Hyōryū Senbi technique and send it up into the air.

Toshiro is an inspiration to me, considering the fact that, I can relate to his past, From when he was a child, And had a close Bond with his Grandmother As I did Before she had passed. (Buuuuuut not getting into my personal stuff xD )

Anyways His technique is beautiful, he’s a child prodigy, and his intellect and maturity matches my own,

I also can relate on how people call him a child, and call him a midget or short xD considering his height, I know that feeling too well.

His Zanpakuto Hiyorinmaru is one beautiful Sword, His manifested form Is even more Bad ass and awesome that it pretty much have me a Jaw drop xD

Early Years

Tōshirō is a child of Rukongai. Hailing from Junrin’an, the 1st district of Rukongai, he lived with an elderly woman whom he referred to as his grandmother. Tōshirō can be considered as a brat and at his most childish whenever he is visited by Momo Hinamori who visited him regularly. Although they constantly made fun of each other, they are close friends and Tōshirō has undertaken it upon himself to protect her no matter what.

Hinamori would enter into the Shinigami Academy, yet still will visit her good friend. Although Tōshirō probably wouldn’t admit it, it was comforting that Hinamori was still visiting, as she, along with „Granny“ were the only people he was really friends with. The other children who lived nearby and friends other friends of Hinamori would be too scared to get near him due to him being „cold as ice“.

Hitsugaya was aware of how others saw him and understood their attitude as he was also aware that there was something about himself that was not „normal“. Hitsugaya would have strange dreams of wandering through fields of ice. The dreams would begin to show more depth and would gradually be introduced to a mysterious dragon of ice. This disturbed Tōshiro as he wondered what it all meant. Unbeknownst to him he was gradually making Granny ill, as he slept he would exude a chilly aura.

After 5 years, Hinamori was still in the academy and Tōshirō noticed she was growing as a person and beginning to visit less due to her new commitments.

Tōshirō would meet a young and brash Rangiku Matsumoto whilst visiting a local shop. Knocked down by Matsumoto’s large bosom, he was noticed for having an unusual spiritual aura or Riestsu. Before she could talk to him properly, Tōshirō shrugged her away and ran off. Intrigued by this unusual Rietsu, Matsumoto was able to easily track as it was uncontrolled and leaking. Explaining to Tōshirō that he was making his Granny ill, Matsumoto suggested he join the Shinigami Academy.

With Hinamori visiting less and seeing how she had grown as a person, Tōshirō finally decided to enter the Shinigami Academy.

Tōshirō’s natural talent quickly saw him rise through the ranks of the Shinigami. Passing in his first year with top honors being directed to him ahead of any other classmates.

Although successful in the academy, it was met with some heartache. The Central 46 had learned that Hitsugaya and Kusaka, another student and good friend to Hitsugaya, had managed to attain the Zanpakutō, Hyōrinmaru. Due to this occurrence being taboo within Soul Society, The Central 46 ordered both to battle each other for the honour of wielding Hyōrinmaru. Hesitant at first until the power of having Hyōrinmaru for himself proved too irresistible. Hitsugaya was too strong for Kusaka and he managed to inflict a severe wound on him. Reluctant to deliver the finishing blow, the Military Corps steps in acting out the wishes of The Central 46 and executes Kusaka.

And so, Hitsuaya would enter the Gotei 13 being regarded as a prodigy and child genius. Having mastering Shikai very early on and being gifted with exceptional skill, it ensured a successful career. Soon Hitsugaya would become the youngest ever captain amongst the other Gotei 13 squads.

Soul Society Arc

It is within this arc we are introduced to Tōshirō for the first time. Captain of the 10th Division, his lieutenant is now Rangiku Matsumoto, he is greatly respected by his squad and his peers. Over the course of this arc Hitsugaya is used as a point of view for the Soul Society side as he investigates Gin’s possible complicity in Aizen’s murder. Through a letter left by Aizen for Momo to read, in which he accuses Tōshirō of being the mastermind of a plot against Soul Society, Momo is led to attack Tōshirō forcing him to hurt his childhood friend. Seeing Gin’s hand in all this he attempts the kill the other captain but Gin is able to end the fight by targetting an unconcious Momo.

Afterwards, not knowing much of Aizen’s letter was true concerning the plot surrounding Rukia’s execution, Tōshirō breaks into the Central 46 where the orders for Rukia’s execution, as well as her often moved up execution date came. He is shortly led away by Izuru Kira but leaves his apprehension to his lieutenant when he senses Hinamori had gone inside the Central 46 after they left.

When he arrived there he came upon Gin Ichimaru, a very much alive Sosuke Aizen and, laying behind them Hinamori’s dying body. Aizen informs him of his betrayal after which Tōshirō attempts to kill him using his Bankai. Aizen is able to easily defeat him nevertheless but both and Hinamori escape defeat thanks to Captain Unohana’s efforts.

Fake Karakura Town Arc

Despite of the fact that he activated his bankai, Halibel activates her resurrection and decides to finish this battle. However, he acknowledges that underestimating him would be fatal and Halibel cuts the right side of his body before Toshiro could even react. Toshiro then looks shock from the immense power and speed of Halibel. After that she is attacked and she dodges and counters to see that it is Hitsugaya and he is unharmed.Halibel looks to where she thought she sliced down Hitsugaya but it was just a ice clone. He states it wont work again and he wanted to save it towards the end of the fight but herr large power boost in her speed and strength caught the Captain off guard. As the battle goes on Halibel starts using water attacks against Hitsugaya but so far they are useless against him, he says all water is his weapon and normal water will never work on him. He attacks her with a ice dragon. She counters by melting his ice. Halibel says that Hitsugaya ice can also be used as a weapon for herself. Which then she attacks Hitsugaya with a water attack that Halibel called „Cascada“.

Hyōrinmaru

Toshiro’s Zanpakutō is Hyōrinmaru („Ice Ring“). While sealed, Hyōrinmaru resembles a normal Zanpakutō with the exception of it’s guard, which is shape of a four-pointed star. The hilt and the sheath are light-blue, which matches Hyōrinmaru’s ice abilities. Hyōrinmaru’s shikai command is „set upon the frozen heavens.“

Hyōrinmaru is the spirit of a great serpentine ice dragon, icy blue in appearance with large wings and bellowing voice. Hitsugaya has had an affinity with Hyōrinmaru even before he began training to become a Shinigami. He would often dream of roaming around on an icy vista where Hyōrinmaru would appear. Hyōrinmaru is known as the strongest of all water and ice element Zanpakutō in Soul Society.

Shikai

Hyō rinmaru is released when Hitsugaya utters the phrase “ Soten ni Zase “ („Sit Upon the Frozen Heavens“). During its Shikai, Hyōrinmaru slightly extends and gains a crescent blade attached to the hilt with a chain. Hyōrinmaru allows Hitsugaya to control water and ice. Tōshiro’s slashes create an immense amount of spirit energy which spills out from the tip of the blade, creating a great flow of ice shaped like Hyō rinmaru itself. The dragon flies attacks opponents and instantly freezes anything it touches. The chain-blade also freezes anything Hitsugaya traps using it.

In addition, Hitsugaya has the limited ability of controlling the weather around his nearby area. This is known as „

Tenso Jurin

“ („Heaven’s Phase Servitude“). This is due to the amount of power his Shikai exudes and his initial control of ice and water. Still a fledgling ability, Hitsugaya is able to use this in Bankai form, however reluctantly as it is possible that it may result in killing all who get too close to it’s vicinity.

Daiguren Hyorinmaru

(Literally translated as „Great Crimson Ice Ring“), and causes ice to flow from Hyorinmaru onto Toshiro, forming two large wings and a tail. A dragon’s head made of ice also forms around his sword hand, encasing it up to the hilt. His left is covered fully until the wrist where it then spans into claws, leaving his hand and fingers free. Three flowers of ice, shaped similarly to his zanpakuto, are also created behind Toshiro with four petals each, which melt away as Toshiro attacks.

Hyorinmaru’s bankai has two known special techniques. The first is „dragon hail flower“, which freezes any opponent Hitsugaya stabs, locking them into an ice cocoon and freezing them to their core. Once frozen, Hitsugaya can shatter his opponent. The second is „thousand years ice prison“, which forms a multitude of ice pillars by using the moisture in the atmosphere. These ice pillars then envelop the opponent.

Completed Daiguren Hyōrinmaru (Adult Bankai)

Hitsugaya is tall and lanky. Ice covers his shoulders, forearms and knees. He has the ability to flash-freeze extremely large objects at a distance with a simple hand gesture and that anything frozen by Hitsugaya will have all of its functions and abilities negated. Anything that touches Hitsugaya will be flash-frozen as well. He can also freeze anything around him after four seconds of building up his power.
