Tom Daley Appreciates Gay Fans

Olympian Tom Daley has stated he appreciates his gay fans following being named “Sexiest Man” by readers of Attitude magazine.

The Olympic swimmer beat the likes of David Beckham and Henry Cavill in the poll run by the gay lifestyle magazine with votes cast by its readers. In a new interview with Digital Spy the Olympian addressed the Attitude poll and stated he was grateful for his gay following.

Daley told Digital Spy “It’s cool, any support I appreciate. Everyone’s been so supportive. [The voters] are the people cheering me on during the Olympics, these are the people that give me extra motivation during training. I really appreciate it.”

In the same interview with Digital Spy, Daley revealed he is up for being a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, Dancing On Ice or I’m A Celebrity. Daley told D.S “I’d have a go on all of them. I’d be terrible on Bushtucker Trials, but I’d give it a go….Strictly and Dancing on Ice – they’re both so sparkly… I’d do either. I’d have to speak to my friends and let them vote which one”

The most recent series of Strictly Come Dancing was won by fellow Olympian Louis Smith who also has a large gay following. Olympians Luke Campbell and Beth Tweddle took part in this year’s Dancing On Ice; the series was won by Tweddle. ITV has confirmed the 9th season of Dancing on Ice, set to air in January 2014, will be the last following declining ratings.

Daley is expected to return for the second series of Splash! which will air next year on ITV. Daley was the diving coach on the first series of the celebrity diving show which featured famous faces such as Tina Malone, Caprice, Joey Essex and Linda Barker. Although it was savaged by the critics it was a surprise ratings hit and soon re-commissioned by ITV. Its likely the major appeal of Splash! was the sight of Tom Daley in his speedos rather than the line-up of celebrities, the judges or the premise of the series.

The 22-year-old diver suffered a shock defeat in the 10m platform diving semi-final, finishing 18th and last

TOM DALEY was subjected to horrific homophobic abuse after his shock Rio 2016 Olympics exit.

The 22-year-old Olympian finished last in his 10m platform diving semi-final on Saturday and vile trolls blamed his devastating defeat on him being gay.

A Twitter account called Christian Voice, which claims to be a UK-based prayer and lobby group seeking „national repentance“, were among the trolls to hit out at Daley on Twitter.

They retweeted an article about the diver’s loss and added the post: „Turning gay doesn’t seem to have done Tom Daley any favours at #Rio2016“

The shocking comment provoked a huge backlash on Twitter from the likes of Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and MP Stewart McDonald as well as many as Christians.

One Twitter user wrote: „a Christian woman for some 30yrs & a senior soldier within the Salvation Army, I find your comment falls far from Grace. Appalled.“

Another posted: „so the fact he broke a world record yesterday and won a bronze in anther diving event doesn’t mean a thing?“

Truly heartbroken. but I will never give up on my dream of being an Olympic champion.

Daley’s platform disappointment came after he took bronze in the synchronised 10m event with dive partner Dan Goodfellow.

On Friday, he qualified for the platform semi ahead of world champion Qiu Bo and fellow Chinese star Chen Aisen, scoring the highest points for a dive at Rio 2016.

But it wasn’t to be in the semi-final as Daley finished 18th and last.

Afterwards, he said: „I want to be Olympic champion – that’s been my dream since I was a kid.

We are all so proud of all you’ve achieved here in #Rio2016 @TomDaley1994. We fight again another day! ONWARD! ❤️❤️❤️

„At the Olympics you can get your dreams crushed in an instant so it’s tough.

„To think that Team GB has already got three diving medals from these Games is incredible and gives you a massive kick of motivation to want to be standing on top of that podium in 2020.“

Daley released a YouTube video in December 2013 revealing he had been in a relationship with a man from earlier that year.

He got engaged to film producer Dustin Lance Black in October 2015.

Here’s a fact: In the entire history of the Olympics, there has never been an openly gay male gymnast. An Olympic gymnast hasn’t even come out after retiring. We’ve had a gay decathlete, runner, hurdler and high jumper, among others. Yet gymnastics, along with diving, has been widely perceived as a „gay“ sport, while the same is not said for track and field. Hence, the emails I have gotten asking whether British diver Tom Daley is gay (Not that I know of). Matthew Mitcham from Australia is the only openly gay diver in London.Stereotypes are alive and well in sports, even at the Olympics. As with all stereotypes, there is a germ of truth. Gay men do like watching gymnastics and diving, for obvious reasons. And in diving at least, we have had competitors who were gay while competing or came out after. Both sports are also perceived as being more tolerant of gay participants. It could be that gay athletes self-select for certain sports, avoiding some seen as being less fans assume certain sports are gay. A 28-year-old Brit was arrested for sending this malicious tweet following British 10-meter synchro divers Tom Daley and Peter Waterfield finishing fourth:“If there is any consolation for finishing fourth at least Daley and Waterfield can go and bum each other #teamHIV.”Part of the reason for the „diving is gay“ stereotype are the swimsuits, the tight Speedo variety that no straight American dude would be caught dead in. Speedos seem to really bother a lot of guys and I always thought that was one reason the U.S. swim officials pushed so hard for suits that got away from that look. Now, almost no elite swimmers wear them. They are essential, though, in diving, since you want as tight and small a fit as possible when entering a pool from three to 10 meters up. There is even as Internet meme „Olympics or gay porn?“ that focuses almost exclusively on men’s diving, with Tom Daley front and stereotypes are by their nature oversimplified, hence the idea that divers and gymnasts are gay, while weightlifters and water polo players are not. Of course, in our society, the most macho and most popular of all our sports is football. Nothing gay about football. Yet, the late folklorist Alan Dundes wrote a famous paper in the 1970s that argued that football „providing as it does a socially sanctioned framework for male body contact … is a form of homosexual behavior.“ particular sports stereotypes are harmless and mostly fun. The stigma of calling something gay has lost some of its sting and even we can get in on the act as this SB Nation, Cyd and I did attest to. Just be aware that gay athletes are in every sport, so never assume.

Its great that a gay teenager and sports person has been able to do this, and get such positive feedback. Times have changed indeed, particularly as Tom still relies on sponsors. My own comments are at my own blog: that well known British young actors like Ben Whishaw and Russell Tovey can be open and honest about their sexuality as well.

Whoever the „guy“ is, he’s a very, very lucky guy indeed… Jx

He’s a beautiful man–in every way. May God bless him now and always.
