12 Best Gay Dating Apps & Sites For Relationships

Dating is not exclusive to homosexual community, but most of the online dating sites are focussed more on the basic heterosexual relationships which makes it difficult for the queer community. That being said, this problem has not been left without a solution and now there are a lot of apps and sites for queer people to have their fair share of guys and girls as they wish and a lot of platforms dedicated exclusively to them.

When it comes to online gay dating sites and apps, Grindr and Scruff dominate the market with their huge popularity and user base but they are not the only options that you have out there. Here is a rundown of some genuine and working gay dating apps for queer men.

Scruff gay dating app bans underwear photos

Scruff said it had changed its profile picture rules after „repeated suspensions by app store distributors“ but declined to specify which stores.

The app was most recently suspended from Google Play in January, when it disappeared for three days.

Google told BBC News it did not comment on individual apps.

Several Scruff members responded to the policy change on social media, threatening to delete their accounts.

„Craigslist, Backpage, Tumblr, now even Scruff, a gay dating app you have to be of consenting age to use, is censoring how its users can post photos? This isn’t looking so good guys,“ said vlogger Amp Somers, who runs the sex education YouTube channel Watts The Safeword, which has 170,000 subscribers.

The best dating apps for gay users, since meeting people IRL is hellish

Most people have at least one horror story about online dating. It’s a rite of passage that single people love to hate.

But the horror stories look a little different for members of the LGBTQ community. On top of the classic awkward Hinge date anecdotes and screenshots of a corny bio seeping with secondhand embarrassment, gay singles deal with all sorts of alienating interactions. Baseless questioning of sexual history, harassment, and fetishization — most of it coming from cis straight people who shouldn’t have popped up in your feed in the first place — don’t exactly give one butterflies.

Still, dating apps have become crucial means of introduction for gay folks looking to settle down. A 2019 Stanford study and 2020 Pew Research survey found that meeting online has become the most popular way for U.S. couples to connect — especially for gay couples, of which 28% met their current partner online (versus 11% of straight couples).

But the Pew survey also dredged up those ugly experiences with harassment. This could be where options that bar heterosexual users, like HER and Grindr, come in. Their perfectly-tailored environments are so well-known in the gay community that they’re essentially in a league of their own.

That’s not to say that they’re in the queer dating app market alone. Apps like Zoe, Taimi, and Scruff exist. But their plateauing popularity can be attributed to similar complaints: too many scam profiles and too few legitimate users (ones within a reasonable distance to plan a date, anyway). Chappy was a promising app for gay men that shut down just as it was gaining serious traction.

And at the end of the day, „everyone“ apps are simply where masses of queer users are. Keeping Tinder on the back burner isn’t just a straight people thing, especially for those who live in less-populated areas where Grindr and HER have slim pickings. Plus, some mainstream apps do deserve credit for the steps they’ve taken to create a more inclusive atmosphere. Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge now offer lots of sexual orientation and gender identity options. OkCupid gets kudos for making that change years ago, as well as making social justice a core part of compatibility scoring — which kind of self-curates the type of people on the app.

If you’re LGBTQ and hate leaving your home, you’re not alone. Here are the best dating apps and sites that’ll maximize your opportunities while minimizing your human contact. Bless. (For the best dating apps specifically for lesbians, go here.)

Gay dating apps: A comprehensive guide to Jack’d, Grindr, Hornet, Scruff and the rest

There was a time when gay dating was an IRL affair, based around your local gay bar or well known cruising spot. Now, finding a guy usually means grabbing a phone and browsing your options.

While a lot of people decry the decline of gay bar culture, there’s no denying that dating apps are the most popular method of meeting people in 2018. With that in mind, here’s a run down of the most popular gay dating apps for queer men.

An Honest Review of Gay Dating Apps

I’ve been gay and off-and-on single for too many years to count, so of course I’ve used every possible gay app under the sun. To help you avoid some of the many dating mistakes I’ve made, here’s an honest list of all the various gay dating & hookup apps that I’ve used – my personal experience and reviews of the best (and worst) gay apps.

Everyone has an opinion on the gay apps. They’ve become so ubiquitous and ingrained in our popular culture, they’re impossible to resist. I remember the first time I downloaded Grindr—shortly after it was released. Once The New York Times writers discovered it, the app world seemed to explode with location-based dating apps.

Gay dating wasn’t easy for a long time. I was lucky enough to grow up & come out during the iPhone generation when thousands of new types of apps seemed to be released every day. And the gays were instrumental to that digital boom.

The gay apps have fundamentally changed dating—for E V E R Y O N E, the gays, the straights. It changed LGBTQ nightlife, how we make friends & meet others. Of course there are positives and negatives. AA lot has been said about how gayborhoods around the world have changes; the fact that gay bars and clubs are closing with more frequency because of the changing community. Is it the fault of dating apps and the fact most of us meet online—rather than in a gay club?

Certainly that’s had an effect on the LGBTQ community, but so many of these gay apps have also helped to open up the world at large. It’s hard to fault them entirely for the demise of our community spaces, because I do passionately believe social media has helped to connect us in more meaningful and powerful ways.

And just as its probably kept us at home more often, it’s also allowed us to travel more freely and openly.

Personally, I’ve found gay apps to be extremely useful in making new connections in otherwise challenging situations. I’ve grown up on social media and that’s probably affected how I see (and use) online dating. I don’t think I’ve ever been afraid to meet strangers from the internet—it’s thrilling, exciting, interesting, and even when it’s not: it’s a good story.

So, here’s my honest and complete review of all the gay apps I’ve used. In no particular order:

Scruff

Gay dating app Scruff buys competitor Jack’d for undisclosed amount

Scruff, one of the most popular gay hookup apps, announced today that it will buy competing app, Jack’d, for an undisclosed amount. Combined, the two apps will have approximately 20 million users.

Scruff’s parent company, Perry Street Software, is promising major updates to Jack’d and says both apps will continue to operate separately. Approximately 50 percent of Jack’d users are in Asia, giving the company a foothold in that market.

The company is also promising some major updates for Jack’d, which has been plagued with security flaws, poor design, and a lack of features.

“For years, we have admired the diverse and global community on Jack’d. Since its launch in 2010, Jack’d has grown to more than 5 million members worldwide,” said Eric Silverberg, CEO of Perry Street Software. “This acquisition will provide Jack’d members with the same combination of technology and active moderation we have developed at SCRUFF, so that the Jack’d community members will be protected against harassment, spam bots, scammers, and risks while traveling.”

Jack’d has faced mounting bad publicity after a security flaw was let people download private and public pictures from Jack’d without downloading the app. Researcher Oliver Hough says he told the company about it several months ago, but never got a response.

The bug has still not been fixed, according to British tech website , which confirmed that private pictures could still be downloaded without permission. While the pictures are not associated with any specific account, someone could use details associated with the pictures – like user location – to figure out who they belong to.

“We recognize that the growth Jack’d experienced in building its app created some technical and logistical growing pains, and we are eager through this acquisition to provide Jack’d members with a much improved software experience,” Silverberg said. “Perry Street will invest significant resources to upgrade the technology and reliability of the Jack’d app.”

The company says Jack’d members can expect to see the removal of all programmatic advertising, enhanced controls over privacy and security, and new features such as improved messaging, and the ability to include video as part of member private albums or in chat.

The acquisition makes Perry Street Software the largest fully LGBTQ owned-and-operated software company. Their main competitor in the market, Grindr, is owned by a Chinese company currently, but the purchase was blocked by the US government as a security concern. Grindr’s owner is being forced to sell the app to a different owner.

“We are a part of the community that we serve, and thus it is critical to us that we are always able to stand behind our decisions and business practices. It’s why we removed programmatic advertising from SCRUFF in 2018, why we don’t sell member data to shady data brokers, and why we support GDPR and current privacy-focused legislative efforts being considered now in Congress” Silverberg said.

Top 7 LGBT Dating Apps to Find Your Ideal Match

LGBT Dating apps are no longer an uncommon thing to see in your friend or colleague’s smartphone. People have become aware of and support the LGBT community more than ever. This article is about these kinds of apps.

Everyone has the right to love and to be loved. You would find multiple relationship apps for couples and apps for dating for straight people in the mobile app stores. However, as a gay, lesbian or queer person, it takes little extra effort to find like-minded people surrounding you. You know that, in your town or a city, there are thousands of LGBTQI+ people around you. The problem is to spot them.

You may use Facebook groups or join LGBT forums for finding the right one for the date, hookup, or a long term relationship. But it takes up your lot of time! There are also platforms like Meet up where the community of lesbian and gay people can arrange meetings and get acquainted with each other.

But the problem with these platforms is that sometimes they become more hassle than help. On Facebook, usually, you might find fake profiles having no images, no description, and no friends. So how to find the right platform for discovering the perfect people you can trust and take things ahead in your love life.

Fortunately, app developers have created multiple dating apps for LGBTQ people that go beyond traditional dating apps like tinder and help LGBTQ+ communities connect with each other for dating, socializing and probably mating. Around 80% of the LGBT people in a survey said that LGBT dating apps have helped them to find the ideal relationship.

So, are you looking for a serious relationship, or just searching for a blind date, hookup, even friends with benefits, and no string attached fun with other adult lesbians or gays?

We have curated a list of trending LGBT dating apps of 2021. Let’s cut to the chase and find the ideal match for you.

Scruff App Review

With a staggering membership base of about 8 million users and over 60 million messages shared between users every week, Scruff is one of the leading dating platforms for bisexual, gay, trans and curious men from across the globe. This dating service attracts people from all walks of life – muscular, military, and rugged, daddies, and college guys, among others. Scruff thrives on innovative features and affordable subscription costs, making it a favorite among those looking for a companion.

Scruff’s Latest Update: Fighting Gay App Racism

Scruff’s CEO, Eric Silverberg, discusses two major changes to the gay dating app involving ethnicity and advertising.

Scruff recently implemented two significant updates.

As of August 17, the gay dating app, which has over 12 million members in 180 countries, has removed all programmatic advertising; it also no longer requires users to list their race or ethnicity.

The first change means that Scruff will not display third-party ads from companies like Google’s AdMob and Twitter’s MoPub. These ads are automated by targeting specific demographics like the gay community, using data provided by the app.

Instead, Scruff’s advertising will focus on partnerships with LGBTQ nonprofits, health, and advocacy groups, as well as lifestyle and travel companies.

In an interview with The Advocate over email, Eric Silverberg, CEO and cofounder of Scruff, said its change in advertising came about in part to increase the security of user data.

„Scruff members can be assured that their data will be used only to help them meet and connect with other guys, not to target shady advertising for products or apps nobody would want or use anyway,“ Silverberg said. „Though this decision will cost Scruff revenue in the short-term, we believe it is the right long-term decision because it creates the best experience for our community.“

The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation, which gives users more control over their personal data and how it is exported, was another reason for the advertising update. The regulation, which went into effect May 2018, made it „impossible“ for Scruff to continue programmatic advertising in Europe, Silverberg said.

„Because Scruff is global, we wanted to ensure that we could apply a consistent set of policies worldwide,“ Silverberg said. „Our members entrust us with deeply personal and sensitive information, and it didn’t feel ethical for us to hold U.S. users to a different, arguably lower standard of privacy than E.U. users.“

Security over user data on gay apps had made headlines several times this year. Grindr, a Scruff competitor, came under fire in April after a report revealed it was sharing sensitive user data like HIV status with third-party vendors. It has since ceased this practice.

Additionally, in March, a man named Trever Faden exposed flaws in Grindr’s security, after he created a third-party site called C*ckblocked. The website ostensibly allowed Grindr users to see who blocked them by entering their Grindr log-in and password to C*ckblocked. In doing so, Faden could access those users‘ unread messages, email addresses, deleted photos, and location data.

Giving away users‘ locations is dangerous, but especially in homophobic nations where some gay and bi men are entrapped through gay dating apps. Grindr has since taken steps to correct these flaws and cautioned users not to share account information or password with third parties.

To heighten security, Silverberg also said Scruff will no longer consider an integration with Facebook — by allowing a login through a Facebook account, for example — due to the controversy surrounding reports of how Cambridge Analytica mined information from the social media service to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

In terms of the second change, Scruff will now only require users to share their name, email, and birthday — ethnicity and all other profile fields are optional. Why? Silverberg said that „what people are comfortable sharing changes, both as you use the app more and as social and cultural expectations evolve.“

„We recognize that the queer community of color faces discrimination and racism as part of their regular lives,“ he said. „It is why Scruff is the only platform that vigorously enforces its community guidelines to ensure that harassment, racism and abuse doesn’t happen, and if it does it is dealt with swiftly.“

Silverberg said Scruff is also planning other initiatives to create a „safe, affirming, and fun digital space“ for queer people of color, although he did not reveal specifics.

This change comes about as gay dating apps are facing increased scrutiny for their role in combating racism, transphobia, and body-shaming from users on their platforms. Grindr, which has received criticism for this issue, is planning to launch an initiative, Kindr, later this month to encourage users to „play nice.“

„Our upcoming ‚Kindr‘ initiative, which is built around education, awareness and specific policy changes in the Grindr app, will serve as the first step of many Grindr will be taking to help foster a more inclusive and respectful community on our platform,“ Landen Zumwalt, Grindr’s head of communications, told . Grindr also does not require users to list their ethnicity.

When asked about Kindr, Silverberg said, „Scruff has always had zero tolerance for abuse on its app, and diligently removes these kinds of accounts to create a safe platform for its users.“

Scruff: What To Expect?

In recent years, single members of the LGBTQI+ community have received many solutions in the form of gay Chatroulette and different sites. However, they are not always convenient and effective, especially if you spend a lot of time away from your home PC. In this Scruff review, we’re going to take a look at the popular gay dating app. In 2010, Eric Silverberg and Johnny Skandros decided to create a Scruff dating app for single men. 4 years later, their development became the most popular rainbow product in New York. All this time, Scruff has been expanding its customer base, and today you will find 12+ million members here.

After a simple registration, new users receive free accounts. With their help, they can flip through profiles, rate photos, and start an instant gay chat. However, Scruff offers a wide variety of filters. It means you get the best results when it comes to the search. To get to know your partner better, you don’t need to bombard him with questions. It is enough to open his profile and get answers to all questions. So, you can find out about his location, job, hobbies, sexual desires. By upgrading your account, you will receive many additional options!

There are many Scruff reviews on the internet, but not all of them will help you. We are here to provide up-to-date information about this new app. Finally, we will answer: “Is Scruff worth it?”

Sign Up/Log In Scruff Process

Registration and Scruff log in are the simplest functions that you have ever seen on similar online platforms. But we didn’t like that users can view accounts without registering. Either way, you need to download the Scruff dating app and then click the Register button. The location you entered will get latitude/longitude immediately via Google Maps. Next, enter your email, date of birth, and choose a strong password. Unlike other gay dating apps, Scruff does not oblige users to upload their photos. However, this is necessary if you are counting on a successful search. Choose a suitable photo and choose one of these options:

Upon completion of the procedure, press the Scruff log in button and complete your account. Tell a little how you spend your free time or what sex positions you prefer.

Who Are Members And What Are The Main Ways To Connect?

Scruff is the gay-only app so you will never meet women here. After registration, you will be included in one of the communities (Otter, Daddy, Muscle, Military, Bear, Bisexual, or other). As you already understood, all Scruff users differ in physique, age, principles, and preferences. Use all available filters to find the best match. Once your heart starts beating faster, choose a communication method.

The good news is you can write to anyone, whenever you want. If you are tired of the same type of messages, click the ‘Paw’ button and submit a ‘Woof’. This will attract the man’s attention and he will likely start a chat. This is the fastest way of communication. Apart from text messages, Scruff users can also send pictures (GIF) and naughty videos. This is enough to find a friend, sex partner, or even love. Surely, there are also some extra features in the app.

What About Users’ Security And Personal Info Safety?

All Internet users, especially members of the LGBTQI+ community, care about their safety. As already mentioned, the service allows unregistered users to visit your account. This could jeopardize your anonymity. However, Scruff users get all the necessary security measures. After Scruff login, your data is transferred to a separate server protected by 128-bit SSL encryption and other tools. The Scruff app publishes only verified profiles of users over 18.

Scruff warns that your safety depends on your actions. You are not advised to talk about your username/password. Moreover, it makes sense to use an additional password for the home screen. If someone from Scruff users asks for your data, please inform the customer support available via email. There is also a dedicated section with rules and guides. Check them if this is your first online dating experience.

Similar To Scruff

Scruff entered the market at the same time as other popular similar gay dating apps and sites. Therefore, you may find similar features with Grindr and GaysTryst that serve the same purpose. In addition to the same elements in the interface, you will find similarities in the search engine and active accounts. Scruff and other dating sites/apps offer many additional options. You can see gays nearby and much more.

Scruff gay dating app review

Scruff is one of the most popular gay chat and dating app on the market. Research shows that there are more gay men than lesbian women who are looking for love online. Small wonder there are more gay members on any dating sites and mobile apps!

“I have been using Scruff since 2010. During the previous eight years, I’ve met all my partners via this app. This gay dating app has improved a lot over the years because now its interface looks very trendy and chic. I highly recommend this gay app to all my gay and bisexual friends who want to find something cool and someone hot.” (Christopher, Miami)

“Initially, I joined Grindr in 2009, but since 2011, I’ve discovered Scruff which has better technology that meets my needs. This is the smartest gay dating app on the planet because its AI learns what I am looking for! That’s why finding dates is extremely easy and efficient on Scruff.” (Jack, L. A.)

“All my private coaching clients who are gay and bisexual have tried Scruff because it’s their favourite gay dating app on the market – its artificial intelligence is so smart. The more you use Scruff, the smarter this app gets. So it only recommends guys that you actually like to you each day.” (Jade Seashell)

“Amongst our gay clientele, most of them prefer Scruff these days due to its advanced and cutting-edge technology. Hence, we recommend Scruff to anyone who wants to try gay dating online.” (Curt Coch)

Scruff Pro is its membership subscription. It is available for purchase at US$14.99 each month (or less, depending on renewal frequency and region). This subscription is valid for 30 days, 90 days, 180 days, or one year, depending on the membership type chosen. SCRUFF Pro: $14.99 SCRUFF Pro: $12.99 SCRUFF Pro: $8.99 Messaging Pro: $4.99 Browsing Pro: $3.99

Scruff is a decent gay dating and social app which offers good value for its members. It supports many different languages and can be downloaded in every country in the world. A member’s subscription automatically renews unless the member turns it off manually. Therefore, a wise gay dater always has a budget and watches his money.

This is my main dating site, I have already refused others. At SCRUFF there is a paid subscription, and this is the best protection against inadequate. Men who write to me are interested in finding a life partner, dating lovers for one night sit on other sites that are more accessible. Therefore, communication does not bring negativity, but only pleasure. It’s so easy to find an interesting partner online and go to date, and if it doesn’t work out, then the parting took place without aggression, like in decent people. I’ve made correspondence with several men; they are all interesting personalities with whom it is pleasant to communicate. I recommend this decent dating site with great users.

I don’t like the fact that the app is positioning itself as free, but all the normal features are available only to premium accounts. You have to pay $14.99 per month. The money is small, and the fee scares different scammers, bots and other unpleasant personalities, but it would be better to warn about the need for a paid subscription in advance. Despite the paid services, I like this app. There are a lot of questionnaires online, men write constantly, it’s possible to communicate with many of them simultaneously, arrange meetings, etc. I haven’t yet found a soul mate, but I spend a good time online.

I completely agree with you. Only registration is free, for all other useful options, you have to pay. Moreover, I don’t like that you have to pay every month. And the fee doesn’t change whether you sit on the site around the clock or enter once a week. On the one hand, this is good, some kind of insurance against spammers rolls and maniacs. On the other hand, demanding money for any step resembles extortion. But this whole farce is compensated by the fact that it’s possible to meet a few really interesting people, with whom you can build serious relationships.

I have been using SCRUFF gay dating app about 2 months and I have met different people online and I have noticed some disadvantages. Firstly, they claim that this app is free, but in fact you need to buy subscription in order to use the app properly. There is no particular dissatisfaction with this, I expected this. Secondly, you can meet anyone here. I’ve chatted with bots, fakes, those who simply offered to pay me for sex and so on. But there are normal men too, but you need to communicate at least 2 weeks, and then you can go on a date in a crowded place.

‚Explicit content‘

Scruff is a social network and dating app for gay, bisexual and trans men. Members can browse a grid of profiles and speak to people in their area, or explore other locations.

However, it has disappeared from Google Play several times in recent months.

In a blog post that referred to the app’s temporary disappearance from Google Play in January, the company said: „Had this removal been permanent, it would have been devastating to our company and our community.“

It had now enacted „wide-ranging changes to its profile photo content guidelines“ in order to „ensure continued and full compliance“, the blog post added.

The company also told BBC News it took content moderation seriously.

Google declined to tell BBC News why Scruff had been removed from the app store several times.

Part of the challenge facing Scruff and similar apps „is the fact that different app stores publish guidelines with varying degrees of specificity“, chief executive Eric Silverberg told BBC News.

Google does publish a policy for app developers regarding sexually explicit content but it is very short and subject to interpretation.

While images of sex toys, sex acts and sex with animals are expressly forbidden, the policy otherwise bans only „sexually suggestive poses“.

Prior to the change, Scruff’s policies already forbade:

Last week, when the updated policy was introduced, it also banned photos of „hugging and kissing“ but his has now been changed to „sexually suggestive embraces“ following criticism from its members.

Scruff said existing profile photos would be rechecked to ensure compliance with the new policy.

Rival policies

Rival dating app Grindr does not allow underwear photos but does allow swimwear „in context“, such as photos taken on the beach.

Tinder’s profile guidelines do not give specific examples but do state „no nudity, no sexually explicit content“.

Both Grindr and the LGBT social network Hornet told BBC News they had not been suspended from Google Play.

The fetish app Recon is not available on Google Play, although a tamer version of Recon, which filters more explicit profile images, is available on Apple’s App Store.

While Google declined to comment, it made clear that its moderators did not discriminate based on sexuality or gender identity.

What you need to know

Is Scruff settling down? This notorious hookup app is now shifting so that it aims to help users to find lasting relationships style. Don’t worry, though: Scruff remains a great app to find hookups for a single night (or afternoon). Alongside the household name Grindr, Scruff is one of the two most famous and well-known apps on the gay dating scene. Scruff and Grindr have been head to head rivals for many years now, and so Scruff continues to develop its USP: a detailed search function that makes it easy to home in on just the right type of guy. This Scruff Gay Dating App Review aims to give a flavour of what using this app is like since its major 2015 update.

The stats

Scruff was launched back in 2010 by Johnny Skandros and Eric Silverberg. Stats from October 2016 suggest that it has now passed the 10 million user mark. The app is free to all, but those who wish to can also upgrade to a paid version with additional features. Traditionally, this app has been focused on hookups (and it was mainly directed at those in their 30s and 40s), but in 2015 the app was revamped to place more of a focus on finding guys to date in the longer term. Are the 20 somethings who started using Scruff in 2010 now reaching a time of life where they want to settle down? Who knows!

The fact remains that in 2017 Scruff is now an app that can be used to find both a random guy to sleep with and your next long term partner. This is a truly global app, having been translated into 14 languages (including Italian, Spanish, German and French). It is also available in no less than 180 countries worldwide and the past six months or so has started to take off in India (to a significant part, this is probably due to Scruff taking a visible part in several events in the country such as LGBT Flash Mobs in New Delhi). This international outlook is aided by the app’s travel features, one of which enables users to see the travel plans of other guys using the app so that they can arrange hookups abroad.

A further travel feature is devoted to suggesting good places to eat and drink in different cities around the world. This Scruff Gay Dating App Review should also mention the technical fact that this app is available for iOS, Android and Windows, so take your pick!

What it packs

I already described some of the travel focused features earlier in my Scruff Gay Dating App Review, but there are plenty more features to discover. No Scruff Gay Dating App Review would be complete without mentioning the app’s extensive and detailed search feature. If you are looking for a particular type of guy (e.g. twink/ bear/ no body hair/ interested in barebacking) you can find him with ease just by narrowing down your search. As of 2014, Scruff has been putting a concerted effort into informing users about each other’s practices regarding safer sex, and so on signing up to this app, you will be encouraged to give as much information as you are comfortable with.

As you might expect, though, when you first log on to Scruff you will find that it looks initially deceptively like its main rival, Grindr.

You are presented with a grid of guys’ photos (most of them, inevitably, are pics of faceless torsos), and guys who are closer to your current location will appear first on the screen. There is a Tinder-style photo swipe function on the app now, as well as photo sharing and instant messaging capabilities for you to get to know guys better.

Too shy to chat? Scruff also offers you the possibility to send a guy a ‘woof’ to show that you like him without entering into a lengthy discussion. It would be hard to capture all of the features of this app in a single Scruff Gay Dating App Review (as explained at the start of this Scruff Gay Dating App Review, one of the USPs of Scruff, as opposed to Grindr, is the level of detail that the developers have gone into), but hopefully this has given you a good overview of what it’s like.

The last word

If I had to sum up my Scruff Gay Dating App Review, I’d say that Scruff remains a great app. It’s always been an excellent option when you’re seeking a hookup, and the very specific search function means you can filter out all of the guys that you know you would never be compatible with. Don’t be put off by the slightly gauche word ‘community’ when you’re asked to choose which ‘community’ your ideal guy belongs to: ‘community’ just means which of the classic gay categories you’d put your man into (i.e. twink, bear and so on). I have both Scruff and Grindr on my phone and use both intermittently, and Scruff has always been a reliable way to find someone near me to hook up with as it’s so popular that there are always guys logged on and available.

Scruff Gay Dating App Review Rating

My Scruff Gay Dating App Review can be summed up in the following star rating: 5 stars.

This app has been around so long, and gained such popularity, quite simply because it does just what guys want. Whether you are just looking for a guy who is close to you for an easy hookup in a bar, or whether you have more specific requirements, you can always turn to Scruff. Would I also give Grindr 5 stars? Absolutely. These two apps are very much on a par with each new travel-focused features make Scruff great to use abroad, too, and I would say it’s enhanced my holidays ever since I started using it.

Pure is the best gay dating app

Tinder, Grindr, and Recon still dominate the American gay dating apps market, but if you like to explore and always willing to have more, it’s definitely worth trying something new. Hornet is the closest analog to Grindr. EliteSingles may be useful for building LTR. Chappy and OkCupid are still in search of their concept. Jack’D is the most inclusive of all.

And Pure is just the most ideologically and technologically advanced among all best gay dating sites. Both the design and the functionality prevent anything and anyone to distract you from PURE fun!

Grindr

Grindr, you may have heard of it? Launched in 2009 as the first ‘geosocial’ dating app (i.e. you can see who’s nearby), Grindr has grown to dominate both the actual market and the entire concept of gay hookup culture.

The general consensus is that Grindr is only for hookups, but this isn’t necessarily true. As is the case anywhere a lot of people gather, there’s something on Grindr for everyone – from one night stands and fuckbuddies to long term relationships.

That being said, if you’re looking for a brief encounter, Grindr will do the job, as it’s more of a free-for-all than some other apps with little restriction on who you can talk to. All you need to do to get started is sign up, set your preferences and scroll through guys close by. If you’re using the free version, be willing to suppress your rage at the incessant ads.

As is also the case with large gatherings of people, there’s a lot of bigotry and generally unacceptable behaviour on Grindr. A lot of this stems from the fact that users have license to be incredibly specific about their wants and desires, which apparently for some people means being specifically terrible.

Awful behaviour aside, there are a lot of pros to Grindr. Mainly, it has the most users. You can also be as anonymous as you want or as open as you’d like with your gender, preferred pronouns and status. People are also pretty trigger happy with pics, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Since a change at the top in 2016, Grindr has been on a one-app mission to be the centre of gay universe, with big events, an online magazine and a gay emoji keyboard. Basically, it isn’t going away anytime soon.

Scruff

Scruff, as the name suggests, is the hairier, bearier alternative to Grindr. The age range of users skews a little older than its main rival, and they are more uniformly of the muscular persuasion.

Scruff has been on the scene almost as long as Grindr, so it’s also amassed a large user base. As with Grindr, the amount of users has diluted its USP, so it’s not exclusively ‘scruffy’ guys on there, just mainly, and still overwhelmingly masc.

If masculinity isn’t high on your list of priorities, I wouldn’t necessarily look here. Scruff is hookup oriented, but does have a ‘match’ function if you’re looking for dates.

Being slightly more niche appeal than Grindr, Scruff doesn’t have the same critical mass of users, nor the cultural clout. However, if you see the word Scruff and don’t immediately shout ‘Oh Scruff Pit Crew’ in your best Mama Ru voice, then why are we even doing this?

Having sponsored the Pit Crew in the sixth season of Rupaul’s Drag Race, Scruff secured its position in the psyches of gay men everywhere, and it’s worth checking it out for this alone.

Jack’d

As mentioned, when you get a lot of guys together, bigotry tends to rear its ugly head and send you unsolicited nudes. Jack’d presents itself as an alternative to the divisiveness of other gay dating apps, and there’s proportionally more POC on there.

It works in much the same way as Scruff or Grindr, but with some additional features like more photos and the ability to see who’s been looking at your profile. You should be able to find both hookups or relationships on Jack’d, but it is a little more NSA friendly.

Hornet

Hornet’s USP seems to be ‘we do Grindr better than Grindr’. While Grindr’s functionality is notoriously clunky, Hornet works much better, with less intrusive ads, interesting side features like in-app articles and more photos. In practice though, you use Hornet much the same way as Grindr.

Hornet is pitched more towards being a community platform than just a gay dating app, and you’ve got the option to follow people for updates or see events and stories.

Community aspects aside, you’re more likely to find a one night stand on here than a husband. Hornet has been slowly beating out other apps worldwide through its news and content delivery, especially in Brazil, but has yet to dislodge Grindr and its other rivals from the top spot in the UK or US.

Chappy

You’re probably most familiar with Chappy from it filling every available ad space on your social media.

Chappy’s ‘USP’ is that you can slide a scale at the top of the app to select ‘Mr Right’, ‘Mr Right Now’ (clever) or ‘Mr Who Knows’ to find guys who are looking for the same. You can then swipe, Tinder style, through the filtered buffet. You have to log in through Facebook, so there’s much less room for anonymity.

Chappy is the brainchild of Made In Chelsea’s Ollie Locke, who was looking for something different from the other gay dating apps on the market. In reality, Chappy feels more like a ‘rich person decides to be entrepreneur’ kind of project, especially as most apps give you the ability to state exactly what you’re looking for, albeit in the much less fun form of ‘words’ rather than a sliding scale.

Regardless, Chappy has the backing of Bumble founder Whitney Wolf, it works pretty well and there are plenty of guys on there to swipe through. Unsurprisingly, you’ll find most of them on the ‘Mr Who Knows’ point of the scale.

Tinder

And finally, Tinder. Whereas Tinder was once thought of as Grindr for straight people, the ability to set your preferences to find other gays has made Tinder an increasingly popular choice.

Gay Tinder is to straight Tinder what Gay Twitter is to regular Twitter, i.e. the same, but gayer! You log in, set your preferences, and then swipe your way through the oncoming onslaught of men.

Tinder’s default setting is straight (eye roll), so you have to change it to find your fellow gays. With the free version, you have a limited number of swipes per day and limited access to extra features like ‘Super Likes’ and ‘Boost’.

By its nature, Tinder is geared more towards dating than hookups, although that’s not to say you can’t find both. There’s lots of guys on the platform, so you’ve got good odds of finding someone.

Conclusion: Top Dating apps for LGBT People

As per the Statista’s report, the online dating market is going to touch US $ 2530 m in 2024. Which is great news for the LGBT community because they would be able to find similar people on the go.

Also, there is vast opportunity for the business persons who want to invest in app development, as more people are inclined towards these online dating apps for finding the one.

Do you have any ideas for creating dating apps for LGBTQ people? As a renowned dating app developer, we could help you build a seamless dating app for your startup.

Pricing

A dating service that is as good as could never be free. Given the fact that the Scruff app incorporates all the key features of a professional dating service, the makers have levied premium charges for access to advanced features. Here is what you’d have to pay to become a premium member of this site.

As you’d have noticed, the effective subscription cost reduces as you opt for a package with higher validity. In our opinion opting for the 6 month subscription package would be a wise choice as it would give you ample time to understand the pros and cons of the website while being able to connect with like – minded people.

Verdict

The Scruff app can be touted to be a segment leader in the online gay dating domain, bringing users from across the globe and belonging to all walks of life. Rather than throwing in random features on the website, the makers of the site believe in quality that can help you connect with like – minded people from all over the world. Unlike other sites that charge exorbitant amounts for a mediocre set of features, this site actually manages to put in a great show at a very reasonable price range.

Young gay hot men! Try Scruff!

Without a doubt Scruff delivers a daily feast of gay men. You can spend hours reading the profiles and viewing face photos of aspiring young gay men on your Smartphone in the privacy of your home or office. You are allowed to “woof” any man that you might fancy. This is purely your individual choice. You can even contact any of these individuals if their profile offers any interest to you. It is up to the individual you try to contact to message you back. It may be problematic as to whether you receive a message back because that is based on mutual interest of looks, hobbies, business interests and numerous other factors. These factors can be included under the very general term of “chemistry”. The basic plan is free. You are limited on the number of guys you can view. It is still very generous on the number of men you can view. For a nominal monthly fee you can upgrade to the “Pro” plan. With this plan you can view many more gay men along with their profiles as well as message any guy you might want. It is very addictive to browse the guys. It is very entertaining as well. I would highly recommend this app! If you are a gay man I guarantee you will enjoy yourself!

1. Grindr

Grindr is a very popular gay dating app with a user base of a whopping 10 million and is the first geosocial gay app, which means that you can find who is nearby who is also using the app and all of these factors have contributed majorly to the success of the app. Though there is a general agreement to the fact that Grindr is one of the best hookup apps. So you can see that if you are looking for a brief encounter, then you might have more success than if you are looking to have a serious relationship as it is more free for all sort of app with little restrictions.

The process is very straightforward with Grindr as all you have to do to get started is to sign-up and set your preferences and you can start scrolling through the guys nearby and that is it but you will be disturbed incessantly by the ads if you are using the free version. Also, since the community and userbase are just huge, you can also expect a lot of unacceptable behaviour on the app mostly because the users have the ability to be very precise about their desires and what they want. But so many users are also a pro because you can be as anonymous as you choose and you will find someone that suits your interests with so many options.

2. Scruff

Scruff is gay dating app for people who are fond of beards and moustache and is generally into the hairy aspects of things. Scruff promotes a more manly and muscular image and the age of the users are a bit on the older side of things as compared to its main rival, the Grindr. All of that being said, Scruff was also launched around the time Grindr was and also has a massive user base of over 12 million people and is extremely popular among the users, most of whom are very masculine and if that isn’t your cup of tea, then maybe you won’t have much luck with the app.

Scruff is also mainly considered a gay hookup app but it does have a match feature that will help you find a suitable match for your dating needs. You can be very specific about your needs, wants and desires and Scruff will cater to them with their powerful search and filter features and they also do not have any spambots which is also a huge plus. Scruff also allows guys to know when you are visiting their region and you can ask locals for tips as well and you can also publish travel agendas, chat with travellers and locals at your destination, or even be a volunteer Scruff ambassador to help other DScruff guys visiting your home city. Scrufff also acts as your social media guide to GBTQ events which are regularly updated and search through these events, RSVP and see who is going and a lot more.

3. GayFriendFinder

Started in the year 1996, GayFriendFinder is one of the pioneers in the online gay dating industry. GayFriendFinder is one of the first dating websites originally created to cater the sexual needs of local gay men. You can filter men by their age, location and the sort of relationship you are looking for, whether a casual date or a lifelong connection. You also have the ability to filter only paid profiles which wipes out all the fake and inactive profiles. You too should go for a premium membership, if you serious about gay dating. The site promotes an active community and boasts of forums and a well-tailored blog. However, the site itself doesn’t seem to be very active. The users count on the website is over 2 years old, which concerns us as the website doesn’t seem to be in active development. Nonetheless, GayFriendFinder is still one of the best gay dating sites, for people living in an urban scenario where there are a lot of active members around.

4. AdultFriendFinder

AdultFriendFinder is a leading online dating website for people looking for sexual encounters. The parent site of all dating platforms under the Adult Friend Finder Networks, AdultFriendFinder is a reliable and trustworthy option when it comes to gay dating and has the potential to be your best gay dating website. It is backed by a massive user base which does have a lot of hot gay dudes too.

However, it should be noted that the site is more inclined towards casual sex. Coming with an option to set up a blog alongside your profile, webcams and a lot more, it helps you express yourself to the fullest. It should, however, be noted that there is no proper matching system available on the website. You will manually have to look out for potential profiles.

5. Tinder Gay

Tinder is not a new name as far as online dating is concerned and is an extremely popular and well used online dating platform which has served as the base on which many dating platform ideas were conceived and built. Gay Tinder works like the Tinder for straight people with the main and only difference being that the content is more gay oriented and choices more for the gay people which are achieved by setting your preferences to the side you are oriented towards.

The app allows you to meet new people nearby and is said to be more fling friendly though there are many cases where the app was much more than that and you have a good chance of finding a relationship if theta is what you are looking for. You can swipe left to pass upon someone or swipe right to like someone and if they swipe right for you too, then it is a match and you can only start chatting once you have been matched with the other person.

6. Jack’d

Jack’d is a popular location-based gay dating app through which you can meet other gay and bisexual men anytime anywhere and has been made with the ail to decrease bigotry and unacceptable contents by sticking to professionalism and purpose of content which is what makes it different from the other mainstream apps. The app was launched in 2011 and today they have become really popular with a network of around 2 million guys spanning 2000 cities in 180 countries. It aims to bring together strangers with common desires and curiosity to meet new people and network and find meaningful relationships, dates and friendships through the app.

The app is rich in features like worldwide chate which allows you to search and chat with guys anywhere in the world before you get there and the multiple profile photos feature allows you to set up to 5 photos so you can see at least 5 photos of the other guy before you decide whether or not you are interested. You can also see who viewed your profile and secretly match your profile with any guys worldwide by swiping right. You can also check out the guys without being seen using the anonymous browsing option and you can get an insight into the kind of guy he is by measuring his preferences and the time he takes to chat with you.

7. GROWLr

GROWLr is a free gay dating app launched back in 2010 and describes themselves as a complete social networking app for gay bears available for free with over 8 million members from all over the world. It runs on both Android and iOS platforms and you can use the app to send messages, pictures or voice memos r you can view different profiles from around the world or in your neighbourhood. The app does have a lot of annoying tool-tips and pop-up ads but if you manage to dodge all that, then you will make it to a sweet interface which reveals a playground of furry faces who are willing to connect with you.

The app has an event calendar to make use of and there is also a ‘Shout!’ option which can be sent to those in the current community or a set geo-location, much similar to that found in many such services. Users can also estimate the reach of their promotional posts regarding a business, event or greeting so that they know just how many growls they may get. The app also has options for stating HIV and PrEP stats in profiles and there are many kink stuff included in the ‘Looking For’ option which can help ease guys into kink communities without many complications.

8. Hornet

Hornet is the digital home for the LGBTQ+ community and the perfect place to find your prospective matches and was launched in the year 2011. Within this time the community of the Hornet has grown to an overwhelming number of 25 million diverse community members which points to how reliable and popular the app is and the cutting edge technology allows you to find the gay man of your dreams and connect to them in meaningful ways. The app is available for both Android and iOS platforms as well as for the web and with over 25 million guys registered on the app, you are sure to find the match you have been looking for.

While most of the apps are crowded with racism and unacceptable pictures and comments, Hornet has a strict no-nudity policy and you have to be at least 18 or above to be able to use and must be strictly followed. The photos you upload are carefully analysed to find anything that violates their code and such photos will be rejected and so will anything racially discriminating. Hornet also has got much less intrusive ads and many interesting features like in-app articles and obviously, a lot of photos but all things considered, Hornet works like a cleaner and less cluttered version of the Grindr app. You can follow people for updates, see events and stories and you have more probability of finding fling making a top gay hookup apps.

9. Recon

Recon is a fetish gay dating app with a really to the point look which doesn’t make you doubt anything otherwise and is supported on both Android and iOS platforms. It continues to rejuvenate itself and is now a deluxe community for those interested in kinky stuff, whatever may be your taste. Obviously, the app does have a lot of content which might seem offensive and unacceptable on the mainstream services, but this one is all about such things and you can expect to find many faceless profiles and such. The app is also completely free and is your one-stop shop for news and articles on the latest goings-on regarding the gay community, Recon Store and the world of fetish.

You can explore thousands of men who are into different fetishes and find men in your neighbourhood or worldwide depending on what you want. You can also filter the members by age, interests, date created and the members with photos to see the kind of guys that you actually want. You can aslo find out who has checked out your profile and also see who is new to the Recon members list and send them messages or pictures or you can mark the members you like as favourites so that you can visit them easily. You also get a ‘recommended for you’ section on the Home feed which shows a list of guys you might be interested in and you also get updates and info about all upcoming Recon events.

10. Surge

Surge is an all-inclusive online gay dating app that caters to your special requirements and desires and is a popular service with over 3 million registered users and a monthly chat count of 10 million and runs on both Android and iOS platforms. The app is like Tinder as far as functionality and working are concerned but the difference being that all men looking for men and has got more intrusive and peskier ads with a more in profile stats which are the main considerable differences of this app from Tinder. You can opt for a non-premium or premium service and depending on the choices, there are limitations.

If you are a non-premium user, then you can get only one ‘power like’ and may even be tempted by the array of men who have swept right on you but is locked away because you are not a premium member. Premium membership has its own perks like you can reverse your swipe decisions and manually select the geographical location where you want to browse and swipe. You can also go anonymous and chat with only those whom you prfer bu filtering them out with the given choices so that you won’t come across anyone that you may not wish. Premium subscription amounts to $9.99 per month and you can decide whether it is worth it after you try this one out.

11. Chappy

Chappy is a popular gay app with strict policies regarding offensive content and is a good old-fashioned gay dating site for you to find your Mr Right. The app is all about the users meeting new people on their own terms based on their preferences and whatever they are looking for, be it a meaningful and long-term relationship or a more one night kind of thing, you can find it here. In fact, the name ‘Chappy’ is a fusion of the words ‘choice’ and ‘happy’ which is exactly what the app aims at, to make you very happy with your choices. Chappy is also backed by Whitney Wolfe, co-founder of Tinder and CEO of Bumble, another popular dating site.

The main and distinguishing feature of Chappy is the ‘Chappy Scale’ which allows the users to slide it between ‘Mr Right’ to ‘Mr Right Now’ depending on whether they are looking for a longterm relationship or something more casual. This allows the users to avoid the first few minutes of awkward chatting to find out what someone wants or the first few dates before one of you just want to hook up while the other is looking for a more solid relationship. The app also verifies people’s accounts through Facebook to avoid offensive photos and the users can’t display photos that do not feature their faces to ensure the safety of the users.

12. DaddyHunt

DaddyHunt is not an exclusive gay app. It has a very obvious name which points to what the service actually is and in fact, it does invite to you to join a community of over 1 million men for all things Daddy and is exclusively for gay, bisexual and curious Daddies and guys who love them. The community is very authentic and natural and has all sorts of people from different age, race, body type, nationality and more and the men in this community are more serious about relationships and making connections than those found in many of the other mainstream dating sites, or so they claim. But unfortunately, the site has more a number of guys who are seeking older men than older men themselves and if you are fine with that, then this app is something else.

The photos posted on DaddyHunt are face-centric so that you won’t see any offending or unacceptable content over here and they also have a browser feature that stacks photos of all the people nearby your area with three profiles per line to make things easier. The app also allows the users to Poke each other and even allows sending of up to six shout-outs like ‘handsome’, ‘burning hot’, ‘dateable’, ‘funny’, ‘inspiring’ and ‘great smile’. The app also has an Instagram like FotoFeed that allows users to upload photos and to easily browse through different photos of other guys. But still. the user base is kind of low which means that you have only limited options and the free version also has many limitations on features.

Interface structure

Jack’d is the best gay dating app that combines the two major types of gay phone apps. You can choose between browsing a grid of profile pics and swiping them to the left or right one by one (actually, here it can be done by clicking “yes” or “no”). At the below bar, you see the chat and “who viewed me” buttons. The “Profile edit” section is minimalistic and smart. The overall design imitates that of Grindr.

User-friendliness

Just upload a photo, fill in the minimum search criteria and personal info — and the matching algorithm does the rest for you. One of the best gay dating app on the market. The web version is equally comfy for dating and has some additional blogging functionality as well.

The way profiles are sorted

The app has a sophisticated matching algorithm, which shows you potential partners within a certain distance. Unlike other top gay apps, it sorts out most of the guys not ready for an instant meeting. Besides, you can always boost your profile’s visibility with “King of the hill feature.”

The pool size

The number of profiles is substantially lower than in Grindr but still higher than in most new gay dating apps. The concern for many guys can be WHO is using this app, not HOW MANY guys. If you are into twinks, with this app, you are probably barking up the wrong tree.
