Top 10 Gay Apps Ranked by Customer Satisfaction Ratings

Once you’ve decided to use a gay dating or hookup app it can be tough to figure out which ones to use. Typically, most guys ask their friends or do a little bit of research. The problem with getting advice from friends or online critiques is that they basically amount to anecdotes.

Is there a better way? Yes. Go to each app’s page on the IOS or Android platforms and see what actual customers have to say. The only problem with this approach is that it’s REALLY time consuming. And you could go cross-eyed trying to keep the data straight. That’s why our team put together the first list of gay apps ranked by the millions of people who’ve rated them on IOS and Android.

Our methodology: We went to each app’s page on the IOS and Android platforms and got two pieces of data–average ratings and the # of reviews. Then we developed a weighted average between the two platforms (there are WAY more gay app users on Android than IOS and the differences in opinion were sometimes startling).

The result? The first Top 10 List Of Gay Apps Ranked By Customer Satisfaction Reviews. Take a look:

App Weighted Average Ratings # of Reviews#1 Jack’d 4.1 127,856 #2 Hornet 4.1 96,585 #3 Scruff 4.1 68,458 #4 Growlr 4.1 32,112 #5 Tinder 4.0 1,522,854 #6 Mr X 3.8 4,218 #7  3.8 2,669 #8 Daddyhunt 3.7 996 #9 GrindR 3.6 252,765 #10 Adam4Adam 2.4 3,058 Notice that there is actually a 4-way tie for first place, but we subscribe to the „theory of large numbers“ which states that data stability can only be achieved with large numbers. Hence, the 4.1 average rating that Jack’d got is more „stable“ than the 4.1 that GrowlR got because it has triple the number of reviews. Therefore, we ranked it accordingly.

What you see on this page is the total number of reviews and the weighted average between IOS and Android. Click on our gay dating apps reviews page to see the ratings differences between iPhone and Android users.

The Best Gay Dating Sites 2019: Find A New Connection By This Weekend ?

In reality, the chances of meeting someone IRL are increasingly rare. Do not despair, however! There are a myriad of brilliant gay dating sites out there where you can meet Mr/Ms. Right; or where you can have a great time searching. And no, we are not talking gay apps or gay hookup sites, these are a little more … sophisticated and geared towards finding Mr. Right, rather than Mr. Right now…

So why a site over an app? There has clearly been a proliferation of dating apps for gay and straight singletons alike over the past few years; this has totally changed how we interact and date. However, we still like to be a little old-school and there are tons of unsung benefits of using one of the best gay dating sites.

First and foremost, dating sites place far less emphasis on physical appearance than apps do, so you stand a better chance of finding someone to forge a meaningful connection with. You tend to go more in-depth with your profile so you can learn more about the people you’re matching with – hello, informed decisions! (I hear they’re better than drunken decisions!)

As a member of the LGBT community, it can be tricky to find good dating sites that aren’t just geared towards the hetero folk. Luckily, we’re here to help, with some of the best gay dating sites around.

Eight Social Networking Sites for Men Who Love Men

We were contacted today by the founder of the soon to launch social network for gay men . It lead us to take a look around the gay male online social networking space and write the following overview of some of the current market leaders.

Niche social networks are likely a viable business because they allow specialized functionality and a subjective community feel as opposed to general interest sites that defer to either the lowest common denominator or the 15-25 year old demographic. Many people want to participate in social networks, but many people prefer networks set up for people they can relate to. That makes sense to me. From the proudly professional to the happily hedonistic, there may be something on this list for everyone – or at least everyone who’s a gay man.

As you can see by the following short profiles, these sites targeting a demographic with two traits in common (gay men) are all very different. Just as there’s a wide diversity of gay men in the world, there may well be ample room for a variety of gay male social networking sites – presuming they are able to build sufficient critical mass for monetization and financial viability.

I won’t pretend to speak for gay men and I’m sure there are some sites I’m missing, but these appear to be the most talked about gay male social networking sites online. You can take or leave my reviews of them. Maybe they’ll be a look inside a niche market for some of our readers and maybe they’ll be links of love for others. I tried to note the ones where the guys were particularly hot.

Jake calls itself the world’s largest gay professional community. It’s very British. The company reports almost 30,000 members sending two million messages to each other over the past year and attending exclusive real world events together. Unlike others that discourage independent commercial activity, this site encourages users to advertise their own businesses and directly monetize their involvement with the site.

There’s a professional but stylish look and feel to Jake. Users are encouraged to use their real names and free accounts offer only two photos – one for yourself and one for your company’s logo for example.

Paid accounts are £10 per month. Paid members can access the dating section of the site, get more storage in their internal mailboxes, get priority invitations to real world events and bring guests, gain access to “business briefings” and a number of other things.

ManJam is probably the most widely discussed of all of these social networking sites. It calls itself “a unique social network” but in fact it’s just one of many similarly branded copycat sites from JuxMedia Ltd. ManJam offers listings for rooms and houses for rent or to live in rent-free. There are listings from all around the world. There are job and business listings, many of which are in the Middle East. There are personal profile listings with text and video comments enabled for members. Free membership gets users access to rental listing details, IM, video and audio messaging. There is also a mobile component to ManJam. Profiles on this site support transgendered identities.

Premium members get entries in any of the categories moved up to the top of their respective listings. Paid accounts are $20 per month, $42 per quarter or $90 per year. This site looks solid enough and usability is decent, though I did get one 404. It doesn’t have the upper class affects of but ManJam is hardly for low baggers either. If hot unclothed chests are what you are looking for then ManJam may be where you want to go. Ohlalaguys

Ohlalalguys is a rebranded version of JuxMedia’s ManJam with even worse site navigation added. See also Bentlads, another one of these sites.

Lovetastic is explicitely not for men looking to hook up with hunks of burning love. “Finally, gay personals that treat you like a person,” the site says. Lovetastic says its goal is to bring together husbands. It used to be called Scene404 and the old landing page is pretty cute, in a dorky kind of way.

Free account holders can post profiles, browse the site and receive messages. Paid accounts, starting at $6 per month, enable users to send messages and chat.

Lovetastic’s interface is the cleanest, simplest and easiest on the eyes of any of these sites. In some ways it’s got more class than any of them. There are randomly generated interview questions for profiles and nude or shirtless pictures are prohibited. The site is ad free. If this is the site for you, you’ll likely know as soon as you visit it.

Connexion is LGBT online networking with a suffix. In addition to dating and events organizing the site focuses on low level political activity and news. There’s an RSS feed for news from the site. The site is a little awkward but not highly sexualized. Transgendered identity is supported on this site but not gender queer identities outside of those based on the Male/Female binary.

There aren’t paid memberships available for this nonprofit site but there are a handful of very unobtrusive ads. If you’re looking for news and political discussion in your LGBT social networking check out Connexion. OutEverywhere

OutEverywhere is a paid service for men and women in select countries around the world. It is very text intensive, site navigation is unbearable. This site has an emphasis on promoting real world events and venues. I couldn’t handle looking at it very much but there is a tag cloud if you scroll way down on the front page! Memberships are £19.95 for 6 months with a 28 free trial period.

DList looks like it was designed by someone from Gawker – in fact I’m sure it was. It’s a pretty straightforward social networking site with a good feature set. User blogs, topical site blogs to read, a music player on profile pages. It’s ad supported without premium accounts.

Without seeing more of what the community is like on DList, I imagine this site will be succeed if it can keep its costs down. It’s got all the basics taken care of and is attractive. BigJock

The site that inspired this post, BigJock, will launch its full featured version on early next month. The version that’s already up looks very nice though. It will include all the basics plus a Hot or Not picture rating component. The site will be free and ad supported. You can sign up now for an account and enter to win an iPod. BigJock has a long way to go before it can compete with the heavyweights above, but anything is possible and there are clearly niche approaches underway throughout the gay male social networking market. And that monkey logo is not to be missed.

Gay dating apps battle for supremacy in China

SHANGHAI—It wasn’t so long ago that „Geng Le,“ the former policeman who founded one of China’s earliest gay websites was being forced to play cat-and-mouse with the Chinese authorities just to keep it online.

When the government launched a campaign to „purify the Internet“ in 2006, Geng’s site, , was repeatedly shut down. Every time, he’d move his server to another city and launch again. „There was a time when we were constantly moving our servers,“ he said.

How times have changed. Geng’s website is now free to cover gay news from around the world, and even carries advertising for a company helping gay Chinese men start families through surrogacy in the U.S.

Three years ago, Geng launched a gay-dating app called Blued, which he claims is the most widely used globally, with 15 million users (including three million outside China.)

Now he’s eyeing global domination. After receiving $30 million in funding from a Silicon Valley venture capital firm late last year, Blued launched an English-language version of the app in February and set up offices in the U.S., Thailand and Taiwan. A Thai- and Spanish-language version of Blued is coming soon, along with a possible IPO.

When Geng, whose given name is Ma Baoli, graduated from university in 2000, he didn’t understand why he wasn’t interested in finding a girlfriend and getting married like his classmates. He went online in search of answers and was shocked to read on Chinese websites that being gay was considered a disease that needed to be treated.

„That’s why I started to have the idea that I wanted to build a website to show the public, the media and the authorities that being gay is absolutely normal,“ Geng says.

Soon after, he started under the pseudonym Geng Le to protect his identity at his day job as a policeman. The website survived the government shutdowns until 2008 when the state-run Xinhua news agency ran a groundbreaking report about the struggles of gay people in China.

„I told my team that we might have the chance to witness China shifting from a country that discriminates against gays to a society that accepts them,“ he says. „Six years has passed, and I was proven right.“

Government officials have lauded Geng for his work to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS in China. These efforts, along with the newly open environment toward gays and lesbians in the country, allowed him to launch Blued in 2012.

The name is meaningful to Geng. When he was at the police academy, he fell in love with another recruit while training on the beach next to the blue sea. „I wanted to remember him, as well as the beautiful feelings from my youth,“ he says.

A gay wedding in Beijing, gay ’Friends’ on TV Blued is the most widely used gay-dating app in China but it now has competition. In 2013, a new gay-dating app called Zank appeared on the scene, launched by a computer engineer who goes by the pseudonym, Ling Jueding. (His real name is Hou Jiliang.)

Ling also struggled with his sexuality until reading a best-selling — and controversial — book called Homosexuality in China, written by a sexologist in the mid-1990s. „When we were young, we were restricted by our parents and when we grew up, we were restricted by society,“ Ling tells Mashable. „We were too restricted by the environment to live for ourselves.“

Things are changing quickly. Although gay marriage is not legal in China, and many people still hide their sexuality from family and friends, Ling married his partner, Gino Chen, in a ceremony in Beijing last month—the day after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized gay marriage in the U.S.

And his app is making dating easier for the next generation. He estimates Zank has about 8 million users, nearly all of them in China. The company received $3.2 million in private funding last year and launched an English-language version in June. But Ling says he’s not focused on overseas expansion — yet.

„China is a big market full of potential,“ he says.

Zank is perhaps best known in the West for its likeness to the popular Boston-based gay-dating app Jack’d.

Ling admits „learning and borrowing some advantages from Jack’d,” but maintains his app puts a higher priority on social-networking groups for users with shared interests, such as swimming and badminton.

Zank has has also expanded into other forms of entertainment, producing a popular television serial for WeChat and Youku (the Chinese YouTube) about a group of gay men living with a straight woman in Beijing—a mixture of ‚Friends‘ and ‚Looking.‘

„It’s very smart marketing — creating something to make gay people feel a sense of belonging,“ says Xing Zhao, a 34-year-old menswear designer in Shanghai who watches the show and uses Zank occasionally for dating.

Can Grindr keep pace? Blued and Zank have done well locally because they know how young Chinese millennials communicate — both have a WeChat-like ‚Moments‘ feed, for example, where users can post vacation photos or other pictures from daily life. Blued also has an LGBT newsfeed and travel maps to find gay spots in cities like Toronto and Los Angeles.

But Grindr isn’t giving up. Blocked by the Chinese government until June 2011, the app’s user numbers have been steadily climbing ever since, though a spokesman for the company declined to give current figures. The company is also increasing its profile in China by partnering with the Beijing Gender Health and Education Institute to raise awareness of gay rights in the country.

Xing, the menswear designer, prefers the Chinese apps. But he’s quick to note that in terms of the guys, it doesn’t really matter which one you use.

„I think a lot of people are on all these apps,“ he says. „So it’s always the same people.“

The best LGBTQ dating apps for Android and iOS

More of us are meeting our partners online than ever before, according to a 2020 survey by Pew Research, and when it comes to gay couples, this is even more common — in fact, 28% of those surveyed met their current squeeze online. Sadly, many LGBTQ online daters have horror stories to share of harassment or bullying online. Over half say they have received a sexually explicit image or message they didn’t ask for — compared to 32% of straight online daters — and 41% have experienced being called an offensive name on dating sites or apps. So when you’re hunting for a safe, inclusive space to date, how do you know which apps to choose?

There’s no need to worry, as we’ve selected some of the best LGBTQ dating apps for Android and iOS. Learning more about the different features of these apps will help you find an app that corresponds to the kind of online dating experience you would like to have.

The best dating apps for gay users, since meeting people IRL is hellish

Most people have at least one horror story about online dating. It’s a rite of passage that single people love to hate.

But the horror stories look a little different for members of the LGBTQ community. On top of the classic awkward Hinge date anecdotes and screenshots of a corny bio seeping with secondhand embarrassment, gay singles deal with all sorts of alienating interactions. Baseless questioning of sexual history, harassment, and fetishization — most of it coming from cis straight people who shouldn’t have popped up in your feed in the first place — don’t exactly give one butterflies.

Still, dating apps have become crucial means of introduction for gay folks looking to settle down. A 2019 Stanford study and 2020 Pew Research survey found that meeting online has become the most popular way for U.S. couples to connect — especially for gay couples, of which 28% met their current partner online (versus 11% of straight couples).

But the Pew survey also dredged up those ugly experiences with harassment. This could be where options that bar heterosexual users, like HER and Grindr, come in. Their perfectly-tailored environments are so well-known in the gay community that they’re essentially in a league of their own.

That’s not to say that they’re in the queer dating app market alone. Apps like Zoe, Taimi, and Scruff exist. But their plateauing popularity can be attributed to similar complaints: too many scam profiles and too few legitimate users (ones within a reasonable distance to plan a date, anyway). Chappy was a promising app for gay men that shut down just as it was gaining serious traction.

And at the end of the day, „everyone“ apps are simply where masses of queer users are. Keeping Tinder on the back burner isn’t just a straight people thing, especially for those who live in less-populated areas where Grindr and HER have slim pickings. Plus, some mainstream apps do deserve credit for the steps they’ve taken to create a more inclusive atmosphere. Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge now offer lots of sexual orientation and gender identity options. OkCupid gets kudos for making that change years ago, as well as making social justice a core part of compatibility scoring — which kind of self-curates the type of people on the app.

If you’re LGBTQ and hate leaving your home, you’re not alone. Here are the best dating apps and sites that’ll maximize your opportunities while minimizing your human contact. Bless. (For the best dating apps specifically for lesbians, go here.)

The 5 Best Dating Sites in Germany (What I Learned)

German Television Presenter – Andrea Kaiser (Source: Wikimedia Commons)

Here is the quick list of my top 5 dating sites in Germany. I’ll go into more detail in my reviews below.

When I first traveled to Germany way back in 2000, online dating really didn’t exist. There were a few sites, but none of them had enough members to make it worthwhile.

Since that time, dating via either your PC or smartphone has exploded in popularity. When I was in Frankfurt, Munich, Stuttgart, Ulm, and Heidelberg, I would regularly login to these sites and apps to find thousands of users online at any given time.

While you can find good sites in pretty much any niche, the sites and apps I’ll discuss below are geared towards mainstream daters.

Oh, and a couple more things before I get into the reviews…a couple of these sites aren’t accessible outside of Germany. So, if you try to sign up, you will be blocked because of your foreign IP address. For best results, fly to Germany first and then sign up.

Also, although I won’t discuss Tinder in this post, it is worth downloading it to your phone even though I don’t recommend it for finding a long term relationship. You can definitely find some women (and men) on there interested in a real relationship, but in my experience, it is more geared towards 20 and 30-somethings who want a short-term fling.

German Model – Ann Kathrin Brommel (Source: Wikimedia Commons)

Without further ado, here is my detailed analysis of the best dating sites in Germany.

is the best online dating site in Germany if you are 35+ years old (if you are in your 20s or early 30s, continue on to the #2 site below). It is widely considered the most important dating website across all of Europe.

eDarling is another personality-test driven dating website for residents of Germany. eDarling is owned and operated by the same people behind the US website eHarmony. Therefore, a lot of the features you would see on eHarmony, you would also get on eDarling.

A site with more women than men, there is no specific type of single person for the site as people of all ages are on there surfing for dates, although a majority of the members are over 35, as I mentioned before.

eDarling is clean and professional, runs smoothly, has over 2 million members and employs a great matching system based on a lengthy, detailed personality test. The only drawback is that you’ll have to pay for a premium membership to do much of anything on the site.

Bottom-line, if you’re serious about finding a quality match in Germany, and you’re willing to pay, eDarling is a must-try site.

To start, select your gender and match gender, email and password. Next, complete eDarling’s personality test, which takes 30-40 minutes to complete and includes around 200 questions about your feelings, values, interests, passions and basic information. Once you’re done with the test, upload a photo if you like. Once eDarling is finished calculating your matches, you are free to browse around.

There remains quite a lot to fill out in your profile, however, including 12 sections to write about yourself (What my partner should know about me, etc.) and a section to select what habits and traits you would like and dislike in a partner, choosing 10 for each from a long list (e.g. “My partner should be gentle and friendly” and “My partner should not see themselves as a permanently pitiable victim.”).

eDarling takes a unique approach here, as there are no standard search or browse features. Rather, eDarling uses complex computer algorithms to compare your test results with those of others on the site, to recommend matches to you daily.

eDarling limits you to 7 new matches a day, and as a free member, you can view almost everything in the profiles of your matches, including their personality reports. Unfortunately, you can’t see their photos.

As a premium member, you’ll get to see 20 new profiles a day as part of the “What If…” feature.

Free members can add other profiles to their favorites and send Smiles and 5 Questions, which are chosen from 53 options. Example questions include:

Premium members can also send basic text messages to each other.

eDarling’s personality test is truly top-of-the-line. It was developed by expert psychologists to measure 29 aspects of your personality, and upon completion of the test, eDarling provides you with an in-depth Personality Dimension Analysis. This analysis compares your levels of Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, Openness, Extraversion, Neuroticism to the average of other members.

I really enjoyed being able to read the personality reports of my matches. These reports, combined with their basic information and what they wrote about themselves in the available text boxes, give you a highly detailed look into what these people are like.

Even as a free member, without any photos to look at, I was amazed at how well I felt I knew some of these people, just from reading through their profiles.

Like I mentioned in the opening, if you have ever used eHarmony, the site is very similar except it’s in Germany. The site is really for those who are more serious about finding someone and not for a simple hookup.

The personality questionnaire is time consuming and can be a pain, but once you finish it, you feel better about the matches they give you, and it’s interesting to see what other members answered in comparison to yours.

If you’re in Germany or into German men or women, it’s definitely worth the investment, provided you want to find the future love of your life.

LoveScout24 is the second best online dating site in Germany. The site was started in 1997 under the name People United.

LoveScout24 is available to users in Germany, Spain, Holland, Italy, France, Switzerland and Austria, with around 1 million active members in Germany alone. This site is available in the native language in each of these countries, but is not available in English.

What’s more, the site uses advanced security features to check your IP address location and keep you from registering if you’re not in one of their supported countries. LoveScout24 also seems to repel Google Translator for some reason, which makes it difficult to navigate.

If you live outside of Europe, and/or only speak English, this site will be a hassle. But if you are located in one LoveScout24’s supported European countries, and you speak the language, this site is worth checking out, as it has solid features and thousands of quality profiles to look through.

Sign up is quicker than it seems. Enter your gender and the gender you’re looking for in a match, your birthday, username, password and email address to begin. From here you’ll be prompted a number of questions about yourself and your ideal match.

There are around 20 questions, which you can answer now, or later if you like. To start browsing profiles, simply click on the tab for searches and start browsing.

LoveScout24’s search function includes Basic and Advanced searches. Basic searches include 5 options:

For Advanced searches, you have numerous filters to choose from when creating your search, to ensure that you find that perfect match. Searches can be saved for convenient later use as well.

You can look through profiles who are looking for matches that fit your own criteria. You can also give the Shuffle feature a spin. This is basically a Tinder-like feature, in which you’re shown random profiles to like or dislike, and both of you are notified when there’s a mutual match.

To open communication with a potential match, you’ll first have to upgrade to premium. Then you can start things off with a “smile”.

From there, you can move on to actual messages, which unfortunately are text only. You can also start live chats with other online members, also text only. Users can also filter who they receive messages from, and block up to 100 members.

Two features stood out to me on LoveScout24. First, there is the once-a-week email you’ll receive, containing a statistic summary of your profile’s activity, including how many profile visits you received, how many messages were sent and received, etc.

If you’re a busy online dater, this will be helpful in keeping track of all your activities.

Second is the #LoveYourImperfections portion of the sign-up process, where you select two of your imperfections to stand proudly behind. Personally, I am a Night Owl, and I love to eat! This was a small feature, but refreshing to see because so much of online dating seems to revolve around trying to impress and seem as perfect as possible to attract the ideal mate.

is a good third choice if you’ve run out of options at the site above.

is the German version of Parship, a dating website that was originally launched in Germany in 2001 and went international in 2002. Parship is now available in many European countries (England, France, Holland, Italy, Spain and Sweden), and Mexico.

Parship is a serious dating website, built around a strong matching system. Signing up requires a lengthy personality test, and your matches are based on your test results.

While some may be turned off by the time commitment this test requires, I personally love tests like these. If you live in Germany, and you’re seriously looking for a partner, take a look at Parship.

Start with your gender, your ideal match gender, email and password. After this, it’s time for the PARSHIP Principle, a scientific questionnaire that will take you 20-60 minutes to complete, depending on how well you know yourself and how quick you normally are with personality tests.

This test is mostly made up of multiple-choice questions, but also includes more abstract sections like spontaneously choosing your preference between two abstract images, or picking a title for a dream-image. This test serves as a great barrier-to-entry, weeding out people who aren’t serious about dating. And shockingly you are only done with 35% of your profile after completing the test!

Unlike most other dating sites out there, Parship doesn’t have a straightforward search feature. While you can see who is online, or who last logged-in, and you can filter your matches by some basic information, the main focus is on Parship’s partner recommendations.

Parship compares your test results with other matches, and shows you a compatibility score for each profile. This score is summarized by “Matching Points”, of which my highest match had 113.

When browsing through matches, you’ll quickly notice that you can only see blurry photos to begin with. Users either have to explicitly give others’ access to their photos or upgrade to premium to see photos made public. You also don’t see names to begin with, just their occupation (e.g. Nurse, Marketing Executive, etc.), though you can take notes or give profiles nicknames to help you differentiate them.

To contact other members, you’ll first have to complete at least 50% of your profile. Once you’ve done that, you can add them to your favorites, release your photos to them, or send a compliment (small thumbs up button), a Smile, an “icebreaker” message (mini multiple choice questionnaire), or a text message.

Beyond these basics, you’ll communicate a lot to every profile that visits you without saying a word, simply because Parship’s profile compatibility reports are so detailed.

While matching systems can be found on many different dating websites, Parship’s shines as especially impressive. 40 years of research are behind their detailed compatibility test, developed by a Hamburg University Psychology professor. Premium members gain access to their full test results, a whopping 40-page psychological evaluation.

But even as a free member, I was pleasantly surprised how much information is available to you. I read through my test results and learned quite a bit about myself, how I work in relationship, and what kind of partner would fit me well. I also found the comparisons between my results and those of other profiles helpful, detailed and illuminating.

Parship is so confident in this matching system that they offer a Contact Guarantee: If you have not successfully made contact with another member within 6 months of signing up for a premium membership, you’ll be given another 6-month membership for free.

The Parship app is available on both Apple and Android platforms, making it accessible to just about everyone. The most powerful and unique feature of the app is the Parship test, which is proprietary and specific to this app. By working with this unique testing system, Parship can bring something new to the table that other sites can’t.

Finya is a dating site for residents of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The site launched in 2001, has over 1 million members, and is completely free to use. This can have both positive and negative effects on your experience of this site.

The positives are obvious: free is always in the budget! Yet, because it’s free, Finya tends to attract many fake and scammy profiles, and Finya keeps itself free by selling advertising space on the site, which many other users have reported as overly intrusive.

I saw hardly any ads in my time on the site, however. Overall, Finya is a great site with an inviting design, solid features, and a huge pool of users to search through. If you’re on a tight budget and looking for some German love, make sure you give this site a try.

Signing up is just two steps. First, enter your gender, preferred match gender, email, username, birthday and location. Second, check your email for a verification link. And you’re done.

When you’re ready, you can finish filling out your profile by sharing your education, occupation, appearance, what you like and don’t like, and your favorite brands. You can also define who you are looking for, upload photos, and answer up to 100 questions, in 12 categories, including Love and Relationships, Lifestyle, and Character.

When searching for matches, you have many filter options. There are all the basic filters you’d expect to see (age, location, photos, etc.) and a few unique options, such as whether they’re willing to relocate or their photo rating score.

Another option is the Gallery feature, a Tinder-like feature which shows you photos of profiles to like or pass on, and you are notified when there is a mutual match. You can see all the profiles you have liked, and all those who have liked you back, in the Matching tab.

You can also find profiles in the Voting section, detailed below.

Communication features are basic but solid. You can add profiles to your favorites, start instant chats with users that are online, and send messages, which are text only. Unfortunately, there is no audio or video support for messages or chat.

In the Voting section, you are shown two profile photos side-by-side, and you choose who you find more attractive. You can filter the profiles by age, and your selections are kept anonymous.

Finya will calculate how attractive each profile is on a scale of 1-10, based on your and other users’ selections when using this feature. Note that you need to have a profile photo uploaded for your selections to be registered.

A small feature I liked was the use of dots and dashes to indicate the activity levels of users:

OKCupid is known for relying heavily on user-provided data to find better matches for its diverse user base. This free service lets you answer as many or as few questions as you prefer, and it uses your responses to calculate good potential partners.

Although OKCupid targets a massive international crowd, some German users have complained about the low quality. For instance, although having around 30 million possible matches to choose from seems great, the service’s free nature means you’ll probably have to filter through scams to find your next dream date or casual fling.

I recommend you try OKCupid as a last resort if you have run out of options at the sites above (I’ve run into some crazy people on OKCupid).

OKCupid lets users register via Facebook or create completely independent profiles. Everyone chooses a unique username and password, and at the start, you’ll be given a chance to write your own witty description and answer five basic personality questions. From there, all you have to do is “Like” three profiles so that the site knows what you’re looking for.

Signing up doesn’t take long unless you really want to go all out. You can add photos, answer numerous questions and share in-depth personal stats or simply follow the default prompts to get to meeting people quicker. How to Locate Potential Matches

OKCupid has a pretty simple default interface that lets you browse through other users easily by photo, username, locations and age. Each profile listing also shows percentages. These numbers represent how well the site’s algorithm thinks you match or clash depending on the answers you’ve provided to the questions.

In addition to checking out how others described themselves, you can get an idea of what sort of issues matter to them by browsing their profiles in detail. After finding someone you fancy or dislike, you can use the Quickmatch function to indicate how you feel. If two people like each other, the site lets them know.

OKCupid makes it easy to communicate with someone by liking them, and those with Premium memberships can view their incoming likes. Or send a message using the free text feature. Bear in mind that people can see who viewed their profiles, so your subtle browsing is likely to attract notice.

Unique Site FeaturesIn addition to answering questions about your habits, preferences and sexuality, you can automatically filter out people who don’t fit the bill. For each question you answer, simply pick the responses you’d find acceptable from a potential partner.

Although there are thousands of available questions, many users report that answering as many as possible helps them find better matches. These answers also let the site get a better feel for your personality. For an interesting look behind the scenes of the OKCupid landscape, you can check out the site’s development blog to discover more.

As I mention in my , with all of the dating sites above, just like the real world, there will be women or men who you will not click with or who don’t respond to your messages (or just disappear). There will be women or men who might only be interested in helping you to part with your money. That is life. Just keep sending out messages and reach out until you find the person you are looking for and get success.

As is typical with online dating, expect a response rate of around 1-10%. This response rate will depend largely on the quality of your photos and how good your profile is. (response rate = people who will respond back to you to whom you sent an introduction message).

So there you have it. The best dating sites and apps in Germany.

Finding love on dating sites can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to be. We compare some of the best online gay dating websites and apps for finding the one online. From the top dating sites, to those that offer free matches, this is the place to start.

Saul is TheTop10Site’s gay dating editor, and one of our senior staff writers. In addition to writing content, Saul manages a party production company and is an avid surfer.

Lex

Ever find yourself longing for the uncomplicated days of Craigslist personals? Then opt for Lex, a no-frills app with a healthy dose of ’80s and ’90s nostalgia. Inspired by the personal ads in On Our Backs, the woman-run erotica mag, it takes a simple yet charming approach to dating in the modern age. There are no cheesy selfies, just the opportunity to write an engaging personal ad that will — hopefully — help you meet your match.

The app isn’t just for dating — members have used it to make friends, start a band, and even plan a protest, according to its founder. Give shallow selfie swiping a miss and make a real, meaningful connection, or post in the “Missed Connection” section and you might find yourself getting together with that guy you saw at the farmers market but were too shy to speak to.

The app’s design is minimalist and inclusive, allowing you to choose your pronouns and asking you to agree to its strict rules of conduct for new members before you get started. You can browse the personals or search by keyword — so finding somebody who loves pizza as much as you do is totally achievable — send private messages, and save people’s posts to reply later, when you have more time. All this, and it’s totally free to use.

Surge

Surge is, dare we say, the Tinder for gay dating. It functions similarly to Tinder, with a swipe right to like and left to reject style — there’s even a Power Message option that’s the equivalent of a Super Like. It’s quick to sign up and you can share photos from your camera roll, Facebook, or Instagram to your profile. It’s free too, and you can swipe through potential matches (a limited number each day) and start chatting without paying a penny.

We love that Surge is all about inclusivity, and their motto “No Labels” means that whoever you are, you can be yourself while searching for your ideal match.

If you decide to upgrade to Premium membership, you’ll enjoy access to features like Who Liked Me, as well as Private Mode, where you’re only visible to guys you’ve already liked, the aforementioned Power Message to get you noticed, After-Match Photos, which allows you to upload private photos only visible to your matches, and several other handy features. You can sign up for a one-, three-, or 12-month membership starting at $7 a month.

Tser

Tser claims to be “the best TS and trans dating app for crossdressers and transgender women and men.” A pretty bold claim — but judging by the app’s popularity, it may well be true. Everyone’s welcome on the app, and it’s a safe space to be yourself, whatever your gender identity. It’s free to use and there’s a clean community policy that means no pornography or nudity is allowed.

Getting started involves filling out a few personal details, adding a couple of sentences (or a few paragraphs, if you’ve more to say) about what you’re looking for from the app, and uploading a photo. If we had one criticism during signup, it’s that the photo uploading process is very slow, and sometimes causes the app to crash.

Once you’re in, you can browse profiles and search for transgender singles near you using the filters. You can message matches for free, or start a voice message chat if you prefer to hear their voice. There’s a premium subscription that gives you access to additional features and starts from $13 a month, or you can sign up for three months for $27 or six months for $46.

It’s worth noting that the user base for Tser is still pretty small — but growing by the day — so unless you live in a major city, you may not find many matches near you.

Bumble

Fans of Chappy, the gay dating site that shut down just as it was starting to peak in popularity will be pleased to hear that the app joined forces with Bumble. Bumble is committed to fighting inequality and creating a space for healthy, safe connections across the LGBTQ+ spectrum, so where better to find your match? Traditionally Bumble asked women to make the first move on their app — but when it comes to same-sex matches, either party can make the first move, and the other party has 24 hours to respond and start a chat.

When you first open the app you’re presented with the option to log in with your Facebook account or use a mobile number. You’ll set up your profile, which includes a startling amount of information, including what you’re looking for, what pets you have, and a wide range of sexual orientation and gender identity options. You also get to choose whether to display your gender identity to matches.

A new section called COVID Dating lets you set preferences for dating during the pandemic — for example, whether you’re okay with IRL dating or prefer to date virtually for now, and whether indoors or outdoors dates are your ideal. This will only be displayed to your matches, but it’s definitely a helpful way of gauging what people are open to, without having to ask. You can also connect your Instagram and Spotify to share even more about yourself with potential matches.

Bumble has a huge user base, making it easier to find matches in your area, and it’s free to use — plus the 24-hour time limit to make a connection means you’re less likely to let matches languish and be reshuffled into the deck. The recent addition of in-app voice and video chat functions, as well as the option to send audio notes, gives you plenty of ways to communicate if typing lengthy messages isn’t your thing. You can subscribe to Bumble Boost or Premium from $9 a month to access all of Bumble’s additional features.

Scruff

Scruff allows you to browse through over 15 million profiles from nearby and around the world. Targeted toward men who have, or like, a little scruff, the app gives you options to search for different types of guys. The developers at Scruff have taken lots of steps to make the app more inclusive to everyone in the LGBTQ community, from being the first to include an option for the transgender community to removing the requirement to list an ethnicity when setting up a profile. It’s pretty easy to get started — just create your profile, entering your date of birth and uploading a photo to start matching. Profiles are pretty detailed, but you don’t have to fill everything out upfront. The app operates on a familiar swipe left or right format — but we love that if you can’t decide right now, you can choose “Ask Later” to be shown the guy again tomorrow.

There are loads of cool features to help you connect, like the quiz show, where you can meet new guys and compete for a cash prize, a social calendar of LGBTQ events in your area or worldwide, and Venture, your travel companion that lets you connect with guys in your destination city before you arrive.

Scruff is a free app, but if you want access to more advanced search features, user videos, and message histories, you’ll need to pay $20 a month for Scruff Pro.

Grindr

If you’re tired of dating apps that don’t include the trans and queer communities, Grindr is a perfect solution. As the largest social networking app for gay, bi, trans, and queer people, you won’t be short of choices when looking for a date. The app uses your phone’s location to find other members nearby and sign up is quick and easy – just fill out the form or sign up with your Facebook account.

The app will show you who’s in your area, with large, high-quality pictures, so there are no surprises. Don’t want to message someone right now? Just favorite them to speak to them later. You can even browse other locations, so if you’re moving to a new city or heading away for the weekend, you can meet people before you arrive. If something goes wrong, you can easily report or block accounts – but it’s worth noting free users get a limited number of blocks; a bit of a turnoff.

Grindr is free to use, with limits. With a free account, you can only see 100 profiles in your area – and there are other limits too. To lift them, you can subscribe to Grindr XTRA or Unlimited. XTRA lets you see up to 600 profiles, remove ads, and view who’s online now, plus a range of other upgrades – and it costs $20 per month. For the top-notch experience, Unlimited lets you view unlimited profiles, browse in Incognito mode, and see who’s viewed your profile. It also unlocks expiring photo mode, where images sent expire after 10 seconds – and the handy chat translate feature that lets you communicate with those who don’t speak your language. It’s a pretty hefty investment though at $25 a month.

Tinder

Tinder is not just for straight folks — it lets you swipe right on people across the LGBTQ spectrum. Tinder has also added several new features to make it welcoming to trans and queer users. The More Genders feature gives users a wide variety of gender identity options, while the Traveler Alert feature warns users who have identified themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and/or queer when they enter a country that criminalizes this. This feature ensures your profile won’t be automatically shown when you’re traveling to one of these locations.

You don’t need a Facebook account to sign up for Tinder – but you do have to be older than 18. It’s quick to get started – just write a 500 character bio and add up to six images. There’s the option to link Tinder to your Instagram account too. Adjust your Discovery settings for who can find your profile, from distance and proximity to age range and gender identity.

Tinder operates on the now-familiar swipe right mechanism. You’ll only see a photo, name, and age for each prospective date. Tap on the photo to see some additional information – then swipe right to like them or left to pass. If you’ve fallen instantly in love, you can use a “super like” which the other person will receive instantly. If you both swipe right on each other, you’ll see a screen telling you you’ve matched and inviting you to chat. Tinder also recently adding video chat, great for getting to know each other better before meeting up, or dating during lockdown.

Tinder is free but you get limited swipes each day. To enjoy unlimited swipes and a whole host of other features, you can sign up for Tinder Plus or Tinder Gold. But the best thing about Tinder? It’s one of the most popular dating apps, so you’re more likely to meet someone you like who lives near you than on some of the other apps – and most people on the app actually want to meet up in real-life, whether for a hookup or something more.

Hornet

Boasting over 30 million registered users, Hornet is one of the world’s largest dating apps designed by the gay community for the gay community. Founded in 2011, it’s as much a social network as a dating app, enabling you to create your own news feeds, join groups, and generally immerse yourself in online gay communities. Follow those you’re interested in and see their posts, videos, and photos — and share your own in the news feed. Use the virtual travel feature to explore the world, and engage in interesting conversations about every topic under the sun in curated discussions.

Hornet makes it easy to connect with others for friendship, hookups, and relationships — just use the filters to find the right person, comment on or like their posts, or send a heartstring to make a quick intro. The app takes privacy seriously, and there’s free 24/7 support if you need it.

It’s free to use, although you can subscribe to Premium to enjoy additional features — there’s a fixed period subscription or a rolling monthly one, starting from $10 per month.

Professional matchmaker or do-it-yourself, there are plenty of options

Photo © highwaystarz – FotoliaMeeting people should be easy. After all, the world is full of them and they’re fairly evenly divided in terms of gender, height and so forth. But as a review of literature stretching back to cave drawings will tell you, meeting — and hanging onto — the right person isn’t all that easy.

This is where dating services come in. They’re not perfect but they’re better than ordering brides by mail or submitting to your mother’s idea of who your perfect match is.

Just like other means of meeting candidates for romance, dating sites are fraught with peril. You could meet people you don’t like, people who don’t like you, people who are boring or even downright dangerous. But the same is true of just about any other method of meeting people. Ever ridden the subway?

What it comes down to is that there are risks in everything so as long as you take the obvious precautions — don’t meet strangers in dark places, don’t send money to someone you’ve never met and don’t reveal all your personal information in a single gush — online dating is probably less dangerous than crossing a busy street or trying to clean out your gutters on a windy day.

One thing’s for sure — there’s no shortage of dating sites. No one really knows how many there are but the answer is somewhere in the thousands. Like people, they come in all shapes and sizes. Some are free, others are pricey. Some take everybody, some are selective. Many cater to individual tastes — there are sites for gays, Jews, Christians, equestrians, millionaires, Hispanics and old white people. There are even dating sites for virgins.

Here’s a sampling to get you started. We’re not saying these are the best sites for you — that’s something you need to decide for yourself — but like examining puppies or seaside condos, looking can be half the fun. Might as well get started.

Most downloaded dating apps in 50 countries, 2015

With data provided exclusively to the BBC by analytics company App Annie, it is also possible to tell the story of the apps behind the phenomenon.Looking at 50 of the world’s biggest app markets, two names dominated in 2015: Badoo and a decade after it launched, Badoo had the top dating app in 21 was the most downloaded dating app in 18 countries and came a close second to Badoo in many others.

Asia

The dominance of Tinder and Badoo does not extend to East Asia, where each country has a very specific preference. In China, Momo is trying to escape its origins as a dating app and become a social network.

Shruti, 30, and Nitin, 31, live in Delhi and work in finance. They found each other on TrulyMadly, an Indian-made app, which came second to Tinder in terms of downloads in 2015. They got married in November.“At first we didn’t inform our parents that we met through a dating app, but once they knew, they accepted it because we are both from the same religion and caste,“ says Shruti.“Parents don’t think you’ll get a good partner through dating apps because people are there just to have fake relationships and will just spend some time with a girl or boy then leave.““With arranged marriages, you meet the girl and her family, and then after a week or so, you have to reply,“ says Nitin. „I don’t like that because you don’t have freedom or control.“

„They will just allow us to meet that person for 15 or 20 minutes in some private place, but you cannot judge a person by just meeting them within 15 or 20 minutes,“ says Shruti.

Middle East

Egypt and Saudi Arabia use apps that have little popularity beyond their borders. Apart from Egypt, the only other country where Frim has a foothold is Russia. Similarly, WhosHere is specific to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

Aisha, whose name has been changed, is 42 and lives with her parents in Kuwait. She does not want to reveal her identity because dating is not accepted in her culture. „I use Badoo. I’m trying to find some friends around the world. I’m trying to find people with an open mind, who are kind, intelligent, smart. People who really try to know and discover others. „At the first meeting, I am a little bit shy as an Arabian girl meeting a strange person. I have a lot of traditions. But at the same time, I am of an age where I can recognise what is right or wrong. I tell them from the first day I am only offering friendship. Most of them don’t accept – they want to take the relationship to a second level. But some of them say they need the same. I have made more than five friends this way. They are very very unique relationships. „My family don’t accept that kind of relationship because they don’t agree about relations between men and women. But they know me very well and they know that I will not do something bad. At the same time, I have to be careful about the traditions, about my religion… about everything.“

South America

Badoo may be on top here, but in each case it only just beat Tinder. In South America dating apps are particularly popular compared with other apps.

Deborah is 22 and lives in Sao Paulo. She works in film production, is single and uses Tinder and Happn. „I used to go to clubs, but it seems everyone goes for a single purpose – getting a girl or a guy. I don’t really like the feeling. It feels like you’re hunting or being hunted. In Brazil, some of the guys in clubs are really pushy. Sometimes, they try to kiss you even if you don’t want to. „It’s a lot smoother through the apps. Even if you’re shy, you can just swipe right on someone and start a conversation. „I don’t go out much, and I don’t even have to go out to find someone I like. Just be in the app for a few minutes and you can find someone to talk to at least.

„Before the apps, they used to have dating websites – people my age would never ever use them. Tinder and Happn made online dating more accessible and less embarrassing to younger people. You don’t have to be ashamed of it any more, because most of your friends use it.“

Africa

The lack of good mobile internet in many parts of Africa means the app market is still in its infancy here. Many people use social networks rather than dedicated dating platforms to meet partners. South Africa is the only African nation included in the world’s top 50 app markets.

John, whose name has been changed, is 32, and works in a beauty salon in Nairobi. He doesn’t want to use his real name because he could lose his job and his home if his boss and his landlord found out he was gay. He uses PlanetRomeo and Facebook to meet men, despite a bad experience on one meeting.“He took my clothes off, then I took his clothes off. Then after five minutes, two men came into the house. They started shouting, ‘You people, are you gay?'“They wanted me to pay 50,000 [Kenyan shillings], or they would call Mungiki [a violent criminal gang in Kenya], who would put tyres on me and set me on fire.“I thought, ‘Oh my God, oh my God. Today is my last day in the world.'“John managed to escape physically unharmed.

North America

Like Australia and the UK, Canada and the United States turn to Tinder to meet new people, while Mexico follows South America in its use of Badoo. Tinder is the 10th most popular lifestyle app in Canada and 15th in the United States.

Whitney, 24, lives in New York and works in marketing. She mainly uses Tinder and OKCupid. „In New York, there are eight million people. How the hell are you supposed to find someone? There’s so many people, so little time. So we use tools for everything. We have Uber; we even have a laundry app. Why wouldn’t we have a dating app? „I have girlfriends who are single who will take my phone away just so they can start swiping for me because it becomes a sort of addictive game that you do.“

„It’s crazy. You’ll just have guys who are like, ‘Do you wanna come over? Can I come over? Do you wanna meet up now? Are you down to do whatever?‘ Even if I was looking for a one night stand, not with you! Not with someone who completely bypasses etiquette.“

Notes and credits

For the world’s 50 biggest app markets (and two additional countries in Africa, Nigeria and Kenya), we identified the most downloaded dating app in the lifestyle and social categories of Apple’s App Store and Google Play Store for the whole of 2015. We defined a dating app as one that advertised itself as being for dating, or is primarily used for that purpose. For example, we did not count Facebook or Whatsapp, even though many people use them to meet new people.Interviews and research by Simon Maybin. Men from the USA get the most opportunities to meet new people since most members are Americans.

Besides the USA, it has a large audience in Europe (most are from the UK, France, Spain, and Germany) as well as in Australia.

This is a website dedicated to gay dating, specifically to homosexual men and most of them are in their twenties and thirties. Also, users have to be at least 18 years old to join.

Ease of use “mobile and desktop version”

When it comes to design, both mobile and website versions feature a super simple design. You do not need to be super tech-savvy to navigate through any of the versions.

The registration process is also pretty simple – there is only one form that needs to be filled.

After you complete the email verification, you can start browsing.

Even though the sign-up process is simple, the profiles are quite detailed. Besides general info, there is some additional information you can add later. These include tribes, hobbies, professions, etc.

GaysTryst uses an algorithm that most people are familiar with – it displays profiles of people near you and offers plenty of basic and unique features.

Cost

Among different gay hookup sites, GaysTryst is considered a pricier one.

By becoming a member, you are granted access to more search filters, messages, full-profile info, and some unique features.

Overall Rating

GaysTryst is on the list of best gay hookup sites for a reason – it has a great design, even better features and the process of joining is super simple.

The site would be even better if it featured a free mobile app. We gave it a score of 3.75/5.

Adam4Adam has more than 6 million users from US only, and all of them are very active.

As for the age range, most of the members are, surprisingly, over the age of 55. Still, there are a lot of younger people using Adam4Adam, especially those aged 25-35.

Overall Rating

Adam4Adam is a website for gay man, with most of the users being non-white, so it is perfect for all of those interested in multi-ethnical dating. It also has some super features like adult movies and sex shop. However, the app is still under development with a lot of the ads and features missing, so this is something that should be fixed in the near future.
