A Vinyl Box Set Of Marvin Gaye’s Most Cherished Work Is On The Way

Hard to imagine that it’s already been over 30 years since the curtain drew on the life of soul legend, Marvin Gaye. In the time since, we’ve come to learn just how seismic his impact on contemporary soul music has been, with modern-day geniuses like D’Angelo even claiming to be haunted by his falsetto whenever it comes through the radio dial.

But at the end of the day, it’s Marvin’s era-defining work that keeps him with us so many years after his tragic death and a new vinyl box set will ensure that you hear it in precisely the manner it was intended to be heard. On May 27th, Universal will release a mammoth 8xLP collection of Mavin’s work, aptly-titled, Marvin Gaye 1971 – 1981, compiling each of his solo records, with the exception of Midnight Love (released via Columbia in 1982,) into one proper 180 gram reissue treatment for you to have, hold and cherish for the rest of your days.

The collection includes, What’s Going On, Let’s Get It On, I Want You, his famed Trouble Man soundtrack, Here My Dear, In Our Lifetime and his collaborative Diana & Marvin LP. Pre-order your copy via Amazon today to get the humble brags started nice and early.

Marvin Gaye / 1971 – 1981 vinyl box

Universal Music will issue 1971 – 1981, a third and final vinyl box set featuring Marvin Gaye studio albums, in May this year. There is no official announcement as yet, but we are expecting this to contain the following six studio albums: What’s Going On (1971); Trouble Man (1972); Let’s Get It On (1973); I Want You (1976); Here, My Dear (1978); and In Our Lifetime (1981). Gaye’s last studio album Midnight Love (1982) was recorded for Columbia, so won’t be part of this collection of Motown albums.

So unless there is some bonus vinyl content, this should be a seven-LP vinyl box (Here, My Dear was a 2LP) with the usual 180g pressings and original packaging replicated.

This set is available to pre-order for £96 on Amazon UK, although Amazon Spain are doing it for around £78 which is decent. By contrast the Amazon US price of $200 seems very high! All of these prices are correct at the time of writing.

The 1971-1981 Marvin Gaye vinyl box will be issued on 27 May 2016.

Update 7 March: It appears that Diana & Marvin will also be included, so this will be an 8LP set. The UK price has also dropped in the last 24 hours.

[…] listing for the third Marvin Gaye vinyl box set have been confirmed. Volume Three 1971-1981 will, as predicted, contain What’s Going On; Trouble Man; Let’s Get It On; I Want You; Here, My Dear, In […]

Picked up Vols. 1 & 2 at a bargain price from Udiscover Store. I’ll probably hold off getting this to see if it’ll come down in price.

uDiscover Music Store have volume one @ £44.99 and volume two @ £49.99.

According to HMV in Japan, this will include “Marvin & Diana” and will be 7 LPs (but 8 pieces of vinyl).

The best period of Gaye’s career when he became his own man and not just a puppet of Motown. Down to £79.23 @ Amazon UK right now. Would not mind one of these sets myself; some truely classic material.

Depending on SQ, and with the exception of the two Blu-Ray audio discs that have already been released, perhaps HFPA will consider these others as well?

This looks well worth a look. the 40th anniversary vinyl/CD of What’s Going On is still a benchmark. Does anyone have the Volume 2 of this set? I’ve not got it and I’m curious what people’s thoughts on it are.

Vol 2 is well worth getting if you like the duets with Tammi Terrell and Kim Weston, which cover 4 of the albums.According to some sources Vol 3 will be 7 albums (8 LPs), including Diana and Marvin (the duet album with Ms Ross), as well as those posted in Paul’s blog.

Whatever happened to the Marvin Gaye: 1966 – 1970 CD box?

Will be worth holding off on this as I’ve picked up Vol 1 and Vol 2 vinyl boxsets for £45-£50 via Sound Of Vinyl. The quality of both these previous sets has been really good.

Vinyl Box Sets

On the heels of Volume One and Volume Two, Marvin Gaye Volume Three: 1971-1981 is a collection of his last seven Motown studio albums on 180-gram vinyl in one fantastic box!

The sounds of Marvin Gaye’s classic hits still travel through the fabric of R&B music.

His tone, sensual lyricism and address of societal woes, touches the soul and serve as poignant works that will set the mood or arouse your conscious. Commonly referred to as the „Prince of Soul,“ Marvin Gaye helped to shape the sound of Motown Records and was one of the greatest voices to emerge from the label.

On June 1, 1970, Gaye recorded his new composition „What’s Going On“ in Hitsville, U.S.A., inspired by an idea from Renaldo „Obie“ Benson of The Four Tops after he witnessed an act of police brutality at an anti-war rally in Berkeley. Released in 1971, it reached No. 1 on the R&B charts within a month, staying there for five weeks. The album became Marvin Gaye’s first million-selling album launching two more Top 10 singles „Mercy Mercy Me“ and „Inner City Blues.“ One of Motown’s first autonomous works, its theme and segue flow brought the concept album format to rhythm and blues.

In 1971, Gaye signed a $1 million dollar deal with Motown, making it the most lucrative deal by a black recording artist at the time. Marvin Gaye first responded to the new contract with the soundtrack and subsequent score, Trouble Man, released in late 1972.

This box set also includes the iconic Let’s Get It On, released on Aug. 28, 1973, which quickly became the biggest-selling recording of Marvin Gaye’s tenure with Motown. The album peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart and remained at the top of the Soul Albums chart for 11 weeks, making it the best-selling R&B album of 1973.

Marvin’s final duet project, Diana & Marvin, with Diana Ross, garnered international success despite contrasting artistic styles. The album I Want You followed in 1976 with the title track becoming a number-one R&B hit.

In 1978, Marvin Gaye issued Here, My Dear, inspired by the fallout of his first marriage to Anna Gordy.

Recorded as an intent for Gaye to remit a portion of its royalties to her to receive alimony payments, it initially flopped on the charts but turned into a cult album in later years. At the end of the ’70s Gaye conceived his next release to be a party record titled Love Man. The single „Ego Tripping Out“ failed to connect, and while relocated to Europe he reconceived the album as something more spiritual. The resulting In Our Lifetime was an LP that Gaye believed Motown had compromised with unauthorized edits and remixes, and retitled without the trailing question mark. It spelled the end of Gaye’s recording association with Motown.

Side D

Music On Vinyl proudly presents a special edition of the Marvin Gaye Collected album. This deluxe edition is released in celebration of what would have been Marvin Gaye’s 80th birthday on April 2 nd, 2019. The world lost one of the most important soul singers ever to grace the world on 1st April 1984. He has left behind a series of fantastic hits plus a handful of tracks which deserve the title of masterpiece, all Collected on this album.

Motown Records released the first Marvin Gaye record in 1961 „(I’m Afraid) The Masquerade Is Over“, a single intended for (radio) promotion from the singer’s debut album. This was followed up by the officially released „Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide“ a week later. Gaye scored his first real hit with „Stubborn Kind of Fellow“ in 1962, which he had co-written himself, joking about his alleged stubbornness. He found his own unique style with the single released at the end of the year: „Hitch Hike“. The foundations were now laid for an enormous series of chart successes: „Pride And Joy“, „Can I Get A Witness“, „How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)“ and „Ain’t That Peculiar“ are all Motown classics from 1963-1965 which are still being regularly played today after all these years. The duets he recorded with Kim Weston („It Takes Two“) and especially Tammi Terrell were certainly at least as good.

He scored his biggest ever hit with „I Heard It Through The Grapevine“ in 1968. „What’s Going On“ from the same-titled album became a number 1 hit in the USA and the album was received as a masterpiece everywhere and is now regarded as one of the most important records in pop history. In 1973, the artistically and commercially very successful, „Let’s Get It On“ album was mainly a musical ode to Marvin’s love for his new muse Janis Hunter. The success enjoyed by „Sexual Healing“ and the album which was released at the end of 1982, traveled with him. Suddenly Gaye, who had started to increasingly be forgotten about, was a celebrated star again and this was certainly a position the singer reveled in.

Marvin Gaye Collected is housed in a gatefold sleeve with special spot varnish and contains 2 printed innersleeves and 2 exclusive postcards.

The third and final part of Universal’s mammoth Marvin Gaye reissue campaign will conclude in May with the release of Marvin Gaye 1971 – 1981, a mooted 7xLP box set collecting six of Gaye’s final albums.

Among them are his seminal 1971 LP What’s Going On, 1973’s Let’s Get It On and I Want You from 1976, as well his soundtrack to 1972 blaxploitation film Trouble Man.

The set will be completed by Here, My Dear (1978) and In Our Lifetime (1981) with Gaye’s last recording Midnight Love (1982) missing as it was released on Columbia, not Motown’s Tamla subsidiary.

Expect 180gram vinyl and original artwork reproduced. Pre-order your copy here ahead of its release on 27th May. [via Super Deluxe Edition]
