Marvin Gaye

Marvin Gaye (April 2, 1939 – April 1, 1984), born Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr., was an American singer-songwriter and musician whose career spanned more than two decades. Born and raised in Washington, D.C., he was the son of a storefront minister of a local Pentecostal church sect and grew up singing gospel in church revivals as a young child. Gaye branched out into secular music as a teenager, joining the doo-wop group The Marquees, after returning from an honorable discharge from the United States Air Force, before the group was hired by Harvey Fuqua to be Harvey & The Moonglows. Following the band’s separation in 1960, Gaye began working as a session drummer for the Detroit music label, Anna, before signing with Motown Records in 1961, adding an „e“ to his surname.

30 Pieces of Wisdom from Marvin Gaye Lyrics

There are few more revered and iconic vocalists in music than Marvin Gaye.

Starting out as an in-house session player at Motown Records, he soon became a solo artist, bagging a string of hits and maturing as an artist and singer, most notably with his legendary What’s Going On record, which tackled themes of political, environmental and social disorder and is widely considered one of the greatest albums ever made.

To celebrate his legacy, Universal and Motown have embarked upon a series of reissues, chief amongst them a newly-released mighty seven-album 180g vinyl box set, Marvin Gaye 1961-1965, which contains the first seven records of his remarkable career. Click here to buy yours.

Meaning of “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)” by Marvin Gaye

by SMF · Published May 7, 2018 · Updated September 10, 2020

“Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)” is a song performed by the iconic American singer-songwriter Marvin Gaye. The lyrics of this song basically talk about the environment and how mankind is sadly destroying it. The song’s profound lyrics mention, among other things, the blue skies vanishing, oil spilling on the oceans and destroying aquatic life, radiation killing animals and the overcrowdedness of the earth. He concludes by asking how much more abuse can mother earth stand.

Gaye uses this song to lament on how the world has changed from the beautiful and safe place it used to be into something very sad.

About “Marvin Gaye”

Charlie Puth uses ‘Marvin Gaye’ as a euphemism for sex in this song, featuring his friend Meghan Trainor.

While performing the track at the 2015 American Music Awards, the two famously locked lips onstage sparking many relationship rumors.

What have the artists said about the song?

‘Marvin Gaye’ is the first record that I ever wrote in California, which is insane, because it did so well, and I never thought that would happen. I was honestly just fooling around thinking ‘okay, what’s a funny song I could make?’ And I was just like, ‘Let’s Marvin Gaye and get it on.’ And my friend was like, ‘That’s actually kinda tight, you should try and finish that.’ So it turned into a real song. And then I met Meghan Trainor at a party, and she wanted to sing on it, and she’s now my best friend and she’s featured on it.

About “Turn on Some Music”

“Turn On Some Music” is the fifth track on Marvin Gaye’s seventeenth and final studio album Midnight Love.

According to songwriter David Ritz, “the original version of „Turn On Some Music”, titled as “I’ve Got My Music”, included spiritual and autobiographical lyrics, that changed to sexually erotic ones.“ This can also be seen on tracks 8 and 9 of the deluxe bonus disc for the album, titled „The Sexual Healing Sessions”.

The album was released on October 1, 1982. The disc was certified triple platinum in the United States, selling well over six million copies worldwide. It was nominated for a 1983 Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, spawning the two-time Grammy Award-winning smash, “Sexual Healing”. It was ranked number 37 on the Rolling Stone list of the best albums of the 1980s decade and the NME named the album as its Album of the Year in 1983.

About “What’s Going On”

What’s Going On is an exquisite plea for peace on Earth, sung by a man at the height of crisis. In 1970, Marvin Gaye was Motown’s top male vocal star, yet he was frustrated by the assembly-line role he played on his own hits.- Rolling Stone’s Top 500 Songs

What have the artists said about the song?

Barry Gordy’s initial reaction to the song was “the worst thing I ever heard in my life”, and “that Dizzy Gillespie stuff in the middle, that scatting, it’s old” Robinson told Gordy – “ (it’s no use – ) like a bear shitting in the woods, Marvin ain’t budging”.

Marvin Gaye’s very compelling reason for wanting to record the song –

I am a 61 year old man from the Love Generation. To this day when I hear this song I often get emotional and my eyes still get wet. Mr. Marvin Gaye was a beautiful person. Peace Always, Melgwa

My choice for best song, best written song, & best produced song of the ’70s – and it came at the very beginning of the decade. Global warming was not even close to an issue. Scientists were convinced the next ice age was coming. P.S. in the article you stated “In 2003, the Rolling Stone’s placed What’s Going On…” It sounds like your referring to the band. Just remove ” the ” and the ” ‘s “. In 2003 Rolling Stone placed What’s Going On…

Which artists have covered “Mercy Mercy Me”?

Since its release in 1971, this song has been covered severally. One of the most notable covers of “Mercy Mercy Me” was by the late English singer Robert Palmer, who recorded in 1991 as a medley with another smash hit song from Gaye titled “I Want You”.  Palmer’s version was successful and peaked at number 9 in Palmer’s home country the United Kingdom.
