Adolf Hitler was GAY and loved teenage boys, CIA files claim

ADOLF Hitler was gay and had an appreciation for teenage boys, according to top secret CIA files penned to profile the Nazi leader.

Hitler had a „homosexual streak” and spent his youth in a hostel with a reputation as being where residents‘ „went in search men for homosexual pleasures”.

And this is despite the hypocritical ruthless dictator brutally persecuting homosexuals when he became leader of the Third Reich.

CIA-held files uncovered by Daily Star Online reveal the Fuhrer’s hidden sex life which was compiled in a 68-page personality profile in 1942.

Declassified files marked „top secret“ – compiled by the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), a forerunner of the 1947 founded CIA – were described as a „biographical sketch” of the Hitler for Washington.

The document was penned almost exactly one year after the US joined World War 2.

It described how Hitler „became familiar with young gigolos and old roues” during his time living in Vienna before World War One.

Hitler“s sexuality has been subject to debate for more than half a century as historians and biographers try to unravel the mysteries of the Nazi leader since his suicide at the end of World War 2.

He is known to have had a long term female lover Eva Braun, and is even rumored to have bedded his own niece Geli Raubal.

The evil dictator also ruthlessly persecuted homosexuals, sending as many as 15,000 to concentration camps and describing the community as „dangerous as the plague”.

And it looks like modern probes into Hitler“s homosexuality might be on to something, as US intelligence chiefs accepted the possibility during the height of WW2.

The OSS file was sent from Dr Henry Field, a top aide for US President Franklin D. Roosevelt, to Major John McDonough.

It carried the message: „Since I am partly responsible for the security involved. I must call attention to the special maintenance of secrecy.”

The file contains a full breakdown of Hitler“s personality, interests, physical fitness, diet, religion and his sexuality.

While acknowledging his relationships with women, and his desire for a partner „half mother, half sweetheart”, it goes into detail about Hitler“s homosexual tendencies.

It reads: „Information reaching me from time to time compelled me to regard Hitler as a sadomasochistic type of man with possibly even a homosexual streak in him.”

Hitler also had a sexual attraction to his fellow Nazi leader Rudolf Hess, his deputy Fuhrer, who was captured in 1941.

Hess is described by the documents as being known as „Fraeulein Anna” by other party members for his habit of attending balls dressed as a woman.

„During [Hitler“s imprisonment] this period of isolation and sexual privation an affinity with Hess began to crystallize which to my mind might have possibly bordered on the sexual,” the document reads.

Hitler is described in the documents with an „aesthetic” appreciation for „adolescent boys”.

It is also noted the document doesn“t believe Hitler engaged in homosexual relationships while living in Vienna.

He was however prone to „occasional hysterical outbursts of a sadomasochistic nature” linked to sexual frustration.

OSS files also detailed Hitler“s unsuccessful attempts with the opposite sex, and his conversations with confident Ernst Hanfstaengl in which he laid out his anger with women.

In the document“s „analysis” section, it read: „His sex life is dual as is his political outlook.

„He is both homosexual and heterosexual; both socialist and fervent nationalist; both man and woman.

„While the true Adolf Hitler is elusive to the diagnostician, there are certain facts which prove that his sexual situation is untenable and even desperate.

„There seem to be psychic if not also physical obstacles which make real and complete sexual fulfillment ever impossible.”

Hitler was gay – and killed to hide it, book says

Adolf Hitler was gay – or so says a sensational new biography on the Nazi dictator due to be published tomorrow.

Eyewitness accounts from Hitler’s former lovers, and historical documents that for the first time illuminate rumours that have circulated for over half a century, are disclosed in Hitler’s Secret: The Double Life of a Dictator .

The respected German historian Lothar Machtan even claims in his book that Hitler ordered the deaths of several high-ranking Nazis to prevent the secret of his homosexuality from surfacing.

Ernst Röhm, the leader of Hitler’s Sturm Abteilung or Storm Troopers, tried to blackmail Hitler by threatening to reveal his sexuality. Röhm, who was also gay, was murdered as a result, according to Machtan, a history teacher at Bremen University.

He refers to scores of historical documents to support his thesis. In 1915, the young Hitler was a dispatch rider at the front in France. Years later, yet before Hitler became infamous, one of his fellow soldiers, Hans Mend, wrote in his memoirs: ‚At night, Hitler lay with Schmidl, his male whore.‘ Schmidl, otherwise known as Ernst Schmidt, and Hitler were ‚inseparable lovers‘ for five years, according to Machtan.

Hitler’s service notes read that as a result of the love affair there was reluctance among senior officers to promote him. According to Erich Ebermeier, a lawyer and writer who viewed Hitler’s military files years later: ‚Despite his bravery towards the enemy, because of his homosexual activity he lost out on a promotion to non-commissioned officer.‘

Police reports from Munich after the First World War also suggest that Hitler was pursued by police because of his sexual orientation. ‚As a „brown“ [fascist] activist, Hitler managed to lure many young men to his side, but not only for political reasons,‘ says Machtan.

According to a Munich police protocol from the early part of the 20th century, a 22-year-old man called Joseph told the police: ‚I spent the whole night with him.‘ Another, Michael, who was 18, told them: ‚I had been unemployed for months, and my mother and my brother were always hungry, so, at his request, I accompanied the man to his home.‘ Another, a boy called Franz, said: ‚He asked me if I’d like to stay with him and he told me his name was Adolf Hitler.‘

The police reports were collected by Otto von Lossow, a German army general who took part in suppressing the Hitler putsch in 1923. He kept the Munich police file for years, as, he described it, ‚a form of personal life insurance‘. If Hitler had attempted to push him aside, he would have blackmailed him with the information, he said. The police documents were published some years ago in Rome by Eugen Dollmann, a close friend of Heinrich Himmler’s and also Hitler’s interpreter. But because his book never appeared in German, the startling information remained largely overlooked by historians.

Machtan says that Hitler was particularly drawn to Rudolf Hess, his deputy, who was known in party circles as ‚black Emma‘ and with whom he had spent months in Landsberg prison.

Why, then, did the Nazis persecute homosexuals, sending hundreds of thousands of them to their deaths in labour camps and the gas chambers?

‚Hitler himself never condemned homosexuality, but he allowed the persecution of gays in order to disguise his own true colours,‘ Machtan says.

New Evidence from His Doctors Shows Hitler Was Gay

There is new evidence that Adolph Hitler was gay. Doctors who treated Hitler were interviewed by the U.S. Army after World War II, and the notes from those interviews have now been made public.

Army interrogator Herman Merl, who was a medical technician who interviewed Hitler’s doctors, Karl Brandt and Hitler’s primary physician, Theodor Morell, wrote “Homosex” in the space provided for Hitler’s sexuality. The doctors told Merl that Hitler did not sleep with girlfriend Eva Braun in her bedroom, and he himself received female hormones. Merl wrote, “Eva Braun = separate rooms” and “female hormone – injection 50,000 units.” He added, “His sexual life and intercourse with Eva Braun was told to me.”

Merl wrote that Hitler was “hysterical,” a “megalomaniac,” and might have had Parkinson’s disease.

The notebooks Merl kept will be sold by Alexander Historical Auctions of Chesapeake City, Md. in late May. Alexander has previously sold notes regarding Hitler that revealed he was also injected with bull semen for testosterone.

New Evidence from His Doctors Shows Hitler Was Gay

Nazi doctors: Hitler was gay, took female hormones

Newly discovered notes from a U.S. Army interview of former Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler doctors reveal that the madman had homosexual tendencies, did not sleep in girlfriend Eva Braun’s bedroom, and was doped up with multiple drugs including female hormones.

Written in erratic shorthand, Army interrogator Herman Merl, a Vienna-born medical technician enlisted to interview Hitler’s doctors, Karl Brandt and Theodor Morell, scribbled „Homosex“ in his notebook where he sized up the mass murderer’s sexuality.

He then wrote: „Eva Braun = separate rooms“ before adding „female hormone – injection 50,000 units.“ Elsewhere he wrote, „His sexual life and intercourse with Eva Braun was told to me.“

The notebooks are going up for auction later this month at one of the nation’s leading sellers of historical artifacts, Alexander Historical Auctions of Chesapeake City, Md. Alexander has offered other important Third Reich relics, including a tea set from Hitler’s mountain hideaway and Josef Mengele’s diaries. Often the items are sold to Jewish collectors and museums.

Merl’s notes further confirm other post-war interviews with Hitler’s caretakers that he was „hysterical,“ a „megalomaniac,“ and suffered from several ailments, notably flatulence for which he took drugs to stop passing gas. He also suggested that Hitler had Parkinson’s disease.

A previous Alexander auction included notes detailing how Hitler was shot up with bull semen. The new notes add that bull semen shots were used to regulate his level of testosterone. But proving that his doctors used many experimental treatments on Hitler was Merl’s mention that the fuhrer was also receiving female hormones. Those can be used to treat various ailments, but are dangerous and often interfere with male sexual functions.

Alexander President Bill Panagopulos told Secrets that there are five notebooks for sale and he expects the sale price to be $5,000-$7,000. He noted that Dr. Morell was Hitler’s primary physician and a rival of Dr. Brandt, an SS officer who also headed the Nazi euthanasia program.

Was Adolf Hitler Gay? Maybe, Says New Evidence, But Does It Matter?

A recent article discussed notes from interviews with Adolf Hitler’s doctors conducted by the U.S. Army after World War II. These notes were recently released to the public and Hitler’s physicians disclosed the following:

„[The doctors] wrote ‚Homosex‘ in the space provided for Hitler’s sexuality. The doctors told [the interviewer] that Hitler did not sleep with girlfriend Eva Braun in her bedroom, and he himself received female hormones. [The interviewer] wrote, ‚Eva Braun = separate rooms‘ and ‚female hormone – injection 50,000 units.'“

Other notes „[detailed] how Hitler was shot up with bull semen … [saying] that bull semen shots were used to regulate his level of testosterone. But … [Hitler] was also receiving female hormones. Those can be used to treat various ailments, but are dangerous and often interfere with male sexual functions.“

When I read these notes about Hitler, I kept thinking over and over again, „Why does any of this matter?“ Honestly, does Hitler being gay really even matter at this point? If we found out that he really enjoyed eating raspberries, would that matter as well? However, I think his sexual orientation is in question mainly because being gay, lesbian, transsexual, transgendered, queer, or any other form of sexual „deviance,“ is controversial and often stigmatized in today’s world.

It wouldn’t surprise me if some people start believing that his cruel and inhuman actions were caused by his sexuality. And I don’t know if there is a political agenda underlying these articles claiming that Hitler was gay. But regardless of intentions of writers, it is important for us to understand that anyone can commit horrible acts. Were Hitler’s SchutzStaffel and Nazi soldiers all gay too? Were the 1500s-1800s white male slave owners, who raped and assaulted their black female slaves, gay? Were the fighters for The Crusades, who slaughtered countless people, gay? People of all backgrounds, genders, ages, and sexual orientation commit crimes against humanity. Therefore, we shouldn’t assume that Hitler’s sexuality played any role in his actions.

It is also unclear if Hitler was really gay or some other form of queer. Even if his doctors claimed he was „Homosex,“ injecting female hormones is often not typically practiced by homosexuals. Rather it is actually more common for transgendered people to use hormone injections. This already points to how the writers who say „Hitler was gay“ are putting their own spin on the actual facts.

What actually makes this story interesting is the fact that we’re learning about this now. It’s been 68 years since Hitler’s death. However, signs of his sexuality are just recently starting to become public knowledge. If he really was gay or transgendered, the silence of his sexual orientation is very telling of societal stigma against queers. Hitler was extremely powerful and influential (as cruel as he was) yet even he possibly had to hide his sexual orientation from the public.

This all goes to show how hatred towards certain identities can cause immense fear and insecurity even among those with great amounts of power. Thus, it is up to us to create a more accepting society for all people.

„Harald Hitler“: Gay-Model, Hass-Autor, Laien-Schauspieler

Nazi Germany and homosexuality

Moral decline prior to Nazi Germanywhich spawned an increase in the acceptance of homosexuality in German society, occurred about 35 years before the Nazis took power and it paved the way for the Nazis to take power. A large part of the increase of support for homosexuality beforehand, including Germany becoming the birthplace of the so-called „Gay Rights“ movement, originated with a particular man, Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, who had been molested by his riding instructor at age 14 and attributed his homosexuality to a „third sex“ instead of his molestation. [1] The Nazis were rabid evolutionists who insisted that the „German master race“ should dominate other so-called inferior races. Belief in evolution[2]

The American journalist H. R. Knickerbocker wrote about the homosexual Nazi leader Ernst Röhm: Röhm’s „chiefs, men of the rank of Gruppenfuehrer or Obergruppenfuehrer, commanding units of several hundred thousand Storm Troopers, were almost without exception homosexuals. Indeed, unless a Storm Troop officer were homosexual, he had no chance of advancement.“ [3]

Ernst Röhm was the only Nazi leader to address Hitler by his first name „Adolf“ rather than „mein Führer“ which helped prompt rumors that Hitler was a homosexual. The historian Lothar Machtan and others have uncovered historical evidence that suggest Adolf Hitler may have been a homosexual. [4] However, the sexuality of Hitler is a matter of scholarly debate and historians are divided on whether Hitler was homosexual, bisexual, heterosexual or asexual.[5]

Later when Adolf Hitler came into power, he chose to persecute homosexuals in order to advance his notions of racial struggle. [6] Yet at the same time, Hitler retained some sexual deviants in positions of power within the Nazi leadership. For example, Hermann Goering was known to dress in drag, paint his nails and put rouge on his cheeks. Another example is the case of Max Bielas who „had a harem of little Jewish boys. He liked them young, no older than seventeen. He had a kind of parody of the shepherds of Arcadia, their role was to take care of the camp flock of geese. They were dressed like little had a little barracks built for them that looked like a doll’s sought in Treblinka only the satisfaction of his homosexual instincts (Steiner:117f).“[7]

Homosexuality was supported in Nazi Germany, although modern gay rights activists claim that an estimated 100,000 homosexual men were arrested for this crime, of whom approximately 5,000 to 15,000 were interned in concentration camps. [8] See Homosexuals and the Holocaust for further details.

Paragraph 175 banned homosexuality long before Hitler was even born. As The Pink Swastika by Scott Lively and Kevin Abrams pointed out, 85% of Nazi homosexuals were of the Butches faction while the other 15% were of the Femmes faction, and as the Butches persecuted the Femmes, today’s LGBT movement is not monolithic either as they claim that drag queens offend the transgender.

Yet, according to some historians, homosexual men constituted the core of the Nazi Party in Germany. [9] In contrast to the wimpy „swish“ homosexual, Nazi homosexuals were ultra-macho or „butch“.

The OSS addressed the reason why so many homosexuals found the Nazi party inviting,

In 1941 the Office of Strategic Services prepared Langer attributed the belief of many that Hitler was homosexual „(a) from the fact that he does show so many feminine characteristics, and (b) from the fact that there were so many homosexuals in the Party during the early days and many continue to occupy important positions.“ Langer added, „It does seem that Hitler feels much more at ease with homosexuals.“

Some parts of the American Nazi movement are explicitly homosexual. The National Socialist League, a group that existed from the mid to late seventies, restricted its membership to homosexual Nazis. [11]

Scott Lively [12] wrote:

Largely because of the Frankfurt SchoolTheodor Adorno and Herbert Marcuse, redefining fascism and Nazism as being right wing and manipulating the American Jewish Committee as such, the Nazis being largely composed of sexual deviants and bohemians, including homosexuals, was often ignored in academic circles and various leftist groups, and many times the Nazis were falsely assumed to be sexually rigid and puritanical in their sexual relationships. Hitler spent time at a gay hostel in Vienna and was both ‘homosexual and heterosexual’ with a ‘sadomasochistic nature’, 1943 US intelligence report claims

Published: 07:20 EDT, 9 October 2018 | Updated: 08:36 EDT, 9 October 2018

Adolf Hitler had a ‚homosexual streak‘ and spent several years living in a gay hostel in Austria, according to a CIA profile on the Nazi leader written during World War II.

The 1943 intelligence report was compiled for then-president Franklin D. Roosevelt, and states that Hitler was ‚both homosexual and heterosexual‘.

The 70-page report also claims Adolf Hitler was ’sexually attracted‘ to his deputy Fuhrer, Rudolf Hess, who – it says – was a known transvestite.

Claims: A 1943 report compiled by U.S. intelligence claims Nazi leader Adolf Hitler was ‚both homosexual and heterosexual‘

The report was collated by anthropologist Henry Field, a hand-picked member of the White House’s special intelligence unit tasked with trawling through any information he could find about German top brass, including Hitler himself.

The resulting ‚biographical sketch‘ of Hitler, covering everything from his childhood and education to diet, favourite music and ’speech-making technique‘.

It also includes an analysis of Hitler’s sexuality and touches on his time in Austria as a struggling painter in his early 20s.

It has long been known that Hitler lived at a men’s hostel on Meldemannstrasse in Birgittenau, Vienna from 1910 to 1913.

At the time he was unemployed and trying to make it as an artist, and only left the hostel to move to Germany after receiving his father’s inheritance.

‚Gay hostel‘: It has long been known that Hitler spent three years at this men’s hostel in Birgittenau, Vienna in his early 20s, which according to the file had ‚a reputation of being a place where elderly men went in search of young men for homosexual pleasures‘

The Office of Strategic Services files, a predecessor of the modern CIA, then claims the hostel had ‚the reputation of being a place where elderly men went in search of young men for homosexual pleasures‘.

The information about Hitler’s sexuality was provided by a Ernst Sedgwick Hanfstaengl, a German-American who had been a close friend and confidant of Hitler’s during the 1920s and 30s.

He eventually fell out of favour with Hitler and the Nazi leadership, and fled to Britain after which he defected to the U.S. and began working for President Roosevelt providing information on hundreds of the Nazi top brass.

‚Fraulein Anna‘: According to the file, Hitler was attracted to his deputy Rudolf Hess

The report claims that Hitler’s ‚affinity‘ for his eventual Deputy Fuhrer Hess had grown stronger and ‚might have possibly bordered on the sexual‘ after they were imprisoned together in the 1920s.

According to the report this belief was strengthened upon learning that ‚Hess’s nickname among homosexual members of the party was „Fraeulein Anna“ and that it was notorious that he had attended balls dressed in female attire‘.

Hitler is then described as a ’sado-masochistic type of man with possibly even a homosexual streak in him.‘

Concluding the chapter on Hitler’s sexuality, Field writes: ‚His sex life is dual as is his political outlook.

‚He is both’homosexual end hetero-sexual; both Socialist and fervent Nationalist; both man and woman.

‚While the true Adolf Hitler is elusive to the diagnostician, there are certain facts which prove that his sexual situation is untenable and even desperate.‘

Was Hitler secretly gay?

This one’s controversial – as various rumours have been spread by anti-gay activists that Hitler and his fellow Nazis were all gay.

Several books, such as The Pink Swastika and The Hidden Hitler have stated these gay rumours.

by James Steakley

“After roll call on the evening of June 20, 1942, an order was suddenly given: ‚All prisoners with the pink triangle will remain standing at attention!‘ We stood on the desolate, broad square, and from somewhere a warm summer breeze carried the sweet fragrance of resin and wood from the regions of freedom; but we couldn’t taste it, because our throats were hot and dry from fear. Then the guardhouse door of the command tower opened, and an SS officer and some of his lackeys strode toward us. Our detail commander barked: ‚Three hundred criminal deviants, present as ordered!” We were registered, and then it was revealed to us that in accordance with an order from the Reichsfuhrung SS, our category was to be isolated in an intensified-penalty company, and we would be transferred as a unit to the Klinker Brickworks the next morning. The Klinker factory! We shuddered, for the human death mill was more than feared.”

Appallingly little information is available on the situation of homosexuals in Nazi Germany. Many historians have hinted darkly at the “unspeakable practices” of a Nazi elite supposedly overrun with “sexual perverts,” but this charge is both unsubstantiated and insidious. Upon closer examination, it turns out to be no more than the standard use of antigay prejudice to defame any given individual or group a practice, incidentally, of which the Nazis were the supreme masters. The Nazis were guilty of very real offences, but their unspeakable practices were crimes against mankind.

That homosexuals were major victims of these crimes is mentioned in only a few of the standard histories of the period. And those historians who do mention the facts seem reluctant to dwell on the subject and turn quickly to the fate of other minorities in Nazi Germany. Yet tens, perhaps hundreds of thousands of homosexuals were interned in Nazi concentration camps. They were consigned to the lowest position in the camp hierarchy, and subjected to abuse by both guards and fellow prisoners; most of them perished.

The words at the beginning of this article were written by one concentration camp survivor, LD Classen von Neudegg, who published some of his recollections in a German homophile magazine in the Fifties. Here are a few more excerpts from his account of the treatment of homosexuals in the concentration camp at Sachsenhausen:

“We had been here for almost two months, but it seemed like endless years to us. When we were ‚transferred‘ here, we had numbered around three hundred men. Whips were used more frequently each morning, when we were forced down into the clay pits under the wailing of the camp sirens. ‚Only fifty are sill alive,‘ whispered the man next to me. ‚Stay in the middle -then you won’t get hit so much.‘

“…(The escapees) had been brought back. ‚Homo‘ was scrawled scornfully across their clothing for their last walk through the camp. To increase their thirst, they were forced to eat oversalted food, and then they were placed on the block and whipped. Afterwards, drums were hung around their necks, which they had to beat while shouting, ‚Hurrah, we’re back!‘ The three men were hanged.

“.., 1944. One morning there was an eruption of restlessness among the patients of the hospital barracks where I worked. Fear and uncertainty had arisen from rumours about new measures on the part of the SS hospital administration. At the administrator’s order, the courier of the political division had requisitioned certain medical records, and now he arrived at the camp for delivery. Fever charts shot up; the sick were seized with a gnawing fear. After a few days, the awful mystery of the records was solved. Experiments had been ordered involving living subjects and phosphorus: methods of treating phosphorus burns were to be developed and tested. I must be silent about the effects of this series of experiments, which proceeded with unspeakable pain, fear, blood and tears: for it is impossible to put the misery into words.”

Dr. Neudegg’s recollections are confirmed in many details by the memoirs of Rudolf Hoss, adjunct and commander of the concentration camps at Sachsenhausen and, later, Auschwitz. Neudegg’s account is something of a rarity: the few homosexuals who managed to survive internment have tended to hide the fact, largely because homosexuality continued to be a crime in postwar West Germany. This is also the reason why homosexuals have been denied any compensation by the otherwise munificent West German government.

The number of homosexuals who died in Nazi concentration camps is unknown and likely to remain so. Although statistics are available on the number of men brought to trial on charges of “lewd and unnatural behaviour,” many more were sent to camps without the benefit of a trial. Moreover, many homosexuals were summarily executed by firing squads; this was particularly the case with gays in the military which encompassed nearly every able-bodied man during the final years of the war. Finally, many concentration camps systematically destroyed all their records when it became apparent that German defeat was imminent.

The beginning of the Nazi terror against homosexuals was marked by the murder of Ernst Rohm on June 30, 1934: „the Night of the Long Knives. „Rohm was the man who, in 1919, first made Hitler aware of his own political potential, and the two were close friends for fifteen years. During that time, Rohm rose to SA Chief of Staff, transforming the Brownshirt militia from a handful of hardened goons and embittered ex-soldiers into an effective fighting force five hundred thousand strong the instrument of Nazi terror. Hitler needed Rohm’s military skill and could rely on his personal loyalty, but he was ultimately a pragmatist. As part of a compromise with the (regular army) leadership, whose support he needed to become Fuhrer, Hitler allowed Goering and Himmler to murder Rohm along with dozens of Rohm’s loyal officers.

For public relations purposes, and especially to quell the outrage felt throughout the ranks of the SA, Hitler justified his blatant power play by pointing to Rohm’s homosexuality. Hitler, of course, had known of Rohm’s homosexuality since 1919, and it became public knowledge in 1925, when Rohm appeared in court to charge a hustler with theft. All this while the Nazi Party had a virulently antigay policy, and many Nazis protested that Rohm was discrediting the entire Party and should be purged. Hitler, however, was quite willing to cover up for him for years until he stood in the way of larger plans.

The Nazi Party came to power in 1933, and a year later Rohm was dead. While Rohm and his men were being rounded up for the massacre (offered a gun and the opportunity to shoot himself, Rohm retorted angrily: “Let Hitler do his own dirty work”), the new Chief of Staff received his first order from the Fuhrer: “I expect all SA leaders to help preserve and strengthen the SA in its capacity as a pure and cleanly institution. In particular, I should like every mother to be able to allow her son to join the SA, Party, and Hitler Youth without fear that he may become morally corrupted in their ranks. I therefore request all SA commanders to take the utmost pains to ensure that offences under Paragraph 175 are met by immediate expulsion of the culprit from the SA and the Party.”

Hitler had good reason to be concerned about the reputation of Nazi organizations, most of which were based on strict segregation of the sexes. Hitler Youth, for example, was disparagingly referred to as Homo Youth throughout the Third Reich, a characterization which the Nazi leadership vainly struggled to eliminate. Indeed, most of the handful of publications on homosexuality which appeared during the Fascist regime were devoted to new and rather bizarre methods of “detection” and “prevention.”

Rudolf Diels, the founder of the Gestapo, recorded some of Hitler’s personal thoughts on the subject: “He lectured me on the role of homosexuality in history and politics. It had destroyed ancient Greece, he said. Once rife, it extended its contagious effects like an ineluctable law of nature to the best and most manly of characters, eliminating from the reproductive process precisely those men on whose offspring a nation depended. The immediate result of the vice was, however, that unnatural passion swiftly became dominant in public affairs if it were allowed to spread unchecked.”

The tone had been set by the Rohm putsch, and on its first anniversary-June 28, 1935, the campaign against homosexuality was escalated by the introduction of the “Law for the Protection of German Blood and German Honour.” Until 1935, the only punishable offence had been anal intercourse; under the new Paragraph 175a, ten possible “acts” were punishable, including a kiss, an embrace, even homosexual fantasies! One man, for instance, was successfully prosecuted on the grounds that he had observed a couple making love in a park and watched only the man.

Under the Nazi system, criminal acts were less important in determining guilt than criminal intent. The “phenomenological” theory of justice claimed to evaluate a person’s character rather than his deeds. The “healthy sensibility of the people” () was elevated to the highest normative legal concept, and the Nazis were in a position to prosecute an individual solely on the grounds of his sexual orientation. (After World War II, incidentally, this law was immediately struck from the books in East Germany as a product of Fascist thinking, while it remained on the books in West Germany.)

Once Paragraph 175a was in effect, the annual number of convictions on charges of homosexuality leaped to about ten times the number in the pre-Nazi period. The law was so loosely formulated that it could be and was applied against heterosexuals whom the Nazis wanted to eliminate. The most notorious example of an individual convicted on trumped-up charges was General Werner von Fritsch, Army Chief of Staff; and the law was also used repeatedly against members of the Catholic clergy. But the law was undoubtedly used primarily against gay people, and the court system was aided in the witch-hunt by the entire German populace, which was encouraged to scrutinize the behaviour of neighbours and to denounce suspects to the Gestapo. The number of men convicted of homosexuality during the Nazi period totaled around fifty thousand:

The Gestapo was the agent of the next escalation of the campaign against homosexuality. Ex-chicken farmer Heinrich Himmler, Reichsfuhrer SS and head of the Gestapo, richly deserves a reputation as the most fanatically homophobic member of the Nazi leadership. In 1936, he gave a speech on the subject of homosexuality and described the murder of Ernst Rohm (which he had engineered) in these terms: “Two years it became necessary, we did not scruple to strike this plague with death, even within our own ranks.” Himmler closed with these words: “Just as we today have gone back to the ancient Germanic view on the question of marriage mixing different races, so too in our judgment of homosexuality a symptom of degeneracy which could destroy our race we must return to the guiding Nordic principle: extermination of degenerates.”

A few months earlier, Himmler had prepared for action by reorganizing the entire state police into three divisions. The political executive, Division II, was directly responsible for the control of “illegal parties and organizations, leagues and economic groups, reactionaries and the Church, freemasonry, and homosexuality.”

Himmler personally favoured the immediate “extermination of degenerates,” but he was empowered to order the summary execution only of homosexuals discovered within his own bureaucratic domain. Civilian offenders were merely required to serve out their prison sentences (although second offenders were subject to castration).

In 1936, Himmler found a way around this obstacle. Following release from prison, all “enemies of the state”-including homosexuals-were to be taken into protective custody and detained indefinitely. “Protective custody” () was an euphemism for concentration camp internment. Himmler gave special orders that homosexuals be placed in Level Three camps-the human death mills described by Neudegg. These camps were reserved for Jews and homosexuals.

The official SS newspaper, , announced in 1937 that there were two million German homosexuals and called for their death. The extent to which Himmler succeeded in this undertaking is unknown, but the number of homosexuals sent to camps was far in excess of the fifty thousand who served jail sentences. The Gestapo dispatched thousands to camps without a trial. Moreover, “protective custody” was enforced retroactively, so that any gay who had ever come to the attention of the police prior to the Third Reich was subject to immediate arrest. (The Berlin police alone had an index of more than twenty thousand homosexuals prior to the Nazi takeover.) And starting in 1939, gays from Nazi-occupied countries were also interned in German camps.

The chances for survival in a Level Three camp were low indeed. Homosexuals were distinguished from other prisoners by a pink triangle, worn on the left side of the jacket and on the right pant leg. There was no possibility of “passing” for straight, and the presence of “marked men” in the all-male camp population evoked the same reaction as in contemporary prisons: gays were brutally assaulted and sexually abused.

“During the first weeks of my imprisonment,” wrote one survivor, “I often thought I was the only available target on whom everyone was free to vent his aggressions. Things improved when I was assigned to a labour detail that worked outside the camp at Metz, because everything took place in public view. I was made clerk of the labour detail, which meant that I worked all day and then looked after the records at the guardhouse between midnight and 2 am. Because of this ‚overtime‘ I was allowed seconds at lunch if any food was left over. This is the fact to which I probably owe my survival…I saw quite a number of pink triangles. I don’t know how they were eventually day they were simply gone.”

Concentration camp internment served a twofold purpose: the labour power of prisoners boosted the national economy significantly, and undesirables could be effectively liquidated by the simple expedient of reducing their food rations to a level slightly below subsistence. One survivor tells of witnessing “Project Pink” in his camp: “The homosexuals were grouped into liquidation commandos and placed under triple camp discipline. That meant less food, more work, stricter supervision. If a prisoner with a pink triangle became sick, it spelled his doom. Admission to the clinic was forbidden.”

This was the practice in the concentration camps at Sachsenhausen, Natzweler, Fuhlsbuttel, Neusustrum, Sonnenburg, Dachau, Lichtenberg, Mauthausen, Ravensbruck, Neuengamme, Grossrosen, Buchenwald, Vught, Flossenburg, Stutthof, Auschwitz, and Struthof; as well, lesbians wore pink triangles in the concentration camps at Butzow and Ravensbruck. In the final months of the war, the men with pink triangles received brief military training. They were to be sent out as cannon fodder in the last-ditch defense of the fatherland.

But the death of other pink triangles came much more swiftly. A survivor gives this account: “He was a young and healthy man. The first evening roll call after he was added to our penal company was his last. When he arrived, he was seized and ridiculed, then beaten and kicked, and finally spat upon. He suffered alone and in silence. Then they put him under a cold shower. It was a frosty winter evening, and he stood outside the barracks all through that long, bitterly cold night. When morning came, his breathing had become an audible rattle. Bronchial pneumonia was later given as the cause of his death. But before things had come to that, he was again beaten and kicked. Then he was tied to a post and placed under an arc lamp until he began to sweat, again put under a cold shower, and so on. He died toward evening.”

Another survivor: “One should not forget that these men were honourable citizens, very often highly intelligent, and some had once held high positions in civil and social life. During his sevenyear imprisonment, this writer became acquainted with a Prussian prince, famous athletes, professors, teachers, engineers, artisans, trade workers and, of course, hustlers. Not all of them were what one might term “respectable” people, to be sure, but the majority of them were helpless and completely lost in the world of the concentration camps. They lived in total isolation in whatever little bit of freedom they could find. I witnessed the tragedy of a highly cultured attache of a foreign embassy, who simply couldn’t grasp the reality of the tragedies taking place all around him. Finally, in a state of deep desperation and hopelessness, he simply fell over dead for no apparent reason. I saw a rather effeminate young man who was repeatedly forced to dance in front of SS men, who would then put him on the rack-chained hand and foot to a crossbeam in the guardhouse barracks and beat him in the most awful way. Even today I find it impossible to think back on all my comrades, all the barbarities, all the tortures, without falling into the deepest depression. I hope you will understand.”

The ruthlessness of the Nazis culminated in actions so perversely vindictive as to be almost incomprehensible. Six youths arrested for stealing coal at a railroad station were taken into protective custody and duly placed in a concentration camp. Shocked that such innocent boys were forced to sleep in a barracks also occupied by pink triangles, the SS guards chose what to them must have seemed the lesser of two evils: they took the youths aside and gave them fatal injections of morphine. Morality was saved.

The self-righteousness that prompted this type of action cuts through the entire ideology glorifying racial purity and extermination of degenerates to reveal stark fear of homosexuality. Something of this fear is echoed in the statement by Hitler cited above, which is quite different in tone from the propagandistic cant of Himmler’sexhortations. Himmler saw homosexuals as congenital cowards and weaklings. Probably as a result of his friendship with Rohm, Hitler could at least imagine “the best and most manly of characters” being homosexual.

Hitler ordered all the gay bars in Berlin closed as soon as he came to power. But when the Olympics were held in that city in 1936, he temporarily rescinded the order and allowed several bars to reopen: foreign guests were not to receive the impression that Berlin was a “sad city.”

Despite, and perhaps because of, their relentless emphasis upon strength, purity, cleanliness and masculinity, the all-male Nazi groups surely contained a strong element of deeply repressed homoeroticism. The degree of repression was evidenced by the Nazi reaction to those who were openly gay. In the Bible, the scapegoat was the sacrificial animal on whose head the inchoate guilt of the entire community was placed. Homosexuals served precisely this function in the Third Reich.

The ideological rationale for the mass murder of homosexuals during the Third Reich was quite another matter. According to the doctrine of Social Darwinism, only the fittest are meant to survive, and the law of the jungle is the final arbiter of human history. If the Germans were destined to become the master race by virtue of their inherent biological superiority, the breeding stock could only be improved by the removal of degenerates. Retarded, deformed and homosexual individuals could be eliminated with the dispassionate conscientiousness of a gardener pulling weeds. (Indeed, it is the very vehemence and passion with which homosexuals were persecuted that compels us to look beyond the pseudoscientific rationale for a deeper, psychological dynamic.)

The institutionalized homophobia of the Third Reich must also be seen in terms of the sexual revolution that had taken place in Germany during the preceding decades. The German gay movement had existed for thirtysix years before it (and all other progressive forces) was smashed. The Nazis carried out a “conservative revolution” which restored law and order together with nineteenth-century sexism. A system of ranking women according to the number of their offspring was devised by Minister of the Interior Wilhelm Frick, who demanded that homosexuals “be hunted down mercilessly, for their vice can only lead to the demise of the German people.”

Ironically, the biologistic arguments against gay people could be supported by the theories advanced by the early gay movement itself. Magnus Hirschfeld and the members of the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee had made “the Third Sex” a household term in Germany; but the rigidly heterosexual society of the Third Reich had no patience with “intersexual variants” and turned a deaf ear to pleas for tolerance. The prominent Nazi jurist Dr. Rudolf Klare wrote: “Since the Masonic notion of humanitarianism arose from the ecclesiastical/Christian feeling of charity, it is sharply opposed to our National Socialist worldview and is eliminated a priori as a justification for not penalizing homosexuality.”

Paragraph 175 of the criminal code, German homosexual-rights activists became worldwide leaders in efforts to reform societal attitudes that condemned homosexuality. Many in Germany regarded the Weimar Republic’s toleration of homosexuals as a sign of Germany’s decadence. Nazi leaders posed as moral crusaders who wanted to stamp out the „vice“ of homosexuality from Germany in order to help win the racial struggle. Once they took power in 1933, Nazi officials intensified persecution of German male homosexuals. Persecution ranged from the dissolution of homosexual organizations to internment in concentration camps.

Gay men were targeted for persecution because they did not contribute to the desired growth of the ‚Aryan population‘ and were viewed as corrupting German values and culture. Between 1933 and 1945, an estimated 100,000 men were arrested for violating Nazi Germany’s law against homosexuality, and of these, approximately 50,000 were sentenced to prison. An estimated 5,000 to 15,000 men were sent to concentration camps on similar charges, where an unknown number of them perished.

SS leader Heinrich Himmler directed the increasing persecution of homosexuals in the Third Reich. Lesbians were not regarded as a threat to Nazi racial policies and were generally not targeted for persecution. Similarly, Nazi leaders generally did not target non-German homosexuals unless they were active with German partners. In most cases, they were prepared to accept homosexuals into the ‚racial community‘ provided that they became „racially conscious“ and did not act according to their natural inclination.

On May 6, 1933, students led by Storm Troopers (Sturmabteilung; SA) broke into the Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin and confiscated its unique library. Four days later, most of this collection of over 12,000 books and 35,000 irreplaceable pictures was destroyed along with thousands of other „degenerate“ works of literature in the book burning in Berlin’s city center. The remaining materials were never recovered. Magnus Hirschfeld, the founder of the Institute and a pioneer in the scientific study of human sexuality, was lecturing in France at the time and chose not to return to Germany.

The destruction of the Institute was a first step toward eradicating an openly gay or lesbian culture from Germany. Police closed bars and clubs such as the well-known „Eldorado“ and banned publications such as Die Freundschaft (Friendship). In this early stage the Nazis drove homosexuals underground, destroying their networks of support. In 1934, the Gestapo (the secret state police) instructed local police forces to keep lists of all men engaged in homosexual activities. Police in many parts of Germany had in fact been doing this for years. Nazi officials used these „pink lists“ to hunt down individual homosexuals during police actions.

On June 28, 1935, the Ministry of Justice revised Paragraph 175. The revisions provided a legal basis for extending Nazi persecution of homosexuals. Ministry officials expanded the category of „criminally indecent activities between men“ to include any act that could be construed as homosexual. The courts later decided that the intention to commit a homosexual act or even the contemplation of such an act was sufficient. On October 26, 1936, Himmler formed within the Security Police the Reich Central Office for Combating Homosexuality and Abortion. Josef Meisinger, executed in 1947 for his brutality in occupied Poland, led the new office. The police had powers to hold in protective custody or preventive arrest those deemed dangerous to Germany’s moral fiber, jailing indefinitely—without trial—anyone they chose. In addition, homosexual prisoners just released from jail were immediately re-arrested and sent to concentration camps if the police thought it likely that they would continue to engage in homosexual acts.

From 1937 to 1939, the peak years of the Nazi persecution of homosexuals, the police increasingly raided homosexual meeting places, seized address books, and created networks of informers and undercover agents to identify and arrest suspected homosexuals. On April 4, 1938, the Gestapo issued a directive indicating that men convicted of homosexuality could be incarcerated in concentration camps following their sentences. Between 1933 and 1945 the police arrested an estimated 100,000 men as homosexuals. Most of the 50,000 men sentenced by the courts spent time in regular prisons, and between 5,000 and 15,000 were interned in concentration camps.

The Nazis interned some homosexuals in concentration camps immediately after the seizure of power in January 1933. Those interned came from all areas of German society, and often had only the cause of their imprisonment in common. Some homosexuals were interned under other categories by mistake, and Nazi officials purposefully miscategorized some political prisoners as homosexuals. Prisoners marked by pink triangles to signify homosexuality were treated harshly in the camps. According to many survivor accounts, homosexuals were among the most abused groups in the camps.

Because some Nazi officials believed homosexuality was a sickness that could be cured, they designed policies to „cure“ homosexuals of their „disease“ through humiliation and hard work. Guards ridiculed and beat homosexual prisoners upon arrival, often separating them from other inmates. Rudolf Höss, commandant of Auschwitz, wrote in his memoirs that homosexuals were segregated in order to prevent homosexuality from spreading to other inmates and guards. Personnel in charge of work details in the Dora-Mittelbau underground rocket factory or in the stone quarries at Flossenbürg and Buchenwald often gave deadly assignments to homosexuals.

Survival in camps took on many forms. Some homosexual inmates secured administrative and clerical jobs. For other prisoners, sexuality became a means of survival. In exchange for sexual favors, some Kapos protected a chosen prisoner, usually of young age, giving him extra food and shielding him from the abuses of other prisoners. Homosexuals themselves very rarely became Kapos due to the lack of a support network. Kapo guardianship was no protection against the guards‘ brutality, of course. In any case, the Kapo often tired of an individual, sometimes killing him and finding another on the next transport. Though individual homosexual inmates could secure a measure of protection in some ways, as a group homosexual prisoners lacked the support network common to other groups. Without this help in mitigating brutality, homosexual prisoners were unlikely to survive long.

One avenue of survival available to some homosexuals was castration, which some criminal justice officials advocated as a way of „curing“ sexual deviance. Homosexual defendants in criminal cases or concentration camps could agree to castration in exchange for lower sentences. Later, judges and SS camp officials could order castration without the consent of a homosexual prisoner.

Nazis interested in finding a „cure“ for homosexuality expanded this program to include medical experimentation on homosexual inmates of concentration camps. These experiments caused illness, mutilation, and even death, and yielded no scientific knowledge.

There are no known statistics for the number of homosexuals who died in the camps. Leading scholars estimate that the death rate was 65 percent.
