How is the gay scene in Heidelberg?

Hallo zusammen, I will come to Heidelberg to stdy and was wondering how is the general gay scene, and how the students see LGBTQ population there. Also, do you know any LGBTQ student clubs/groups/bars in Heidelberg? Cheers!

haven’t heard about any in Heidelberg, but you should check out Mannheim for Clubs. Way bigger LGBTQ Community over there.

Not too excessive but there a quite a few homosexuals I know and friends of friends ect.

*Unheilbar: seems more like a house party to me. It’s LGBTQ. *halle02: They used to have an LGBTQ clubbing event but I haven’t seen one in a while *Queer festival: think it only takes place once a year tho

Like already mentioned, you actually have better luck in Mannheim. There’s this club event called Himbeerparty which takes places on the last Saturday of each month. It’s extremely popular among gays in the area. It’s also pretty convenient that there are like 4 or more gay bars (mostly catering to men) in that same area.

There’s also Plus Mannheim which offers an international meetup which is once a month on a Monday. I’ve only been to the meetup once and there weren’t a lot of people but the regulars can give you advice on where and how you can find certain partys/clubs/bars. That’s where I heard about the gay bar stuff despite not being gay/a man.

As for LGBTQ acceptance in Heidelberg. I’m fairly sure that the majority of people are open to it or at least accept it. I’ve seen gays and lesbians kissing on campus or on the bus and no one stared at them or made a remark. Granted, I’ve only been studying there for a year but so far I haven’t encountered any homophobic behavior.

It also depends on what you study or which faculty you belong to. Of course there’ll be the occasional immature, homophobic bunch of people who are in denial or simply haven’t matured enough to accept all forms of sexuality (depends on the age group) but I feel like people don’t really care or mind. For example, I know someone who is gay and tried really hard not to let anything slip about his preferences but everyone kinda had a feeling that he was gay and were totally accepting about it. The thing is just that most people will probably not want you to feel uncomfortable so they tend to tip-toe around it or pretend there’s nothing unusual. And if there are homophobic dudes then they’ll most likely just avoid you. I’ve also heard about LGBTQ meetups on campus but I haven’t been to any.

TL;DR Here’s a website with links to all LGBTQ events in Heidelberg and Mannheim The website’s layout is kinda messed up but if you don’t understand any German then you can just throw it in Google translate

There are some queer parties, like the Unheilbar at Villa Nachttanz or the Q-Massaka at Karlstor (didn’t see an ad for this one in a while).

LGBT – Gay Heidelberg Travel Guide

Though Heidelberg is a relatively small city, because of its large student population, there is definitely a noticeable queer scene to be found. For more (and more mainstream) options, you can always head to the much larger city of Mannheim less than 20 minutes away by train, but here are a few of the best things you should know about visiting gay Heidelberg.

Lady_fest – Heidelberg’s own version of the Lady_fest, a multi-day event, takes place irregularly (usually in summer), but is worth checking out if you’re looking for spaces specifically for queer women.

Going strong since 2009, this queer space puts on live music events, parties and acts as an important support space for the LGBT community in Heidelberg. Check out what’s going on when you’re in town!

2. Hauptstrasse and the Altstadt (Old Town)

Heidelberg’s Hauptstrasse is the place to start exploring this beautiful city. From this narrow main street, you’ll find countless even narrower side streets and alleyways just begging to be explored, each bursting with things to see: unspoiled medieval architecture, splendid old churches, boutique shops, galleries, cafés, and restaurants. Highlights include the early 15th-century Heiliggeistkirche, the Church of the Holy Ghost, and Haus zum Ritter, a Renaissance building dating from 1592. Other highlights include the Neckarstaden where you’ll find Marstall, the old court stables and home of Heidelberg University’s art collection, as well as the Stadthalle adjoining the landing stages for the many boats that take tourists for cruises along the castle-lined Neckar.

In December, the outstanding Heidelberg Christmas Market is so large it fills five city squares; one becomes a public skating rink, while the Kornmarkt is transformed into a fairy-tale scene with the lighted castle towering above.

3. Heidelberg University

On the south side of the Hauptstrasse lies Universitätsplatz, with the Old University dating back to 1711. On its east side, in Augustinergasse, is the Pedellenhaus with the former Student Prison, Karzer, which for many is the most memorable part of a visit to Heidelberg University. Here, students found guilty of misdeeds (such as dueling or disturbing the peace by singing at night) were incarcerated for 24 hours. While there, they decorated the walls with graffiti that remains today.

The New University was built in 1928-31, behind which rises the Hexenturm, or Witches‘ Tower, once part of the town’s fortifications. Nearby, in Grabengasse, you’ll find the richly stocked University Library whose principal treasure is the 14th-century Manessische Handschrift, an illuminated manuscript of medieval songs. Also of note are the Seminargebäude, the Mensa students‘ refectory, and the 15th-century Peterskirche, a tiny chapel now used mainly as the university church.

it seems the gay scene is in mannheim. i know a handful of gay guys who actually moved to mannheim from heidelberg in this last year because they were spending all their free time in mannheim anyhow. it’s a short commute to MA from HD.

Been in Heidelberg for more than a year now, and it seems like it’s dead when it comes to gay life. Almost sanitized. I do see other couples (same sex) couples around. My partner and I go to Mannheim to partake in some of the scenery, because of course, we need some color sometimes.

I despise bullying or belittling in any form and do not tolerate it.

It implies that the only thing gay people do is meet for sex.

Craigslist has far more ads for straight hook-ups. Does that mean there should not be any clubs for straight people either, because obviously they too are looking for sex, not just on Craigslist, but on the hundreds of other sites as well?

The Bent Bar is a great cocktail lounge in Heidelberg on the far end of the pedestrian area, past the Rathaus and Heiligeistkirche. It’s near the Kulturbrauerei but heading toward the Neckar. I’ve been there with straight and gay friends, but me as hetereo, was definitely in the minority.
