Respawn confirms that Bloodhound and Gibraltar are LGBTQ

Fans are starting to learn more about their favorite Apex Legends.

Apex Legends is still an extremely young game—but that hasn’t stopped fans of the new battle royale title from digging into the lore and history of the characters.

Most notably, developer Respawn Entertainment has revealed that two of the game’s Legends are LGBTQ.

Bloodhound is one of the game’s Legends, whose „identity is a mystery wrapped in layers of rumors,“ according to the character’s biography. Bloodhound is apparently „fabulously wealthy, a bloodthirsty murderer, a Goliath whisperer, a former slave, half bat, and a dozen other things depending on who’s doing the whispering.“

In addition to the information in that biography, though, Respawn community manager Jay Frechette told Rock, Paper, Shotgun that Bloodhound is „non-binary, or at least non-specified, in terms of gender.“

Fans of Apex Legends have also learned that another Legend, Gibraltar, is gay. Gibraltar’s biography reveals that he „only began to understand the value of protecting others when he and his boyfriend stole his father’s motorcycle, took it on a joyride, and got trapped by a deadly mudslide.“

Other developers have also recently revealed the sexuality of some characters in popular games—so it’s not too surprising to learn about the backstories of the Legends in Apex Legends.

Gay Guide Gibraltar

The different age of consent for homosexuals and heterosexuals has been abandoned in 2011 and is now at 16 years for all. Following a decision of the Supreme Court in 2013, politics was forced to eliminate the discriminatory legislation. Thus, in 2014, parliament has passed laws allowing a registered partnership. The adoption law has also been extensively changed so that homosexual couples can now adopt children. The law to allow gay marriage was passed in October 2016. Gibraltar is rich in history, shaped by the Roman Empire, Islam, medieval Spain or, since the 18th century, the British Empire, and it has a lot to offer: From secret passages drilled into the rock dating from World War II to enchanting colonial alleys. From breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and even the African coast to the „Moorish Castle“. It was built in the Middle Ages and sits on top of the Rock. Gibraltar is an ideal stop-over on a trip through southern Spain or on your way to Morocco.

In Gibraltar, male homosexuality has been legal since 1993. The age of consent is 16 for heterosexual and female homosexual acts, while the age of consent for male homosexual acts is maintained at 18. There is presently an inequality between English law and that of its Overseas Territories, particularly in respect of Gibraltar, which joined the EU under the British accession and is bound by EU requirements.

Two Apex Legends characters are LGBTQ, say EA and Respawn

is already making waves in the battle royale genre and it’s also proving to be ahead of the game when it comes to LGBTQ representation, too. Both EA and Respawn has confirmed that there are two Apex Legends LGBTQ characters, amounting to a quarter of the current roster. These LGBTQ Legends, to give them their in-game titles, are part of the game’s forward-thinking approach to the representation of minority and marginalized groups.

EA’s official bio page for the Legends specifically notes the sexuality of Gibraltar, one of eight characters you can play as in Respawn’s just-released battle royale. He is revealed to have once gone on a joyride with when he and “his boyfriend stole his father’s motorcycle,” making him an openly gay or bisexual protagonist a launch, a rarity in the medium.

The LGBTQ representation doesn’t stop there. As revealed by Jay Frechette, community manager at Respawn, during an interview with RPS is the fact that there is a second Apex Legends LGBTQ character, with Frechette confirming to reporter Nic Rueben that, “Bloodhound is non-binary, or at least non-specified, in terms of gender.”

In fact, the entirety of the Apex Legends roster is a refreshingly diverse group. Along with the two aforementioned LGBTQ characters are three women, two of whom are black. It is perhaps worth noting that Caustic (a white male) is locked behind over a dozen hours of grinding through gameplay, or available at the cost of $7.99. Considering the majority of games tend to feature white male protagonists, Respawn has certainly opted for a change of pace in this regard.

Of course, others have also made strides in recent months when it comes to revealing LGBTQ characters. Blizzard announced via a comic back in January that Overwatch hero Soldier 76 is gay.

With the lack of brouhaha surrounding these two reveals in particular at launch, this may be indicative of the idea that positive LGBTQ representation (and the lack of vitriolic abuse) can become the new normal in battle royales, gaming, and the world beyond.

Apex Legends Characters Bloodhound & Gibraltar Are LGBTQ Says Respawn

In a nice win for players seeking representation, EA and Respawn confirm Apex Legends‘ Bloodhound and Gibraltar are members of the LGBTQ community.

Respawn Entertainment’s sleeper hit stars a small but impressively diverse cast of characters, and the LGBTQ status of legends Bloodhound and Gibraltar have now been confirmed by both the developer and EA. For fans of the battle royale genre seeking representation in a medium that’s long neglected the level of onscreen inclusivity that’s only recently come into vogue, Apex Legends may be the most diverse free-to-play game on the market.

This news coincides with the game, a battle royale-flavored spin-off of Respawn’s Titanfall series, having quickly swelled into a major critical and financial success for the EA-owned studio since its February 4 release. Reaching 10 million unique players has proven that innovation and success in the battle royale genre can be achieved in tandem and that market domineers Fortnite and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 aren’t infallible. As much as it’s proven a boon for EA amid a self-inflicted dip in its stock value has arguably been an even greater victory for players looking for a new take on battle royale that’s as polished as it is strategic, with its novel respawn system, exhilarating movement, and tight gunplay.

Out of eight unique characters, or legends, EA and Respawn have confirmed that Bloodhound and Gibraltar each break with heteronormative stereotypes through external lore and interviews. EA’s official character descriptiongentle giant with a wild side“ who fulfills his support role with a dome shield and defensive barrage, makes mention of a formative incident in which „he and his boyfriend stole his father’s motorcycle, took it on a joyride, and got trapped by a deadly mudslide.“ Meanwhile, the flavor text for Bloodhound, a mysterious, Viking-inspired hunter who tracks foes with deadly precision, is the only character description offered that exclusively refers to them using „they/them“ pronouns.

Bloodhound’s non-binary identity was confirmed to be a conscious design choice by Respawn community manager Jay Frechette in a Rock, Paper, Shotgun interview, in which he related:

“Our studio is comprised of a diverse group of people, the playerbase of battle royale is comprised of a diverse group. Having a diverse cast is super important. You want everyone to have someone they can connect to.”

This effort to foster a sense of inclusion in Apex Legends is undoubtedly genuine on the part of Respawn, but one can’t help but think that it would be more impactful for the vast majority of players if any evidence of Gibraltar’s and Bloodhound’s status as members of the LGBTQ community was actually present in the game itself. Instead, these fascinating looks into the characters‘ lives are isolated to their respective corners of the internet, wholly external to the game. While this doesn’t quite resemble Blizzard’s delayed reveal about Overwatch’s Soldier: 76 that invited accusations of queerbaiting, it’s hard to argue that the Apex Legends players who Respawn is attempting to represent would be better served by also including these revelations in-game.

Nonetheless, Respawn is taking steps in nearly all the right directions with Apex Legends so far, and this most recent effort to include players is no exception. When considering Apex Legend’s quick climb to success and the game’s inherent live-service model (as well as a rumored Titanfall project coming this year), it will be will be intriguing to see how Respawn continues to put players first in 2019.

Gibraltar Gay Bars

Taking a holiday to Gibraltar can be an exciting trip unless the idea is to spend nights out at Gibraltar gay bars; this is because there is only one gay bar that will be found. There are other bars and clubs where it is possible to have fun, drinks and socializing that will usually be found by talking to members of the gay community.

The one Gibraltar gay bar that will be found is Charlie’s Hole In The Wall, this bar can be found on Castle Street and is owned by the secretary of gay rights in Gibraltar. The bar opens at 8:00 p.m. and stays open late and the visitor will find this a fun and relaxing place for a night out. There are drink specials, live entertainment, music and dancing.

This is also a bar where a visitor will be able to socialize with the locals especially on weekends. Weekends here are crowded and have live DJ music, dancing and other fun. During the week there are live events and karaoke. The atmosphere is one of fun, with a friendly staff and a full cocktail menu, they will also be able to suggest other bars and cafes to visit for drinks and socializing or a fun night out while in Gibraltar.

There are also cafes that can be found where many of the local gay community go to socialize and that offer cocktails and local brews. They also offer a menu for a light snack or a complete meal.

Currently the gay scene is a little limited but you are still able to find a good range of bars and clubs to visit while you stay here. There is one Gibraltar gay bar and club which is extremely popular with the local gay community and has been for several years.

Charles‘ Hole in the Wall is a very popular Gibraltar gay bar which can be found on Castle Street. This great little bar is gay owned and the owner himself is the Secretary of Gibraltar Gay Rights so you can be sure that you will have a fantastic night here – and maybe learn of a few other places to go during your visit to Gibraltar. This great little gay bar is usually very crowded and is open from 8pm until late most evenings. You can enjoy good music, entertainment and a friendly atmosphere here. The crowd is usually mixed but the majority are gay men looking for friends and fun.

As with most countries, when the current gay scene is limited this isn’t always a bad thing. With the expansion of the country and the increasing number of visitors and tourists there is always room for more gay bars and clubs in Gibraltar; savvy investors please take note!

Biography[edit | edit source]

Gibraltar is a gentle giant with a wild side. The son of two S.A.R.A.S. (Search and Rescue Association of Solace) volunteers, he has always been skilled at getting others out of dangerous situations that are common in the Outlands. However, he only began to understand the value of protecting others when he and his boyfriend Nikolas stole his father’s motorcycle, took it on a joyride, and got trapped by a deadly mudslide. His parents saved them, and his father lost an arm in the process. Gibraltar has never forgotten that sacrifice and has devoted his life to helping those in need.

The Apex Games didn’t change that, but they changed what it meant. Many of Gibraltar’s friends and colleagues have competed in the Games for extra money, fame, and glory over the years, and some never came home. Gibraltar joined to keep them safe and, for the first time, his skills as a rescuer and his rebellious nature worked together. He’s now become an icon in the Apex Games, putting himself in the line of fire to protect his squad and send his opponents running for cover.

LGBT

Equality Rights Group has fought and lobbied for the rights of the gay, lesbian and bisexual community in Gibraltar for more than a decade and, in dialogue with Government, it continues to work for the introduction of legal rights and recognitions for the LGB community as part of our overall commitment to human and civil rights for all in Gibraltar. For a long time, we were reticent about including ‘T’ rights into our campaign on the basis that no trans people had come forward. It was not in our prerogative to take up that struggle on the presumption of representativity. It seemed disrespectful so to do. This has now changed with the demand by a trans activist for the rights of transsexuals to form a part of our campaigning. We are happy, therefore, at this development; and, with their involvement, have now publicly made the call for transsexual rights to be progressed, with specific demands placed before Government. It is therefore, clearly, a broad campaign now for LGBT rights that we stand for.
