How to spend a Michigan’s Best Day in Gaylord

Gaylord is Michigan’s winter home. Especially in the Lower Peninsula.

It’s an easy drive on I-75 north from downtown Detroit or Ann Arbor and less than 3 hours from Grand Rapids. We love the variety of restaurants, vibrant business community, lively nightlife (yes, there is a nightlife), local breweries and long list of activities to experience „all outdoors“!

The city’s Alpine Village theme makes it a true winter destination.

That’s why Gaylord was the perfect place for us to spend a Michigan’s Best Day.

We would like to thank our sponsor of this Michigan’s Best Day episode, the Gaylord Area Tourism Bureau. They have an office downtown where you will find a long list of things to do, such as cross country and downhill skiing, snowshoeing, winter rafting, snowmobiling and other winter activities, especially for kids.

The goal of this video is to show you some of those activities. We hope you enjoy it.

We want to thank our MLive video team — on-site producer and editor Kyle Mattson, as well as videographers/editors Jeremy Marble, Neil Blake and Lori Chapman — who are the rock stars that make everything look so good.

We also want to thank the owners, managers and employees who made our visit so enjoyable.

The North Central State Trail goes through downtown Gaylord.

Sometimes Gaylord gets passed by as you’re headed north to Mackinac Island or crossing the bridge and going to the Upper Peninsula.

Well, it has a lot to offer, especially for families and groups of friends who are looking for a casual weekend or weekday escape.

On the video, Amy says „after the autumn leaves fall, snow totals add up and Gaylord becomes a wintry alpine village.“

Because it’s the highest elevation point of the Northern Lower Peninsula, it’s also prime for snow. A lot of snow, in fact. It gets an annual average of 160 inches of snow.

That’s MLive’s Jeremy Marble getting a closer view of the elk.

Amy takes a ride on the grooming machine at Treetops Resort.

At Treetops Resort, which is one of two major ski resorts in Gaylord, Amy got a front-row seat to what it’s like to be in the Snow-cat, a groomer that makes the slopes perfect for your next downhill experience. In fact, guests can enjoy the Sunrise Ride ride for $40 per person. The 20-minute adventure will take you places you can only get to by skis. Your ride will either be thrilling or tranquil, depending on your adventure level. Amy was up for a little of both with driver Brad Jacobsen. „It’s like driving a military tank in a way,“ he said.

„That was such a cool way to start the day,“ Amy said after her trip.

At Treetops, guests can enjoy a long list of other activities: Dog sledding, skiing, snowboarding, extreme tubing, winter sleigh rides, dining and more.

Treetops is located at 3962 Wilkinson Road in Gaylord.

This corner of the Lower Peninsula is surrounded by thousands of acres of national forest so you don’t have to go far to escape to nature. Right in town you’ll find Aspen Park, where you’ll experience trails meandering through serene forests and fields. The two-mile long paved path at the center of the park is a great way to warm up your legs on a chilly morning.

Throughout winter, it’s groomed into one of the best beginner cross country treks you’ll find in the state.

White Birch Outfitters has a wide selection of gear to make your „all outdoors“ experience complete.

We invited Casey Buckleitner and his dog, Teddy, to hang out with us while we snowshoed and hiked the park. He and his wife, Michelle, own White Birch Outfitters, which is on Main Street and rents out snowshoes and trekking poles to help you take on the drifting snow. He also has a shop inside the main lodge at Otsego Resort. He’s a great guide and resource if you want to learn more about the area.

Aspen Park is located at 239 Commerce Blvd. in Gaylord.

White Birch Outfitters is located at 302 W Main St. in Gaylord. Learn more at

Aspen Park is also known for this striking tunnel of planted red pines.

The elk herd is contained on 108 acres. City staff feed the animals corn, hay and sugar beets, plus vitamins.

Northeast Otsego county is a stretch of state land that’s home to Michigan’s only wild elk herd. But you don’t have to search through the backwoods to spot one of these magnificent animals. Elk were reintroduced here in 1915 after going extinct the previous century because of habitat destruction and unregulated hunting.

Walk or pull your car right up to the fence of the Gaylord City elk park to get a face-to-face encounter with these impressive animals. What started as three displaced elk following the closure of a local nature center in the mid-1990’s is now home to a healthy heard of dozens.

Gonzo and Gaylord city employee Ed Tholl have a little fun with the antlers. Tholl said they collect about four sets of antlers each season and those go to charities for auctions and fundraisers.

City employee Ed Tholl was kind enough to give us an up-close tour, taking us in his truck and right into their habitat. (Gonzo wasn’t planning on that!)

We were only a few feet from these magnificent animals that can weigh as much as 800 pounds. Thank goodness we arrived after their feeding of hay, as the herd of about 38 wild elk seemed pretty content. You will also see Sika and Fallow deer.

Pro Tip 1: You can view the elk behind a fence at the Elks Club, which we have done before. But view from your car if the city building gate is open. The Elk Park is located at 116 Grandview Blvd in Gaylord.

Pro Tip 2: You can see elk year-round. But the best months are September and October when the males (bulls) are trying to establish dominance for mating rights with the females (cows). Another good time to view elk is from late April through early May. Elk are active throughout the daylight hours eating the new green growth and there are few people out to see them. Bring binoculars.

Amy Sherman with Snowbelt co-owner Angielena Mullenberg.

Located in the center of Gaylord’s Alpine-themed downtown, it’s a great spot to grab a bite, order a flight and chat up the locals. Angielena and Nate Muellenberg opened Snowbelt brewing in the summer of 2016. They always have a great variety of beers on tap. We especially like the My Chest Hurts IPA, a beer with a fun story to it. (When Nate Muellenberg doesn’t want to do something at home, it’s his go-to excuse: „I can’t honey, my chest hurts.“)

Also, we were impressed with the quality of food from such a tiny kitchen. We loved the Mac & Cheese Tot Waffle, Brisket Sandwich and gooey Grown Up Grilled Cheese.

Snowbelt Brewing Company is located at 132 W. Main St. in Gaylord.

We arrived at Snowbelt Brewery on a busy, midweek Business After Hours event.

The brewery’s success has been its vibe as a community gathering place. „We want to stay a nice small, niche brewery in the heart of Gaylord and be a destination spot,“ Nate said.

„It’s bringing people together and having a good conversation,“ Angielena added.

It’s also known for its popular Friday night live music series. See the full list of acts at

The SunnySide Hop is a New England-style IPA and a big seller (only second to My Chest Hurts IPA).

We may have found it in Gaylord at the Alpine Chocolat Haus. Amy went on a tour of the production facility that supplies goodies to four locations across the state. And then we teamed up to check out the caramel apples, fudge, chocolate-drenched treats, and yes, piping hot cups of coca at the downtown Gaylord store.

Owner Bruce Brown is known as “der chocolatmeister” and we fell in love with his chocolates and enthusiasm for the community.

Open since 1985, Brown got into the business with no experience.

„A lot of these recipes are my own recipes,“ he said.

His most popular item? The chocolate-covered potato chips. They are Ruffle chips covered in a sweet chocolate. „It’s a perfect combination,“ he said.

After we stocked up on treats, we visited Pat Bak at the National Weather Service office, located a few miles from downtown Gaylord. You’ll know you have arrived when you see the big green soccer ball (Doppler) atop the building.

Gaylord is so central to winter in the state that the National Weather Service merged its regional offices here in 1995.

Pat gave us great insight as to why Gaylord gets the most snow of anywhere in the Northern Lower Peninsula — hence why everyone loves to refer to it as the „Snowbelt.“ (It has to do with the Lake Effect from Lake Michigan and Lake Superior.)

During big storms, as many as 10 meteorologists can be on hand to issue advisories and keep the public informed through social media and media releases/interviews. The website has a lot of tools available to weather watchers, as well as two webcams. One even measures the current snowfall totals for Gaylord.

The NWS Gaylord office is located at 8800 Passenheim Road.

It is open for public tours, which must be set up in advance.

All that snow is why Gaylord is home to two of the state’s top ski resorts.

At Otsego Resort, this formerly private club dating back to 1939, recently opened its doors to the public. The resort, which was the first to bring the spirit of the alps to Gaylord, boasts 30 ski trails and five lifts mazing through 136 acres.

A few miles east of downtown you’ll find Treetops Resort. What started as a humble hill in the 1980’s was turned into a ski and golf mecca by auto parts mogul Harry Melling. Today, it’s home to 80 acres of fun with 23 downhill ski runs and seven ski lifts.

We have been to both and enjoy each one in different ways.

Otsego Resort is located at 696 M-32 East in Gaylord.

Treetops Resort is located at 3962 Wilkinson Road in Gaylord.

On this trip we spent a little more time at Otsego Resort to discover all of its amenities, including multiple ski runs, the Sitzmark Bar and stunning views of the Sturgeon River Valley.

After checking out the multiple ski runs at variable skill levels (with Casey Buckleitner of White Birch Outfitters), we stopped by the famous River Cabin. Nestled at the bottom of the ski hills, the cabin is a great place to warm up or take a break to enjoy the beauty of the Sturgeon River.

You can enjoy a cup of hot cocoa while sitting around the indoor copper-hooded fire pit or the riverside outdoor fire pit. You can also have some chili. Or belly up to the bar for a beverage or two.

Not a skier? Not a problem. Take a complimentary shuttle ride from the Main Lodge down to the River Cabin. It has limited hours so check the website or ask for details when you check in.

After the River Cabin, we decided to spend a couple hours of fun at Otesgo’s tubing run. On this night it was Disco Tubing. The kids will love it. Flashing lights, a tow rope to get you back up the hill and plenty of screams!!!

It’s even cosy and warm outside at the Alpine Tavern Igloo Village.

After having your thrills on the hills, it’s time for dinner!

And Alpine Tavern is one of the best places in town to refuel for the next day.

The spacious pub is accessible to snowmobilers on the nearby trail and features a variety of traditional American fare to please everyone.

You can start your meal with a Brick O’ Fries, an enormous pile of French fries dripping with melted cheddar cheese, bacon and chives. Or maybe enjoy the panko-crusted chicken tenders with an array of sauces in a mini ski boat.

Alpine Tavern is located at 220 S. Otsego Ave #1 in Gaylord.

Now that’s an appetizer! The Brick O‘ Fries at Alpine Tavern.

After finishing a great meal, including that wild brick of fries, cozy up with friends and a warm or cold drink in their Alpine Igloo Village. Spots are free, but you’ll want to make a reservation. You can also order champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries for a night with friends. The igloos have been a big hit in the community.

We had a great time sharing what makes winter an incredible time of year to visit this part of the state.

Even if you’re not a gold medalist on the slopes, like John, the abundance of snow, activities for every age and delicious destinations all combine for a Michigan’s Best Day here in Gaylord.

Schönes Luftschloss Gaylord Gladiator – Sportwagen by Zeppelin

Below is an overview of the key components of our plan:

We have implemented extra-stringent daily cleaning procedures that are focused heavily on high touchpoint areas. In public spaces, Gaylord Hotels has added to its already rigorous cleaning protocols, the requirement that surfaces are treated with hospital-grade disinfectants and that this cleaning is done with increased frequency. Public spaces, including, but not limited to, the lobby, aquatic areas, fitness centers, and meetings & convention spaces, have dedicated staff to sanitize frequently throughout the day. In guest rooms, we have added detailed cleaning practices, requiring all surfaces to be thoroughly cleaned with hospital-grade disinfectants. We also are placing disinfecting wipes in each guest room for guests‘ personal use.

Each hotel will be required to have a hygiene plan. STARS will be required to be aware of and follow for personal hygiene, physical distancing and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), in compliance with all federal, state and local public health guidance. Hand sanitizing stations for guest use will be placed in high traffic areas and public spaces.

We are using signage throughout our hotels to remind guests to maintain social distancing protocols and have removed or re-arranged furniture to allow more space for distancing. In compliance with local and state mandates, occupancy limits and seating capacities have been reduced to allow for appropriate social distancing. We have added partitions at front desks, concierge stands, and food and beverage service lines to provide an extra level of precaution for our guests; and, have implemented line management initiatives to reinforce proper social distancing. For the protection of our guests and STARS, we have implemented „upon request only“ housekeeping service and no STARS are permitted into guest rooms while a guest is present unless for emergency reasons. Masks and gloves are available to all STARS.

Guests can choose to use their phones to check in, access their rooms, make special requests and order room service that is specially packaged and delivered right to the door without contact. These „touchless“ services can all be done quickly via the Marriott Bonvoy mobile app.

At Gaylord Hotels, food handlers and supervisors are trained on safe food preparation and service practices. The company’s food and beverage operations are required to conduct self-inspections using its food safety standards as guidelines, and compliance are validated by independent audits. We have also enhanced sanitation guidelines and training videos for STARS that include hygiene and sanitizing practices. In addition, the company has modified operational practices for in-room dining and has designed new approaches to buffets.

A comprehensive protocol for cleaning, sanitizing, and maintaining physical distancing has been designed to keep attendees safe. Where appropriate, these protocols can be adjusted in partnership with our meeting planners. For example, seating capacities and floor plans may be reviewed on an event-by-event basis to ensure adequate physical distancing that follows local fire department, as well as state and local health authority guidelines. This may include density reduction in meeting rooms and exhibit hall spaces. Convention public space attendants are dedicated to regular cycles of high-touch point sanitization areas and electrostatic sprayers are being used in meeting, conference and tradeshow spaces. In addition, our industry-leading team of sales and event experts are in place to support meeting planners and attendees in navigating the current meetings landscape.

All STARS are required to have their temperature taken prior to entering their work area. Anyone with a temperature at or above 100.4°F or exhibiting any known symptoms of COVID-19 (following the definition of a reportable illness per the CDC) are not allowed to work. STARS are trained on how to respond swiftly and report all presumed on-property cases of COVID-19 to the local health department. If the property is alerted to a presumptive case of COVID-19 at the resort, the property will work with the local health department to follow the appropriate recommended actions.

Case Notification

All Gaylord Hotels have certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and/or a Registered Nurse (RN) on-site. If the hotel is alerted to a suspected case of COVID-19, the guest will be directed toward appropriate medical care through our staff, who follow the direction of local health authorities. We will then conduct additional cleaning and disinfecting protocols of all areas that the guest may have been in during their visit.
