Gayatri is the name of the Vedic meter in which the verse is composed. Its recitation is traditionally preceded by where and by the formula bhur bhuvaḥ svaḥ, known as mahavyahṛti, or “great statement (mystic)”. Vishvamitra had created the Gayatri mantra. The Gayatri mantra is widely cited in Vedic and post-Vedic texts, such as the mantra lists of the Srauta liturgy, and classical Hindu texts such as the Bhagavad Gita, Harivamsa and Manusmṛti . The mantra and its associated metric form were known to the Buddha, and in a sutra, the Buddha is described as “expressing appreciation” for the mantra. The mantra is an important part of the upanayana ceremony for young men in Hinduism, and has long been recited by dvija men as part of their daily rituals. Modern Hindu reform movements have spread the practice of mantra to include women and all castes and its use is now widespread .

The Gayatri Mantra is one of the most powerful Mantras dedicated to the Mother of the Vedas and the Goddess of the five elements Gayatri, also known as Savitri. The Mantra is a part of the Rig Veda’s third Mandala which has 62 hymns.
The chanting of the Mantra begins with the Pranava Mantra, OM. It is believed to be a secret Mantra that is passed from one generation to the generation. The father recites this Mantra into the ears of a male child during his Upanayanam ceremony. Some people believe that the Mantra must not be chanted aloud but must be said quietly. Nonetheless, there are different believes and practices.
The reason why Goddess Gayatri holds such an esteemed position is that she represents infinite knowledge. It is she who eliminates the darkness (ignorance) from our life, and helps us attain enlightenment by showering us with the wisdom that we need in our day to day life, and also the life that extends beyond.

Gayatri Mantra Meaning
Let’s now know the literal meaning of Gayatri Mantra by bifurcating the sentences word by word.
There is no hard and fast rule for this. A mantra can be chanted anytime but with a peaceful and happy mind. But to get the best result out of Gayatri Mantra, you can chant at Praatah (Morning), Sandhya (Evening) or Ushakaal. In the morning it can be chanted half and hour before and after sunrise and in the afternoon-half an hour before and afternoon (when the sun is above head) and in the evening half-and-hour before and after sunset.
Again there is nothing absolute about it. One can chant as many time as they want. The pronunciation and way of chanting are what matters. But for maximum benefit, it is usually chanted for 108 times per session. And one should conduct 9-10 sessions throughout the thing to be noted that while chanting the prayer or mantra, you should use a Rudraksha Mala. It will help you with counting.
