Best Gay Sex Positions Guide

The “how to” of sex positions is imperative for any relationship. Mastering different positions not only heightens the experience, but also provides a deeper connection with your partner–both literally and figuratively. At Bespoke Surgical, we think about sex in completely different ways and by bringing science into sex, a new era of understanding will allow improvement for everyone. Regardless of which positions you explore, it’s important to understand that their differences:

• Affect the top and the bottom in different ways • Bring out both submissive or aggressive characteristics of each person • Require an understanding of both everyone’s positioning (height, penis curvature, and pelvic angle)

Little nuances and adjustments can make all the difference in terms of pleasure vs. pain, as does open and honest communication. It’s key to choose wisely which initial entry positions you start with. Go slow and allow yourself to progress from there. Steady movements with gradual changes are elemental.

The last, and most important, bit of advice I will leave you with is: communication. The best of the best communicate throughout the entire process. Why? Because success hinges on this concept.

11 Best Gay Sex Positions (As Written By A Gay Man)

For whatever reason, heterosexual men and women seem to believe that gay men like myself hold secrets to everything wonderful and fabulous in life, including when it comes to knowing the best sex positions (and how to have truly great sex).

Before diving into the juicy stuff, I have a confession to make. Being a man of integrity and what not, I feel it’s my duty to admit that we gay men don’t really corner the market on sex positions. We are simply talented at naming and performing the positions (thankyouverymuch).

Yes, we gay men are quite proud to be known as the „Lewis and Clark“ of sexual exploration/creation of new gay sex positions.

And of course, a few of these we take no credit for, other than credit for fully enjoying these positions to their fullest.

Everything Straight People Don’t Realize About Gay Sex

The basic mechanics of gay male sex remain a mystery to many.

It’s not surprising, considering the lack of gay representation in entertainment and the disturbing void of sex education in schools. Ever hear of a „no promo homo“ law? It’s a heinous education law that expressly prohibits teachers from discussing LGBT issues — including sexual health, which can lead LGBT youth to feel invisible, anxious, or depressed.

I don’t know about you, but all I got from my health class in Catholic school was a small stick of Old Spice deodorant and the unsettling feeling that Jesus would know when I masturbated.

When a friend blurted out, „You can have sex facing each other?!“ after we’d finished watching a racy sex scene on HBO’s tragically short-lived series Looking, I knew it was time to take a stand. What follows are the building blocks of gay male sex, hopefully providing acceptable answers to all your questions about doggy-style, tops, bottoms, and who pays on a date.

Everything Straight People Don't Realize About Gay Sex

11 Gay Sex Positions

I hate two things in this world when it comes to sex, condoms and same, boring, old school vanilla sex. The first one is essential and I never think of not using it during penetration, therefore, there are two things to change which are either the position during intercourse or adding some nice adult toys into your sessions to spice them up. I assume that you’ve already had many toys but don’t worry if you have not, I’ll give you some tips on that case as well in my article but my main mission is explaining 11 Gay Sex Positions that I’ve chosen for you based on both my personal experiences and people’s comments on the positions as there are hundreds of different sex positions available.

Speaking of mission, of course, we are grateful for the basic positions like missionary and doggy style, however, it is time to move on. And also feel free to share these positions with your straight friends as well because the positions can be adapted easily into heterosexual partners. Last but not least, keep in mind that the positions are ordered by increasing difficulty and please don’t take action without the consent of your partner.

Now that we’ve got that covered, it’s time to learn more about the best gay sex positions.

Anal sex positions

Most of these gay sex positions are anal sex positions, but there are some non-penetrative sexual positions at the end too.

If you’re after more anal sex reading, here’s another general guide on how to have anal sex that covers douching, communication, lube and some other stuff.

Top, bottom or versatile?

We’re going to look at gay sex positions from the point of view of a top and a bottom.

If you’re versatile (and we encourage you all to be), lucky you, you can do both. In some gay sex positions the top leads the action, and in some the bottom takes the lead.

Interested in finding out why some guys are top and some are bottom? Here’s a scientific study from 2017 that talks about it.

Try the gay missionary position first

This gay sex position may sound boring, but it’s not, we promise. It’s one of the easiest positions for a top, and not especially difficult for a bottom.

During gay sex, if you’re engaging in foreplay and sucking his cock while he’s laying down, keep licking, kissing and sucking as you move your mouth down towards his balls.

Then go further, toward his perineum (the bit between his balls and his ass) and then his butthole.

Bottom: if you’re enjoying this, give him a few moans and wriggle your asshole a bit closer to where his tongue is.

If he’s keen, keep eating his ass. Open his ass cheeks and get in there deep with your tongue. If you can, and body shapes and sizes depend on this, lift his ass up a bit.

Seeing eye to eye

The gay missionary position is good for maintaining eye contact and clear communication during anal sex.

You can penetrate your partner slowly and carefully, keeping an eye on the target. You can build up a momentum that you’re both comfortable with. And it’s easy to get back in if you slip out, because you can see everything clearly.

Now try riding a guy’s cock

If you’re new to getting f**ked, or nervous about taking a big dick, this gay sex position could be good for you, because as a bottom, you’ll have the control.

It’s a good one for gaining confidence when it comes to taking cock – if it starts to hurt, you can slow down, and lower yourself onto him at your own pace.

You need a certain amount of athleticism to be able to ride your man. You want to be going up and down, and slightly back and forth, at the same time. A bit like riding a horse.

If you’re bigger built than your top, or if you’re a bigger guy in general this one can be tricky as gravity is against you. Be careful not to crush the chap under you or he’ll be at risk of losing his erection.

Lube is a (gay) man’s best friend

Think of that move as the opposite of a slip-and-slide. That’s a man’s ass. There’s no natural lubricant in the equation here, including saliva. Store-bought lube is absolutely essential if you want to avoid tearing and general discomfort.

Spontaneity, who?

Safe sex is great sex

Years after the AIDS epidemic, there’s still a pervasive misconception that gay sex is dirty and undoubtedly leads to STDs, which simply isn’t true. Today, we even have PrEP: a pill that, taken daily, helps prevent HIV infection. Oh, and it ought to go without saying, but if you’re HIV-positive, this doesn’t make you dirty or unbeautiful. You can still have sex: with condoms, and with responsible sexual behavior that’s less risky (e.g., oral sex or the HIV-positive person acting as the receiver).

No, there isn’t a guy and a girl

„So, who’s the guy and who’s the girl?“ Smh. This is no place for heteronormativity, people. A gay man is still a man regardless of whether he prefers to top or bottom. Restrictive gender roles have no place in any relationship, and certainly not a gay one. If both men identify as men, then they’re men.

Teaspoons

This position is derived from Doggy Style so it is easy to get into this position from regular Doggy Style. Simply, the giver gets down on his knees wide open and the receiver faces in the same direction in front of him while getting down on his knees as well. If the receiver has his knees together, the giver can come closer behind him and wrap his arms around him. Therefore, we can easily say that the Teaspoons allows partners to have intimate moments. As a receiver, you can bounce up and down for more thrusts and you can also put your hands around his back or neck while kissing him. Leaning back against him is another option for more intimacy by feeling as much of his body as possible. As a giver, you can give a hand job to your partner during penetration and you can also kiss his lips, neck and back. Just remember, this position is all about intimacy, be gentle and prolong your ejaculation to have more time than usual. If you can’t make it by your own means which is absolutely OK and has a solution, get a cock ring for yourself either from one of our Oh Zone Adult Lifestyle Centres or by ordering online on our website which is pretty easy, go back to our home page and write what you need into the search box at the right top of the page e.g. cock rings and get lost in heaps of different kinds of cock rings. Kidding, it is impossible to get lost, thanks to the other reviews about every single item that you can think of on our blog written by professionals in this area, for example cock rings again. There is that same search box on blog page too which means that all information about sex and sex toys is a click away.

Top Sexual Positions, By Sexual Orientation

When it came to sexual orientation, our survey respondents were mostly inclined to agree on their favourite position– regardless of their gender preferences. Straight, bisexual, and gay participants all told us that doggy style was their favourite position over any other. They also identified missionary as a favored position and straight and bisexual respondents were both inclined to enjoy holding their partners legs up.

Anal was listed as a favourite by bisexual and gay respondents while 69 and oral only made the top-five positions by those who identified exclusively as gay or lesbian.

Sexual Desires, By Orientation

Straight, bisexual, or gay, survey respondents were mostly curious about the same positions.

They agreed that tabletop, 69 standing up, kneeling wheelbarrow, and reverse cowgirl were escapades they most wanted to explore. Standing during intercourse was also voted by bisexual and gay respondents as particularly intriguing. No one ever said you needed the bed (or bedroom) for a successful physical connection.

Only those who identified as straight listed anal as a position they most wanted to try.

Missionary

A classic position for straight couples, missionary is pretty common for gay partners as well. In this position, the bottom lies on his back with his legs spread apart in the air while the active partner lies on top so the couple is face-to-face. Penetration from this angle allows for intimate eye contact and kissing, and the bottom can wrap his legs around the top to anchor thrusting. While not necessarily the kinkiest position, missionary is great for more inexperienced or vanilla couples. If you slip a pillow under the small of the bottom’s back for extra support, they can lay comfortably without having to strain to keep their legs in the air.

Doggy Style

Another classic gay sex position is doggy style. While potentially less intimate than missionary, doggy style allows you and your partner to explore each other in a new way. Doggy style really puts the top in control, so it’s the perfect position for more dominant tops and submissive bottoms. In doggy style, the bottom gets on all fours while the top kneels behind him. Holding on to the bottom’s hips for support, the top enters the bottom from behind. Penetration from this angle can feel harder and deeper for bottoms, and doggy style can be better for prostate stimulation for some men. Doggy style is good for couples of all experience levels, but it can require extra stamina from tops.

Cowboy

For couples with more dominate bottoms and tops who like to take it easy, cowboy is the ideal gay sex position. In the cowboy position, the top sits or lies back while the bottom straddles him across his pelvis facing forward, either in a kneel or squatting position. The cowboy position gives the bottom control over penetration, which can help to achieve prostate stimulation. The top can also thrust into the bottom from this position, shifting the dynamic between dominate and submissive partner. Cowboy is a good position for couples of all experience levels, but bottoms should be prepared for a workout.

The Bodyguard

If the traditional horizontal positions have lost their excitement, try a standing position. Standing positions allow both partners an increased range of motion compared to horizontal positions—you can move together, or one can remain still while the other establishes and varies the rhythm. The most classic standing position, sometimes known as “the bodyguard,” is when the bottom faces away from the top and the top enters from behind. For anchorage, the bottom should hold onto a nearby wall, table, or other surface. Because the bodyguard position is more accommodating in small spaces or in the outdoors, they’re great for more adventurous couples who want to take sex out of the bedroom.

Pirate’s Bounty

The flashy name may make this position sound more complicated than it is, but the pirate’s bounty is a must-have in any gay sex wheelhouse. In this position, the bottom lies down his back, shifting his pelvis so that one leg is down and the other is up in the air. The active partner kneels, facing the bottom, and puts the bottom’s elevate leg on his shoulder as he enters him. This angle allows for a deep penetration. If the bottom is flexible, the top can push the elevated leg towards the bottom’s head for an even deeper and more intimate experience.

Spooning

Spooning is one of the most intimate gay sex positions. Both partners lay on their sides, the top on the outside as the “big spoon.” The top enters the bottom from behind, with the bottom’s top leg elevated to allow for entry. For an extra deep penetration, the top can hook his elbow under the bottom’s elevated knee for easier access. This position involves a lot of close body contact, making it a great option for couples looking for an intimate and sensual sexual encounter.

Suspended Congress

For the more adventurous and active gay couples out there, suspended congress is an exciting and erotic challenge. This position is designed to get you out of bed and work on your cardio too. In this position, the top stands and picks up the bottom, who wraps his arms around the top’s neck for support. The top then enters the bottom from this position, holding the bottom’s thighs in his arms to support the bottom’s hips against his pelvis. For extra support while thrusting, put the bottom’s back against a wall or other solid structure. For more fit couple, try a free-standing suspended congress for a real full-body workout.

Arch

While not necessarily the ideal position for less experienced bottoms, the arch position is great for gay couples looking to explore sex from a new perspective. To get into the arch position, bottoms lay face up and lifts his hips upward, while keeping his feet and the back of his neck planted on the floor. The top kneels facing the bottom, entering him by placing his pelvis underneath the bottom’s raised hips. This position requires some serious back flexibility in terms of the bottom’s role, which is why it’s not recommended for the inexperienced, but this angle of penetration can be intensely stimulating and pleasurable for both tops and bottoms.

5. Back It In

Finally, it’s time for the bottom to do some work. This gay sex position requires the top to sit in a chair, bringing his knees up to his chest, allowing his penis to be outward and forward.

The bottom backs into the position, allowing the penis to enter him.

Once the penis is inserted, it’s time for the bottom to make it work by creating all the thrust and momentum.

6. Knee Up, Knee Up, Keep It Up

If you’ve never had your booty exposed, just know this gay sex position is about maximum exposure.

Think of it as a reverse child’s pose in yoga. The bottom lays down on a couch (bed, floor, table, hood of a car, etc.) while the top grasps the bottom’s ankles, calves or knees (whatever is comfortable for the bottom) and simultaneously pushes the legs back toward the bottom’s chest as the top inserts his penis. The more the legs get pushed back, the tighter the backside feels.

Variation: Bottom stays in the same position while the top lays perpendicular and sideways to the bottom.

7. Rock, Rock, Rockin‘ In The Rocking Chair

Thank goodness I never caught grams and gramps in this position, or I would have sworn off of sex altogether. Besides, this gay sex position isn’t for the frail or faint at heart.

Here’s how to do it: the top lays back pulling knees to chest. The bottom sits backward between the top’s legs, inserting top’s penis into himself.

Once comfortable and fully astride, the bottom begins a rhythmic motion of rocking back and forth to his liking.

9. See-Saw

This gay sex position requires the giving partner to be in shape (eh, a little ab definition wouldn’t hurt either), as they’ll be getting a heck of a workout. Also, a chair is required.

The top lies on the ground and props their calves up on a chair while keeping his body straight. The bottom straddles the top’s legs and inserts penis into his partner. At that point, either party can begin the rhythmic motion of their choosing.

11. I Can Fly

For this gay sex position, the top sits in a chair trying to keep his body as elongated as possible. The bottom straddles the top facing toward him or away from him (both require the bottom to be capable of extreme feats of balance).

If the bottom is facing the top, straddled and mounted, with top’s penis inside, the bottom leans back, allowing the top to grasp his wrists to facilitate balance. The bottom then lifts up his legs, and starts to fly through the air backward as the top controls the thrusting.

To fly like a superhero in this position, the bottom straddles the top, mounting and inserting top’s penis into himself. Once mounted, the bottom leans forward, thrusting his arms backward to the top so that top can grasp the bottom’s wrists. Once engaged, bottom lifts legs, flying forward with the greatest of ease, letting the top control the rhythm.

I’m not sure about you, but at this point I’m exhausted.

The thought of doing all of these may end up costing me $500 in chiropractor visits, plus an additional $1,000 in massages.

Nonetheless, enjoy and don’t break too many coffee tables, limbs, or wear out your libido by attempting all these gay sex positions in one evening!
