The Best Current TV Shows with Gay Characters

Unlike in the past, series like Batwoman, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and plenty of others now feature gay and lesbian characters without focusing overtly on their sexuality. In the past, most gay characters‘ predominant trait was the fact that they were gay. Now, we have LGBTQ+ TV shows with gay characters who are defined by their other traits as well, and they just happen to be gay.

Many people relate the growing presence and positive portrayal of the Q+ community in television to the gradually changing ideals of America. Many television writers have attempted to tackle the issue of gay rights and in doing so, they have helped to change the national narrative.

Thanks to that, we now have gay shows featuring gay characters who are everything from superheroes to prisoners to stay at home dads. Check out this list of gay and lesbian TV shows and vote up the series you think are the best current TV shows with gay characters.

Homosexuality is something which has been a part of anime for a long time. In most shows, we can find one or two characters who are homosexual. Sometimes their portrayal is quite realistic or interesting while other times they are usually used for comic purposes. Since I have already done a list on anime with lesbian characters, it’s about time I compile those who have gay characters. Here’s the list of top anime with gay characters. You can also watch many of these best gay anime on Crunchyroll, Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime.

Pretty Little Liars

Pretty Little Liars

POOR US

Let’s hear it for the big boys! It’s no secret that representation in media is important, which is exactly why POOR US’s main protagonist Tanner Maxwell is so refreshing! Confident, powerful and sassy – Tanner is a plus size gay character that breaks the mold.

“I wrote POOR US because Hollywood wasn’t writing for my character type,” says Jeremy Dozier – writer, producer and star of the award-winning POOR US. “Every role I auditioned for either centered around weight in some way or was Security Guard #4. I wanted more. It’s about time big boys get a character that they can root for and see themselves in; one that isn’t ashamed of their body or sexuality.”

Dozier’s award-winning role (Dozier was named Best Actor at the LA Shorts Awards earlier this month) is boundary pushing. “I wanted to play a confident, powerful fat gay character; something rarely, if ever, seen,” says Dozier. “Growing up, I don’t remember seeing myself represented in media. If I had, coming out, coming to terms with my body and figuring out where I fit in in gay culture would have been easier.”

The brainchild of openly gay actor/comedian Jeremy Dozier (Dirty Girl, iCarly), POOR US follows the story of two gay, fraternal twin brothers as they cope with being cut off by their filthy-rich father and try to rebuild their lives in hell, or as it’s better know: Van Nuys. Think Broad City meets Schitt’s Creek, but gayer.

User Reviews

Web series are the way of the future and I am glad I stumbled across this one. Not only is it set in the most glorious of cities on earth, it features some amazing acting from a supremely talented cast, some emotional and surprising plot twists, and some deep and abiding humor. Sure, sometimes it seems a bit over the top – and thank god – what good gay doesn’t like a bit of melodrama! C’mon, we thrive on it as a people!Five friends in NYC live their lives as best they can, and even though some of the plots are disconnected from each other (and let’s be honest, isn’t that how real life is?), they all come together, because that’s how we survive: by finding humor in tragedy, finding comfort from friends? Eagerly awaiting season 2 — and will absolutely watch anything any of this incredible ensemble are in in the future.

Ok – dann gebe ich You Me Her doch eine Chance!

Alles Liebe,Annie

THE NEW 30 was nominated for a Daytime Emmy this past spring (2019) as “Outstanding Digital Daytime Drama”! 14.1k subscribers on YouTube. It should definitely be on this list!

A lot more has come out of Asia since Make It Right though I wouldn’t really call them web series since they originally aired on TV despite only being online internationally.

World of BL has been doing a good job putting together links to series.

Club Friday 5: Secret of a Heart That Doesn’t Exist

11. Cardcaptor Sakura (1998)

This anime belongs to the fantasy/magic genre. The plot follows the life of a young girl named Sakura. One day she finds a book filled with cards and before she could understand anything the cards are accidentally blown away and scattered all over the world. Later, a beast from the books tells her that the cards are magical and can pose a great threat to the world. She needs to get them back and seal them in the book. The gay characters here are Toya, Sakura’s older brother and Yukito, his best friend.

7.  Hana-Kimi: For You in Full Blossom (1996)

Mizuki is a Japanese track and field star. She wants to become better at it. She decides to join the high school in which her idol Izumi, a high jumper, goes to. But wait! That’s an all-boys school. Mizuki decides to cross-dress and hide her true identity from everyone but the coming of a new student who makes people question their orientation can be a bit troublesome for her. There are many instances of homosexuality in this anime. Hokuto Umeda, Akiha Hara are some of the queer characters.

1. Doukyuusei (2016)

Unlike many of the other anime on this list which has a few gay characters who don’t affect the storyline much, Doukyuusei is a romantic genre anime movie that is based on the homosexuality between the two male protagonists. Rhito is an A-level student while Hikaru is a guitarist in a band. Though they walk on completely different paths fate pulls them together and Hikaru helps Rhito prepare for a chorus. From here onwards the two start meeting regularly, eventually developing a romantic relationship.
