Unlike in the past, series like Batwoman, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and plenty of others now feature gay and lesbian characters without focusing overtly on their sexuality. In the past, most gay characters‘ predominant trait was the fact that they were gay. Now, we have LGBTQ+ TV shows with gay characters who are defined by their other traits as well, and they just happen to be gay.
Many people relate the growing presence and positive portrayal of the Q+ community in television to the gradually changing ideals of America. Many television writers have attempted to tackle the issue of gay rights and in doing so, they have helped to change the national narrative.
Thanks to that, we now have gay shows featuring gay characters who are everything from superheroes to prisoners to stay at home dads. Check out this list of gay and lesbian TV shows and vote up the series you think are the best current TV shows with gay characters.

You can also watch many of these best gay anime on Crunchyroll, Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime.

Let’s hear it for the big boys! It’s no secret that representation in media is important, which is exactly why POOR US’s main protagonist Tanner Maxwell is so refreshing! Confident, powerful and sassy – Tanner is a plus size gay character that breaks the mold.
“I wrote POOR US because Hollywood wasn’t writing for my character type,” says Jeremy Dozier – writer, producer and star of the award-winning POOR US. “Every role I auditioned for either centered around weight in some way or was Security Guard #4. I wanted more. It’s about time big boys get a character that they can root for and see themselves in; one that isn’t ashamed of their body or sexuality.”
Dozier’s award-winning role (Dozier was named Best Actor at the LA Shorts Awards earlier this month) is boundary pushing. “I wanted to play a confident, powerful fat gay character; something rarely, if ever, seen,” says Dozier. “Growing up, I don’t remember seeing myself represented in media. If I had, coming out, coming to terms with my body and figuring out where I fit in in gay culture would have been easier.”
The brainchild of openly gay actor/comedian Jeremy Dozier (Dirty Girl, iCarly), POOR US follows the story of two gay, fraternal twin brothers as they cope with being cut off by their filthy-rich father and try to rebuild their lives in hell, or as it’s better know: Van Nuys. Think Broad City meets Schitt’s Creek, but gayer.

Web series are the way of the future and I am glad I stumbled across this one. Not only is it set in the most glorious of cities on earth, it features some amazing acting from a supremely talented cast, some emotional and surprising plot twists, and some deep and abiding humor. Sure, sometimes it seems a bit over the top – and thank god – what good gay doesn’t like a bit of melodrama! C’mon, we thrive on it as a people!Five friends in NYC live their lives as best they can, and even though some of the plots are disconnected from each other (and let’s be honest, isn’t that how real life is?), they all come together, because that’s how we survive: by finding humor in tragedy, finding comfort from friends? Eagerly awaiting season 2 — and will absolutely watch anything any of this incredible ensemble are in in the future.

I think they went more for budget and mainstream exposure than audience size and so happens the color-less still get more exposure in these days and times…no shade. just truth.
There is a series called Freefall on YouTube. Lamont Pierre, Geno Brooks and the rest of the BOA collective have put together an entertaining urban series.
Production quality is great for most episodes. The situations make the episodes interesting, but I have to admit, there is a slight disconnect in the delivery of some lines.
Overall though, it’s a great series. It ventures outside of the gay comedy and gay-queen-centered shows often found on TV and on web.
