Lack of gay characters and gay romance options

Just reminding everyone please keep the conversation civil or the thread will be locked.

They’re not gonna cater to less than 2% of the population unless they’re trying to seem diverse.

How do you know P5 has no gay characters? Did the game explore every single character’s sexual life so that you’re that sure they are all straight? Or does a character have to shout his gayness from the rooftops and constantly want to bang the main character (like in tasteless Bioware games) for it to count?

.. Atlus(or just everyone) obligated to include LGBT representation now? Is this just how things are going to be from now on in the world? I know it’s nice to have it, but I don’t think it should be such a priority that you feel bitter when it’s not there.

Also, let them approach their themes however they want to. If they include a gay character as an outcast, that means they have to leave out another kind of outcast to make room. I think it’s more interesting to see the kinds of people that aren’t constantly being shoved in my face in everyday society.

ALSO also, is Atlus supposed to be building on the topic of homosexuality with each and every game? They don’t need to touch the same subject every single time.

Still waiting for persona MC to be a person of color.. Hm.. <_<;

Everyone makes Asians out to be Schrodinger’s POC, I s2g

id rather have a solid game and a solid story than including every single facet.

people already upset no female mc and really? I come here to play persona. not a depiction of perfect pc life in 2017

Including a gay option, a thing that P2 already did = Perfect PC life 2017.

Statistically speaking, should most games have a gay person? Should we be calling out Atlus for no black playable characters in the game either?

I’m super accepting of LGBTQ and I can understand being frustrated, but I guess not every game can have every minority? Plus, would it be right to just add a gay option? After all, being gay isn’t a choice right? (kidding)

I don’t really understand the argument of ‚I support LGBT but I don’t like it being forced it into the story when it’s not natural‘, like… is a talking cat natural and statistically probable? The game’s main story is about a ~cognitive world~, but when it comes to one party member being gay or the main character falling in love with more than one gender, that’s when suspension of disbelief is broken and we have to be completely realistic?

I think having a gay character would make sense for a Persona game especially since there is a lot of societal commentary in the series. A gay character would have fit particularly well with the theme of P5 (being some sort of outsider). And they are in a large city, which tend to have larger concentrations of LGBTQ people than other places.

Black characters would be completely different; there are very few black people in Japan so including them in a video game set there doesn’t make much sense.

I don’t agree with including minorities for the sake of it but I do find it odd when they aren’t included and it seems like they would make sense to be.

Statistically speaking it’s utter bullshit to ask for every minority group/sexual orientation/whatever to be represented. I think it’s fair to ask, but to bitch when you don’t get your LGBTQXYZ-transjewish-attack helicopter representation is pointless.

That aside, realistically speaking, Japan devs really don’t give two fucks about gays and giving them romance options. I doubt the thought even crossed their minds during development. This game is built for Japanese audiences first, we’ve always been an afterthought.

To be fair there’s no reason for Atlus to make the MC gay or bi to please a small minority of could’ve just went with the P3P route and gave us the option to have a female protag that way they can keep both sides happy which would’ve been nice.

I’m only around 50 hours in (4th Palace) but my head canon is that Yusuke is gay, or at least bi.

New Release: THE SHELTERING TREE by J.R. Lawrie

The heart of Alastair Harding’s life is duty. Becoming the first gay chief of the Metropolitan police has required certain sacrifices, but Alastair made them willingly. If his life now lacks human connections, he can’t exactly complain—and it’s a little too late for regrets.

Jay Fieldhouse knows all about sacrifice, too. Brought to London for his own safety by witness protection, Jay’s grassroots charity works day and night to save vulnerable kids from a life of crime. But getting close to other people is tough when no one really knows who you are.

When he meets Alastair one night at a charity event, Jay is intrigued by his glimpse of a gentle soul beneath the commissioner’s uniform. The two men decide to run their lonely paths side by side for a while—after all, life is short and good sex is hard to come by.

Then the shadows of the past begin to stir, and the words which go unsaid might be Jay and Alastair’s undoing.

The Sheltering Tree is J.R. Lawrie’s first full length novel, following her beloved debut anthology, Let Your Heart Be Light.

… Stoic Jun and irrepressible Theo must work together to break the code before their time is up. Falling into bed together is effortless, but their growing connection wasn’t in the plan. Theo charms his way beneath Jun’s skin with every nonsensical move he makes. Jun must decide if he can make room in his harsh, goal-driven life for the unpredictable force of love. Theo begins their journey as a lighthearted adventure—until he cracks Jun’s tough facade to reveal the hero within. Theo must decide if he can risk his battered heart when Jun is risking everything.

In the lawless depths of space, can two captive hearts set each other free?

I excited to bring you , the sixth (!) book in the Browerton series. (But like all of them, it can be read as a standalone.) Before I prattle one, let’s get to the good stuff:

There are not enough fire emojis for this cover model. I took one look into his penetrating gaze and

Ever since writing Nathan in Out of This World, I wanted to send him on his own journey to redeem his terrible behavior. I absolutely love fish-out-of-water and mistaken identity tropes (Overboard, While You Were Sleeping, and Schitt’s Creek were big inspirations, as was the excellent gay farming film God’s Own Country).

I thought about the most polar opposite place I could send him. Cut to Nathan on a sheep farm at the edge of the world. New Zealand is on my bucket list of places to visit, so I was able to live a little bit vicariously through him.

Outside Looking In is both hilarious and heartwarming. Some of Nathan’s banter with Liam, aka Farmer Tight-ass, made me laugh out loud, while other parts of it got me a little choked up. If you are a fan of opposites attract and forced proximity tropes, slow burn romance, characters crawling out of the darkness, Golden Girls references, and earth-shattering sex, then check out Outside Looking In.

Let me know what you think about the book and the cover in the comments below.

The Big Change Coming to M/M Romance

A recent study has been buzzing around the internet claiming that a lot of straight college coeds are having a lot of not-so-straight sexual encounters. Of the college guys surveyed in the study, conducted by Dr. Arielle Kuperberg of UNC Greenboro and Dr. Alicia Walker of Missouri State, one in eight of the respondents whose last encounter was with a man identify as heterosexual. For women, that percentage jumped to one in four.

For all we know, the percentages of straight guys having a same-sex encounter could be the same as it was in 1958. Our grandparents pushed the beds together much more than we like to think. But back then, it would’ve been extremely doubtful that a straight guy would admit to fooling around with another guy, not even to a researcher. In addition to strict social mores, the vocabulary didn’t exist to verbalize what was going on. You were either straight or banished from society. Hookups would be something that had to be shrouded in secrecy, and the guys would consider themselves ardently heterosexual. Same-sex encounters would be fervently compartmentalized. It will shock you how much it never happened.

Straight kids today, even gay and bi kids, don’t view sexuality so rigidly. They may identify as heterosexual, but their definition of heterosexuality may be different than yours or mine. It’s not an all-or-nothing deal for them. Naturally, this is a generalization, as there are puhlenty of kids and young adults who still have rigid, binary, and bigoted mindsets passed down by their parents. (exhibit A, the phrase “no homo.”) But generally, things are moving in a more fluid direction, with more kids identifying as gay, bi, trans, genderqueer, etc.

Occasionally, romance lovers face obstacles such as finances, physical illness, various forms of discrimination, psychological restraints or family that threaten to break their union of love. Romantic films serve as great escapes and fantasies for viewers, especially if the two people finally overcome their difficulties, declare their love, and experience life „happily ever after“, implied by a reunion and final kiss. In romantic television series, the development of such romantic relationships may play out over many episodes, and different characters may become intertwined in different romantic arcs.

Will Sk8 the Infinity Become a Gay Romance?

Sk8 the Infinity is the latest homoerotic hit from director Hiroko Utsumi, but will it go beyond queerbaiting and become a gay romance?

Sk8 the Infinity is the latest anime and first original series by director Hiroko Utsumi. While she’s been working as an animator since the mid-2000s on shows like Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Utsumi gained a reputation over the last decade for directing Free! and Banana Fish.

Free! had plenty of homoeroticism but no canonical romance between its athletic leads, whereas Banana Fish featured multiple canon queer characters. Three episodes in, whether Sk8 the Infinity fall into Free!’s queerbaiting patterns or Banana Fish’s canon queerness remains uncertain.

19. The Thing About Harry (2020)

Peter Paige‘s delicately radical Freeform original takes the comfort of Hallmark and Lifetime romance movies we love as the framework for a modern LGBTQ classic.  Jake Borelli and Niko Terho star as high-school rivals reunited in young adulthood—after they’ve both come out, opening the door for romance. It’s well-acted, warm and insightfully written— with surprising emotional punch. Ironically, the comfort-food foundation is what makes it feel edgy and so savory.

9. Love, Simon (2018)

You may never find a film more quietly revolutionary than this, the first-ever Hollywood studio-released picture centered on a gay teen. You’ll also be hard-pressed to find a movie that’s sweeter–like, honestly genuinely sweet, nothing saccharine or phony about it. Seventeen-year-old Simon Spier (Nick Robinson)’s coming-out story generated a coveted A+ CinemaScore from test audiences, and in its way, it’s already an all-timer. Coming out is never easy, and it’s not an overstatement to say Greg Berlanti‘s accessible, often hilarious movie about it can change and even save lives.

7. Stranger by the Lake (2008)

Perhaps the darkest film on this list (it’s probably even darker than The Favourite because there are some  slayings)–but too glorious to skip over, this French suspense yarn is set at an eerily quiet cruising ground and nude beach. Its appeal isn’t that far removed from Twilight, only it’s much smarter. At the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, Alain Guiraudie won Best Director, and L’Inconnu du lac also won the Queer Palm. The film features graphic sex scenes, some filmed with body doubles. Stranger by the Lake has so much on its brain that it would be entirely reductive to just label it a “gay movie.”

Lycan – Magical Misconduct

Ok so anyone who knows me knows that I am in love with the ITV show “Emmerdale” loved Robron, but I was in it for Bartsy. Cause Aaron and Adam make a much healthier couple than Aaron and “I killed Katie” Robert. Anyway years later I had the idea for a werewolf fantasy book called “Lycan”. Inspired by Adam Thomas and Danny Miller. The story of a 350 year old Sovereign of all the United Kingdom’s supernaturals and a strange little grumpy man with mismatched body parts is the premise. Let’s be real here, I just love British men and gay love.

To the point that I contacted the woman I have working on the art for my fiction. And commissioned two images of the mains with the likenesses of those actors. Cause I legit am a fan of Bartsy but know I can’t write fan fic lol. (I do commend anyone who can write it! Y’all are such great writers)

So “Magical Misconduct” is the short story from that book where the two mains admit their feelings for each other. Here are some scenes from it

Chapter 1

The smell of a fruity Bolognese sauce caught Marshall’s nose as he entered the kitchen. Only one thing ever smelled this good at the studio: Ryan’s lunch. His wife had some serious chops in the kitchen and sometimes Marshall was a little jealous, he could admit. Even when he had still been married to a wife she had never cooked this good and nowadays, well, his current boyfriend was no luck either. He had mastered the skill of burning a pot of water but that was about it. Sneakily Marshall took a fork out of the drawer and tiptoed over to the table as silently as possible. A slow lick over his lips, soon he’d have a great meal to feast on.

Ryan sat at his usual spot, the back towards the door to not get distracted by the commotion in the rest of the kitchen. Denaun sat with him and munched away on his own lunch, an inquisitive look rested on Marshall.

Who put his index finger against his lips, gesturing for his friend to not say a peep. This was a delicate situation, Marshall had to stalk very close and snatch away his prey in a quick, swift motion. Ryan was very protective of his food and his big, strong hands …

Sk8 the Infinity Sets Up Multiple Queer-Coded Characters

At the very least, Sk8 the Infinity’s first three episodes introduce multiple characters who defy gender norms and could be considered queer-coded. Shadow, a skater who dresses like a reject from the band KISS, undergoes a Sailor Moon-inspired magical girl transformation in one of the bumpers. The enigmatic Cherry Blossom is a feminine man whose chemistry with fellow skater Joe borders on tsundere-like. At the end of the third episode, potential big bad Adam tries to caress the secondary protagonist Langa’s leg.

The show’s primary focus, and the big question in regards to LGBTQ representation, is the relationship between Reki and Langa, the two central characters. Reki is a skateboarding enthusiast who has loved the sport his whole life, while Langa, a transfer student from Canada, is an experienced snowboarder learning to skateboard for the first time. Langa is a socially awkward character who at times seems reserved and under-expressive, while Reki is a puppy-dog of a human being who jumps with excitement when discussing skateboarding.

The two characters become incredibly fast friends, with Reki teaching Langa how to skate and the techniques of the sport. While they are clearly best friends immediately, there’s a closeness between them that might border on romantic attraction. The two lays next to one another, are physically affectionate, and stare lovingly at one another. The end of the first episode culminates with Reki watching Langa skate with his eyes wide and his face blushing.

It’s uncertain whether or not Reki admires Langa’s snowboarding-skateboarding technique or Langa himself. Langa, meanwhile, is usually incredibly reserved but shows an emotional range to Reki in private that he doesn’t even reveal to his mother. It’s incredibly clear that Langa is opening up fast to Reki.

Is Sk8 the Infinity Queer or Just Queerbaiting?

At the present time, there is no overt sign that Sk8 the Infinity is preparing a same-sex romance. However, it’s that very lack of over signs that makes any potential queerness in Sk8 the Infinity feel more sincere and less like queerbaiting. Free! often queerbaited its audience by heavily teasing same-sex relationships without actually following through. All the homoeroticism ultimately became frustrating to many fans when, over and over, the characters ended up engaging in heteronormative behavior. If you tease something hard enough and don’t deliver it, then it like the writers are baiting for attention.

If Sk8 the Infinity can be compared to anything at this stage, it’s is well known for being ultimately a queer love story, overt romance wasn’t implied until Episode 6, and even overt fan service scenes were kept to a minimum early on (the bathhouse scene aside). Sk8 the Infinity can go either way at this point, but the trajectory of Reki and Langa’s relationship feels similar to Yuri and Victor’s thus far.

It can swerve into a gay romance or keep going straight down its path of close best friends. However, the odds seem to be in the favor of a Reki-Langa romantic endgame for the series.

I believe it’s been confirmed that one of the new male NPCs will be available for romancing as a male PC, but not yet which one it is.

So, @ Dave, how about that f/f romance option you said was coming sooner rather than later?

@Jalily The current plan doesn’t lend itself to moving that character forward, but it won’t be very long after BGEE that you get a chance to meet her. Still, if another opportunity arises and it makes sense for the character, I’ll have your note in mind.

Changing all female NPC’s to males and male NPC’s to females should do the trick. Makes perfectly sense as well. Just take Jaheira and Khalid as an example.

Geeze, lots of over sensitive gay apologists in this thread. The guy just said he doesn’t want gays in his does every game now days have to have a gay romance? I remember Dragon Age 2 where 90% of the characters were bisexual. Poor writing anyone? It irked me so much it affected my enjoyment of the game.

There is love between the men as they grow to be close friends and rely on each other, but their relationship never progresses further (in this movie at least)The manga had some short „sequels“ that are more explicit and explore the romance between them.

When nineteen year old Cody Bradbury gets his hands on an invitation to the hottest party of the year, he doesn’t plan to let anything stand in his way of attending. With a stolen invitation and fake identification, he sneaks into the gay club owned by his uncle during the annual Halloween bash with the intention of checking out the action and possibly losing his long-despised cherry.

He’s so enamored of the older man that he doesn’t think twice when Dante wants to hook up. He can think of only one way to find out and he plans to make it an experience neither of them will ever forget.

This second edition includes the bonus follow-up novella, Reckless Behavior.

Left Behind by Douglas Black #newgayromance

Left Behind is an MM erotic romance set in the Scottish Highlands. It is the first book in my new Abducted Hearts series that is being released as part of Loose Id Publishing’s Three for the Holidays range. Book Two, Highland Gathering, is coming soon and the final installment, Haunted Heart will release in February!

Faced with the prospect of spending Christmas alone with his daughter, Havana, in the house he used to share with his husband, widower Stewart Robertson heads north to a campsite in Glen Coe in the Scottish Highlands. There, he meets Gary James, an American parapsychologist with beliefs very different to Stewart’s own.

The sexual attraction is instantaneous, and overwhelming, and when Gary asks Stewart to spend Christmas with him and his friends in Fort William, Stewart agrees. Knowing next to nothing about each other, the two quickly start a physical relationship.

Stewart, emotional, angry and still reeling from the recent death of his husband, doesn’t know if he’s ready to start dating again, but he can’t deny that he wants Gary, a man who is keeping a secret that threatens to derail any chance of a happy ending before they even get started.

“If we’re going,” Stewart said after Lucas finished explaining his plan, “you need to go tell your dad.”

“Yep. He doesn’t even know I’m here with you. You’ll need to tell him.”

That threw Stewart off his stride. He fought the urge to roll his eyes. “Who are you camping with?”

“Then yes, it would be easier to tell your uncle. I thought he was your dad.”

Right. So not much point calling him, then, Stewart thought. He never had been good at understanding the way children’s minds worked.

Instead of admitting that, Stewart gestured for Lucas to go. He took Havana inside to get ready, and when he emerged from the kata, Lucas’s uncle was taking up far too much room on the decking outside, armed with two camping chairs and a cooler.

“Snacks,” he said in an American accent Stewart didn’t even try to place. He flashed Stewart a blinding smile, his height forcing Stewart to look up at him.

He transferred the cooler and folded camping chairs into one hand before extending the free one for Stewart to shake. Stewart did and earned another of those jolts of attraction. It was worse the second time around, with the skin contact and that dark, intense gaze on him. The man’s hands were big, his grip strong, but his skin was soft. Warm. Stewart cleared his throat.

Stewart knew he was staring, not letting go of Gary’s hand. The man’s height and build and presence made Stewart feel like he was caught in a tractor beam, frozen in place and rendered incapable of movement or speech. But inside, Stewart’s mind was racing a million miles an hour. He was chastising himself in no uncertain terms for behaving as he was. For feeling the way he was. For even noticing how much stronger Gary was compared to him, and for remembering Gary naked earlier that morning and wishing he had stayed longer.

Already it felt like an imperfect memory. Hairy chest, muscular body, impressive cock. He was mad at himself for focusing on the latter. For immediately fixating on how much he wanted to fuck. Get fucked. Even just be held in strong arms, feel that smile directed at him from someone who clearly thought there was still stuff worth smiling about. Because it didn’t seem to matter how much time Stewart spent with Havana, how tightly he hugged her, and how much he worried about her, he was lonely. So lonely, sometimes he wondered if he was going to die from it. And that was a drama-queen thought by anyone’s standard, but sometimes it was true. It was like the pain. A seemingly endless state from which there was no escape.

“Now, back in the States, this is the point where the other person gives their name.”

Stewart crashed back to reality in time to jerk his hand out of Gary’s. He took a deep breath. This is the part where you decide I’m batshit crazy and should in no way be allowed near either you or your son. Nephew. Whatever.

“Stewart,” he managed. “Sorry, my brain’s away with the fairies.” Wasn’t that the truth?

Gary flashed him another smile, and Stewart had to take a step back. He shook his head, forced a laugh, then said, “I haven’t been sleeping. Hence coming here to get away from it all, but that hasn’t worked either. My head’s not in the game. This is Havana. Your nephew’s been doing a great job keeping her entertained all morning.”

“So I’ve been told.” Gary turned his attention to Havana, allowing Stewart the opportunity to give the man another once-over.

Baggy waterproof trousers, expensive walking boots, and a quality branded outdoor jacket. Gary looked every inch like he belonged in the great outdoors, with the exception of the black T-shirt with luminous green alien face and the writing The Truth is Out There picked out in silver underneath. People tended to wear their oldest, least-favorite clothes when there was a chance of them getting muddy, Stewart reasoned. He turned his thoughts back to Gary, who was calling Havana a little lady and offering her a bow.

“I hear we’re off to do some exploring by the river, maybe see if we can rent some bikes?” Gary said when he straightened.

The bikes were a new addition to the plan. It seemed Lucas made things up as he went along. Or waited until he had initial approval before adding additional details.

Born and raised in bonnie Scotland, Douglas Black writes contemporary MM erotic romance. Welcome to your fantasy.

So what does this mean for M/M Romance?

This got me thinking about the gay romance genre, which in some ways seems sexually rigid in comparison. It’s been defined by a few standard tropes. One of the most popular is Gay For You, i.e. the straight guy who realizes he’s gay after hooking up then falling in love with a gay guy. I have experience writing about this.

There’s been pushback against this trope in the community, arguing that it’s bi erasure and incorrectly presents bisexuality as a bridge between Straight Land and Gay Island. I wonder if the Gay For You trope will continue to exist in a world with heterosexual men who are more open to experimentation and who are more open about being open to it. Younger generations of readers who are new to the M/M genre may not embrace the trope. I don’t see Gay for You stories going away permanently, though. There will always be an audience for the alpha straight guy turning gay, the frat brothers hooking up on a drunken evening.

But at the same time, we could begin to see gay romance novels where nobody actually identifies as gay. It’ll still be M/M because it’ll show two guys falling in love, but they could be bisexual or genderfluid or maybe they’ll continue to identify as straight even after having sex and beginning to fall in love. (Kudos to the writer who can pull that off.)

I’m excited to see this kind of content included in the gay romance genre, living side-by-side with the classic tropes, showing the full spectrum of sexuality as it exists in the twenty-first century.

Works that have a same-sex and/or transgender romance as a major theme.

In the West, gay and lesbian romances aimed at LGBT readers have existed as a publishing niche since the 1950s, but are still relatively obscure (and Sturgeon’s Law and The Theorem of Narrow Interests applies to what can be found). Most broadly-known Western same-sex and LGBT romances are aimed at general audiences and have a tendency to be tragic. Another Western genre, M/M romance, features male love interests but is written primarily by women for women and has a tendency to go to the opposite extreme.

In Japanese media, these have more well-defined genre expectations and usually fall into the Bara (m/m romance for gay/bi men), and Yuri Genre (f/f romance generally, although there is a separation between works for men, for women in general, and for lesbians in specific).

A sub-category of Queer Media. See also Gay Option, which may overlap with this trope when the story is built around the romance as opposed to the romance being a sidequest.
