12 Best Gay Dating Apps & Sites For Relationships

Dating is not exclusive to homosexual community, but most of the online dating sites are focussed more on the basic heterosexual relationships which makes it difficult for the queer community. That being said, this problem has not been left without a solution and now there are a lot of apps and sites for queer people to have their fair share of guys and girls as they wish and a lot of platforms dedicated exclusively to them.

When it comes to online gay dating sites and apps, Grindr and Scruff dominate the market with their huge popularity and user base but they are not the only options that you have out there. Here is a rundown of some genuine and working gay dating apps for queer men.

The best dating apps for gay users, since meeting people IRL is hellish

Most people have at least one horror story about online dating. It’s a rite of passage that single people love to hate.

But the horror stories look a little different for members of the LGBTQ community. On top of the classic awkward Hinge date anecdotes and screenshots of a corny bio seeping with secondhand embarrassment, gay singles deal with all sorts of alienating interactions. Baseless questioning of sexual history, harassment, and fetishization — most of it coming from cis straight people who shouldn’t have popped up in your feed in the first place — don’t exactly give one butterflies.

Still, dating apps have become crucial means of introduction for gay folks looking to settle down. A 2019 Stanford study and 2020 Pew Research survey found that meeting online has become the most popular way for U.S. couples to connect — especially for gay couples, of which 28% met their current partner online (versus 11% of straight couples).

But the Pew survey also dredged up those ugly experiences with harassment. This could be where options that bar heterosexual users, like HER and Grindr, come in. Their perfectly-tailored environments are so well-known in the gay community that they’re essentially in a league of their own.

That’s not to say that they’re in the queer dating app market alone. Apps like Zoe, Taimi, and Scruff exist. But their plateauing popularity can be attributed to similar complaints: too many scam profiles and too few legitimate users (ones within a reasonable distance to plan a date, anyway). Chappy was a promising app for gay men that shut down just as it was gaining serious traction.

And at the end of the day, „everyone“ apps are simply where masses of queer users are. Keeping Tinder on the back burner isn’t just a straight people thing, especially for those who live in less-populated areas where Grindr and HER have slim pickings. Plus, some mainstream apps do deserve credit for the steps they’ve taken to create a more inclusive atmosphere. Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge now offer lots of sexual orientation and gender identity options. OkCupid gets kudos for making that change years ago, as well as making social justice a core part of compatibility scoring — which kind of self-curates the type of people on the app.

If you’re LGBTQ and hate leaving your home, you’re not alone. Here are the best dating apps and sites that’ll maximize your opportunities while minimizing your human contact. Bless. (For the best dating apps specifically for lesbians, go here.)

The best apps for gay dating, gay sex and gay romance

If you’re gay, single and ready to mingle then there’s a world of resources out there, even if physical contact is still not on the cards. We take you through the gay dating app for every need

So your gay ass is looking for love. Or sex. Love or sex. Maybe both. Probably not neither, if you’re here, because you’ve come to an article about the best gay dating apps.

Gay dating apps are a scourge. They’re also a necessity. Guess what: that’s all technology. Homosexuality does not make you worse, or better, than the conveniences of modern society. The thing is, they do differ from the standard offerings, even when you are on the standard offerings: the clandestine nature of gay love and a decade of Grindr mean even in the most mundane of places we find a way to switch it up. It’s a wilderness out there and it can be terrifying if not demeaning.

We’re also dealing with a time where a community, built on nightlife and safe spaces, is having to stick around at home: it might be that gay dating apps are now your predominant way of engaging with the community. The stakes are higher, the needs different. It’s never been a weirder time to be trying to figure out gay dating apps, especially now Grindr is becoming a place for conversations with men you may not get to touch for months.

Take it from a sodomite who knows: I’ve dated my way across multiple continents, I’ve topped, I’ve bottomed, I’ve got into inadvisable threesomes, I’ve navigated saying no to the HnH crowd, I’ve lost ones that should have been LTRs and I’ve had LTRs with people I should avoid. I have met some of the most amazing men in my life on apps, and also some of the worst. That being said, some of the biggest dirtbags I’ve ever let into my bed were people I met in cafés and bars (and also some of the best men in the world). Nowhere is safe, nowhere is perfect, nowhere is all bad. No one is going to just show up on your doorstep: if you want monogamy, or polyamory, you’re going to have to work for it.

No one is going to just show up on your doorstep: if you want monogamy, or polyamory, you’re going to have to work for it

But depending on what you’re looking for, and where you are in the whole rigmarole, will change your experience. So here is a guide to the best dating apps out there for love, lust and everything in between.

The best LGBTQ dating apps for Android and iOS

More of us are meeting our partners online than ever before, according to a 2020 survey by Pew Research, and when it comes to gay couples, this is even more common — in fact, 28% of those surveyed met their current squeeze online. Sadly, many LGBTQ online daters have horror stories to share of harassment or bullying online. Over half say they have received a sexually explicit image or message they didn’t ask for — compared to 32% of straight online daters — and 41% have experienced being called an offensive name on dating sites or apps. So when you’re hunting for a safe, inclusive space to date, how do you know which apps to choose?

There’s no need to worry, as we’ve selected some of the best LGBTQ dating apps for Android and iOS. Learning more about the different features of these apps will help you find an app that corresponds to the kind of online dating experience you would like to have.

An Honest Review of Gay Dating Apps

I’ve been gay and off-and-on single for too many years to count, so of course I’ve used every possible gay app under the sun. To help you avoid some of the many dating mistakes I’ve made, here’s an honest list of all the various gay dating & hookup apps that I’ve used – my personal experience and reviews of the best (and worst) gay apps.

Everyone has an opinion on the gay apps. They’ve become so ubiquitous and ingrained in our popular culture, they’re impossible to resist. I remember the first time I downloaded Grindr—shortly after it was released. Once The New York Times writers discovered it, the app world seemed to explode with location-based dating apps.

Gay dating wasn’t easy for a long time. I was lucky enough to grow up & come out during the iPhone generation when thousands of new types of apps seemed to be released every day. And the gays were instrumental to that digital boom.

The gay apps have fundamentally changed dating—for E V E R Y O N E, the gays, the straights. It changed LGBTQ nightlife, how we make friends & meet others. Of course there are positives and negatives. AA lot has been said about how gayborhoods around the world have changes; the fact that gay bars and clubs are closing with more frequency because of the changing community. Is it the fault of dating apps and the fact most of us meet online—rather than in a gay club?

Certainly that’s had an effect on the LGBTQ community, but so many of these gay apps have also helped to open up the world at large. It’s hard to fault them entirely for the demise of our community spaces, because I do passionately believe social media has helped to connect us in more meaningful and powerful ways.

And just as its probably kept us at home more often, it’s also allowed us to travel more freely and openly.

Personally, I’ve found gay apps to be extremely useful in making new connections in otherwise challenging situations. I’ve grown up on social media and that’s probably affected how I see (and use) online dating. I don’t think I’ve ever been afraid to meet strangers from the internet—it’s thrilling, exciting, interesting, and even when it’s not: it’s a good story.

So, here’s my honest and complete review of all the gay apps I’ve used. In no particular order:

International Gay Dating Sites

Gay dating may prove to be a bit of a hassle, especially when you live in a country with citizens that still hold a lot of prejudice when it comes to same-sex relationships. Perhaps the most straightforward way to find love is via dating platforms online.

How to Choose an Online Gay Community

When you decide to become a member of an online gay community and sign up for one of the apps, first you need to read the membership rules. Also, take a look at the privacy policy and terms of service. As usual, the sign-up process takes only a few minutes and is easy. You can always contact the support team if you have any questions.

You can test and create accounts in several dating apps to find the best choice. Pay attention to real people’s feedbacks, geolocation of users, web-design, and other details which will help you choose a suitable app for you.

First of all, you should find an LGBTQI+ online community where members have similar goals to yours. Maybe it will be a hookup app where successful men want to spend their free time with cute boys to have one-night-sex. And meanwhile, ambitious teens are looking for an experienced mentor or Sugar Daddy with a high amount of money in his current account. Perhaps you need a gay dude for fun and a good friend with a lifestyle like yours, or maybe you are looking for long-term relationships. In this case, pay attention to the 5 best gay dating apps, which have a lot of positive feedback from real people.

Gay Dating Apps & Gay Matchmaking

If you’re 100% Twink, Bear, Daddy, or Jock and know what you need, then you can find a boyfriend or sexual partner at online dating apps. And if you’re not sure who you are yet and who you need, it’ s better to use a matchmaking & dating expert.

1. Grindr

We all knew we would start here. Miss thing is the standard, the OG, the black monolith that appeared before the chimps in 2001: A Space Odyssey and changed the face of man. Except in this case, all the primates are yelling “Got a dick pic!? Got a dick pic!?”

Grindr sets up the basic template of how all gay dating is or isn’t: everything is reactive to Grindr whether it wants to be or not, so if you like or dislike this app is going to formulate where you go from here. Grindr, fundamentally, is based around location: men appear in order of descending proximity and everything else goes from there. You can filter by various categories, but fundamentally, the nearer they are the more you will see them. Get used to seeing the same 30 faces and get used to running into them at Waitrose every Saturday, even after they turned you down.

The most blessed and cursed thing about Grindr is – because it’s so ubiquitous – that it really is a broad church. Here you will find the fetishists just trying to indulge their kink (totally fine!) the couples looking for a third (also fine!), the people trying to organise chemsex parties (slightly less fine!), the escorts trying to find clientele (should be more fine!), the straight boys without a pic on the hunt or dick (a very thorny thicket!) and maybe, just maybe, a G B or T person looking for a hook-up or a date.

Grindr has improved a lot over the years: you now have the ability to post multiple pictures, alert someone if you’re into them without having to say a word, and actually get bloody notifications without paying.

There are also some interesting additions of recent, including the fact profiles now allow you to mention your preferences about being sent, or receiving, NSFW. You can engage in all the usual conversational beats – “Hey, wuu2?”, “Got pix?”, “Top or btm?”, “Host or travel?”, “Into smells?” – or you can try to play it a bit different. No shade, all T: Grindr is the most economical and ergonomic of dating platforms and if that’s not your scene – if you’re looking for the nebulous, wibbly-wobbly badinage of human interaction – that’s not what this menu was ever designed for. That being said, you may find some people looking for conversation! That’s not impossible! But don’t judge people if that’s not why they’re here: Grindr has a very utilitarian role to play and it does it well. Nobody came into the digital world looking for the sexual prude police. Judge nobody and dox no one.

3. Chappy

Known for: allowing you to filter out men based on your intentions

When I used Chappy back in the day, its main sell was the sliding scale at its top: slide in one direction and you could filter for men looking for “mr right”. Sliding the toggle in the other direction got you “mr right now”. As it was new, and late to the party, it meant that people flocking to the app were ones tired of the current market and looking for something new. I had a pretty high ratio of good dates, anecdotally. The scale has changed what it allows you to filter between and they’re still trying to settle on what exactly the two poles will be, but it can be useful for those who want – without blocking account after account – a way of find people who are looking for exactly the same outcome.

It’s from the people behind Bumble (and other apps) and was born out of a desire to provide an alternative to the Grindr-centric marketplace. It’s got, probably, a smaller pool, but a pool that has had enough of the rest of the options out there and is looking for something different. If that’s been your experience so far, you’ll probably find someone like-minded there.

Worth noting: as part of the Badoo and Bumble family, Chappy also has video dating services available for users if you want to meet the people you speak to but are still not comfortable meeting in person.

5. Surge

Surge is… I mean, it’s… what is Surge? It’s… Well, it’s the exact same interface as Tinder, but for gay men. But here’s the thing: have you ever heard of Surge? Who is using Surge? What are people getting from this app? If you really enjoy the ability to swipe left and right because the gamification of human sexuality is a real thrill for you, Surge gives you all you want and more. Otherwise, there’s nothing to suggest this app is a home to any particular approach to dating, or demographic, that you wouldn’t find on more mainstream apps.

6. Growlr

A dating app specifically for bears, cubs and all men who fancy those aforementioned dad bods. Whether you enjoy the categorisation of gay men’s bodies or not, these apps exist and people use them. If you yourself feel a little bit more body-conscious and want to be in a space where being both sexual and thicc is praised rather than risky, Growlr might be an excellent starting point even if you move on elsewhere.

7. Mr X

Formerly known as “Mister”, Mr X is designed for gay men over the age of 30. It’s not particularly competent, or especially jazzy, and when you get to smaller apps with less known niches it’s often just a smaller pool of the same people you saw on Grindr and Scruff. But Mr X does exist. Since coming back under its new, slightly sci-fi name, Mr X also works in the background to try and find you potential partners who match the type of men you’re already trying to date (a lot of apps keep track of the categories most of the men you’re trying to chirpse belong to: Scruff’s data I often found dangerously illuminating). In that way it’s not dissimilar to Hinge and is also available on desktop as well.

The founder of Mr X, Carl Sandler, also founded Daddyhunt – an app designed for meeting “daddies” – and Knki, an app for people in the fetish community. If either of those happen to be your particular taste, they also might be worth trying.

8. Adam4Adam

Adam4Adam – a long-standing American dating website, predominantly used in the US and yet also sponsoring posts among the European thots I just happen to follow on Instagram – has now moved into the app game as well. Adam4Adam has somewhat garnered a reputation as a place where untoward types would find closeted gay servicemen and public figures and out them. This isn’t the site’s fault, but institutional homophobia’s, but it’s worth mentioning. The site is free and also offers live cams, pornography and a sex shop.

9. Romeo

Known for: being the gay equivalent of the European Union

Otherwise known as PlanetRomeo and GayRomeo, this site and app are both huge in German speaking countries. If you’re in MunichZurich or Vienna, you may have more success using Romeo than other apps. That being said, usage in the UK is low – about 2 per cent of its total user base in 2016 – so it might not be your best domestic bet.

10. Hornet

Known for: keeping gay men in dangerous countries safe

Never heard of Hornet? The likelihood is that you live in a country where homophobia isn’t a criminal offence. Although Hornet exists all over the world, it becomes a saving grace in countries where Grindr is banned or dangerous due to fake profiles being out to catch you and incriminate you (Saudi Arabia, Chechnya, etc, etc). For example, Hornet is the biggest gay dating app in Turkey, where you’re “safe” in Istanbul and Ankara but in danger everywhere else. The thing is that it’s also an app where people are being incredibly discreet due to the same dangers. It’s also not safe to use Hornet in some countries, like Indonesia, where it was banned in 2016, or the UAE.

11. Squirt

Squirt has long been proud of being an uncensored online hub for cruising. It then made the move into a slightly-more-censored dating app, Squirt Mobile. It’s perhaps the most explicit and the most body-focused. If that’s your vibe, this might be the one for you.

13. The straight ones

Known for: being focused more on dating than hook-ups

The apps designed for heterosexuals have slowly but surely also become homes for sodomy, though with something like Bumble the purpose is different: as the fundamental sell is that women can initiate conversation. As we have actively exorcised them from said conversation, it’s basically just Tinder until Bumble decides that only bottoms can say hello.

However, while it might seem that trying to force our square peg into a round hole is the wrong way to go, they are worth the time. It’s less geographical, so the pool is wider and often gay, bisexual and trans users have come here because they want to date more than they want to hook-up, if that’s what you’re after.

In my experience, the apps have more selective and more exasperated user pools as you go from biggest to smallest: Tinder is basically the same as trying to get dick on a bus, Bumble is full of the people who are sick of Tinder’s shit, Hinge is for those who found Bumble too exasperating. I got to the Bumble level and then I found my boyfriend and love of my life, which is a shame in some ways because Hinge seems like a really great app for making strong connections and not a shame in the more important way that I’ve got somebody who I can use as an excuse to get out of social events I don’t want to go to.

  3

Lex

Ever find yourself longing for the uncomplicated days of Craigslist personals? Then opt for Lex, a no-frills app with a healthy dose of ’80s and ’90s nostalgia. Inspired by the personal ads in On Our Backs, the woman-run erotica mag, it takes a simple yet charming approach to dating in the modern age. There are no cheesy selfies, just the opportunity to write an engaging personal ad that will — hopefully — help you meet your match.

The app isn’t just for dating — members have used it to make friends, start a band, and even plan a protest, according to its founder. Give shallow selfie swiping a miss and make a real, meaningful connection, or post in the “Missed Connection” section and you might find yourself getting together with that guy you saw at the farmers market but were too shy to speak to.

The app’s design is minimalist and inclusive, allowing you to choose your pronouns and asking you to agree to its strict rules of conduct for new members before you get started. You can browse the personals or search by keyword — so finding somebody who loves pizza as much as you do is totally achievable — send private messages, and save people’s posts to reply later, when you have more time. All this, and it’s totally free to use.

Surge

Surge is, dare we say, the Tinder for gay dating. It functions similarly to Tinder, with a swipe right to like and left to reject style — there’s even a Power Message option that’s the equivalent of a Super Like. It’s quick to sign up and you can share photos from your camera roll, Facebook, or Instagram to your profile. It’s free too, and you can swipe through potential matches (a limited number each day) and start chatting without paying a penny.

We love that Surge is all about inclusivity, and their motto “No Labels” means that whoever you are, you can be yourself while searching for your ideal match.

If you decide to upgrade to Premium membership, you’ll enjoy access to features like Who Liked Me, as well as Private Mode, where you’re only visible to guys you’ve already liked, the aforementioned Power Message to get you noticed, After-Match Photos, which allows you to upload private photos only visible to your matches, and several other handy features. You can sign up for a one-, three-, or 12-month membership starting at $7 a month.

Tser

Tser claims to be “the best TS and trans dating app for crossdressers and transgender women and men.” A pretty bold claim — but judging by the app’s popularity, it may well be true. Everyone’s welcome on the app, and it’s a safe space to be yourself, whatever your gender identity. It’s free to use and there’s a clean community policy that means no pornography or nudity is allowed.

Getting started involves filling out a few personal details, adding a couple of sentences (or a few paragraphs, if you’ve more to say) about what you’re looking for from the app, and uploading a photo. If we had one criticism during signup, it’s that the photo uploading process is very slow, and sometimes causes the app to crash.

Once you’re in, you can browse profiles and search for transgender singles near you using the filters. You can message matches for free, or start a voice message chat if you prefer to hear their voice. There’s a premium subscription that gives you access to additional features and starts from $13 a month, or you can sign up for three months for $27 or six months for $46.

It’s worth noting that the user base for Tser is still pretty small — but growing by the day — so unless you live in a major city, you may not find many matches near you.

Bumble

Fans of Chappy, the gay dating site that shut down just as it was starting to peak in popularity will be pleased to hear that the app joined forces with Bumble. Bumble is committed to fighting inequality and creating a space for healthy, safe connections across the LGBTQ+ spectrum, so where better to find your match? Traditionally Bumble asked women to make the first move on their app — but when it comes to same-sex matches, either party can make the first move, and the other party has 24 hours to respond and start a chat.

When you first open the app you’re presented with the option to log in with your Facebook account or use a mobile number. You’ll set up your profile, which includes a startling amount of information, including what you’re looking for, what pets you have, and a wide range of sexual orientation and gender identity options. You also get to choose whether to display your gender identity to matches.

A new section called COVID Dating lets you set preferences for dating during the pandemic — for example, whether you’re okay with IRL dating or prefer to date virtually for now, and whether indoors or outdoors dates are your ideal. This will only be displayed to your matches, but it’s definitely a helpful way of gauging what people are open to, without having to ask. You can also connect your Instagram and Spotify to share even more about yourself with potential matches.

Bumble has a huge user base, making it easier to find matches in your area, and it’s free to use — plus the 24-hour time limit to make a connection means you’re less likely to let matches languish and be reshuffled into the deck. The recent addition of in-app voice and video chat functions, as well as the option to send audio notes, gives you plenty of ways to communicate if typing lengthy messages isn’t your thing. You can subscribe to Bumble Boost or Premium from $9 a month to access all of Bumble’s additional features.

Scruff

Scruff allows you to browse through over 15 million profiles from nearby and around the world. Targeted toward men who have, or like, a little scruff, the app gives you options to search for different types of guys. The developers at Scruff have taken lots of steps to make the app more inclusive to everyone in the LGBTQ community, from being the first to include an option for the transgender community to removing the requirement to list an ethnicity when setting up a profile. It’s pretty easy to get started — just create your profile, entering your date of birth and uploading a photo to start matching. Profiles are pretty detailed, but you don’t have to fill everything out upfront. The app operates on a familiar swipe left or right format — but we love that if you can’t decide right now, you can choose “Ask Later” to be shown the guy again tomorrow.

There are loads of cool features to help you connect, like the quiz show, where you can meet new guys and compete for a cash prize, a social calendar of LGBTQ events in your area or worldwide, and Venture, your travel companion that lets you connect with guys in your destination city before you arrive.

Scruff is a free app, but if you want access to more advanced search features, user videos, and message histories, you’ll need to pay $20 a month for Scruff Pro.

Grindr

If you’re tired of dating apps that don’t include the trans and queer communities, Grindr is a perfect solution. As the largest social networking app for gay, bi, trans, and queer people, you won’t be short of choices when looking for a date. The app uses your phone’s location to find other members nearby and sign up is quick and easy – just fill out the form or sign up with your Facebook account.

The app will show you who’s in your area, with large, high-quality pictures, so there are no surprises. Don’t want to message someone right now? Just favorite them to speak to them later. You can even browse other locations, so if you’re moving to a new city or heading away for the weekend, you can meet people before you arrive. If something goes wrong, you can easily report or block accounts – but it’s worth noting free users get a limited number of blocks; a bit of a turnoff.

Grindr is free to use, with limits. With a free account, you can only see 100 profiles in your area – and there are other limits too. To lift them, you can subscribe to Grindr XTRA or Unlimited. XTRA lets you see up to 600 profiles, remove ads, and view who’s online now, plus a range of other upgrades – and it costs $20 per month. For the top-notch experience, Unlimited lets you view unlimited profiles, browse in Incognito mode, and see who’s viewed your profile. It also unlocks expiring photo mode, where images sent expire after 10 seconds – and the handy chat translate feature that lets you communicate with those who don’t speak your language. It’s a pretty hefty investment though at $25 a month.

Tinder

Tinder is not just for straight folks — it lets you swipe right on people across the LGBTQ spectrum. Tinder has also added several new features to make it welcoming to trans and queer users. The More Genders feature gives users a wide variety of gender identity options, while the Traveler Alert feature warns users who have identified themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and/or queer when they enter a country that criminalizes this. This feature ensures your profile won’t be automatically shown when you’re traveling to one of these locations.

You don’t need a Facebook account to sign up for Tinder – but you do have to be older than 18. It’s quick to get started – just write a 500 character bio and add up to six images. There’s the option to link Tinder to your Instagram account too. Adjust your Discovery settings for who can find your profile, from distance and proximity to age range and gender identity.

Tinder operates on the now-familiar swipe right mechanism. You’ll only see a photo, name, and age for each prospective date. Tap on the photo to see some additional information – then swipe right to like them or left to pass. If you’ve fallen instantly in love, you can use a “super like” which the other person will receive instantly. If you both swipe right on each other, you’ll see a screen telling you you’ve matched and inviting you to chat. Tinder also recently adding video chat, great for getting to know each other better before meeting up, or dating during lockdown.

Tinder is free but you get limited swipes each day. To enjoy unlimited swipes and a whole host of other features, you can sign up for Tinder Plus or Tinder Gold. But the best thing about Tinder? It’s one of the most popular dating apps, so you’re more likely to meet someone you like who lives near you than on some of the other apps – and most people on the app actually want to meet up in real-life, whether for a hookup or something more.

Hornet

Boasting over 30 million registered users, Hornet is one of the world’s largest dating apps designed by the gay community for the gay community. Founded in 2011, it’s as much a social network as a dating app, enabling you to create your own news feeds, join groups, and generally immerse yourself in online gay communities. Follow those you’re interested in and see their posts, videos, and photos — and share your own in the news feed. Use the virtual travel feature to explore the world, and engage in interesting conversations about every topic under the sun in curated discussions.

Hornet makes it easy to connect with others for friendship, hookups, and relationships — just use the filters to find the right person, comment on or like their posts, or send a heartstring to make a quick intro. The app takes privacy seriously, and there’s free 24/7 support if you need it.

It’s free to use, although you can subscribe to Premium to enjoy additional features — there’s a fixed period subscription or a rolling monthly one, starting from $10 per month.

Match me if you can!

Prüfe lieber davor, nach was dein Flirtpartner hier wirklich sucht!

Kostenlos, Premium oder VIP – Was kosten Dating-Apps?

The Best, Safest and Most Trusted LGBTQ+ Dating Options

When it comes to online dating, gay men have been fortunate enough to find a space where they’re able to communicate with their dating prospects without judgment from the outside world. Sure, there are public spaces where it can be possible to meet a potential match, but even the gay clubs of today are filled with women who don’t want to be hit on by straight men, and straight guys so comfortable with their sexuality that they don’t mind the go-go dancers. Meaning, gay dating sites have been a welcome innovation.

According to a study conducted by HuffPost on the online dating behavior of 4,000 gay men, over 49 percent of users are between the ages of 25-39. Basically, if you’re a millennial, this is one of the best options for connecting with another gay man in a completely casual way. Of all the men surveyed, 79 percent stated that after using an app, they found a lasting and fulfilling relationship (whether is was a friendship, romance or friends with benefits), while 21 percent said they did not find love, only lust. You can take away that from purely a numbers perspective, men seeking men (or women seeking women!) would benefit from having an online profile.

But online dating, no matter what your sexual orientation, can be challenging. You have to wade through hundreds of filtered pictures of strangers. Then you have to make awkward small talk to see if you’ll even have common interests to talk about once you meet up … and after all that, there is still the coordinating of the first date. It can be exhausting to go through the process time after time in the hopes of finding someone who will make you want to delete your online dating profile forever.

So if you’re looking to meet a new friend (or find the perfect guy to bring home to meet mom), browse below to find a beginner’s guide to online dating as a gay man.

A Guide to Online Gay Dating

Dating as a gay man is not always easy. Depending on where you live, there may not be many other gay men available to date. Additionally, safety remains a concern. There are still areas of the country that are more closed-minded and bigoted, despite progress made in recent years. For this reason, there may be an absence of gay clubs and bars to meet potential dates. Even if you see a cute guy across a restaurant, you may still be hesitant to approach him. After all, what if he is not gay and takes your advance badly?

Online dating can certainly feel safer in these situations. You know right away that you’re speaking to someone gay who is also looking for love. If you’re living someplace where there are not many gay men, online dating can expand your horizons beyond your zip code, providing you with many more options in terms of singles you’d potentially like to meet.

Tips To Choose Gay Dating App

A competent gay dating apps review also opens up additional opportunities to find a partner. Such reviews are usually written by people who have actually tested a large number of applications and can give an adequate assessment of each of them. So don’t ignore this opportunity and use it to the fullest.

How To Choose The Best Gay Hookup App?

And don’t forget about the age limit. For example, if you are young enough and interested in young gay dating apps, it is better to look for a couple on the appropriate platforms. If you are of a solid age, visiting sites for young gays is reasonable only if you are looking for a young partner. In all other cases, it is better to focus on the list of gay dating apps for older men.

And don’t forget that a quality dating app is not only a user-friendly interface. For many users, the issues of anonymity and security remain relevant. Given the fact that gays are persecuted in many countries, it is extremely important for the members of gay minorities to maintain privacy when using such applications.

Main features

With the help of popular gay dating apps, you have the opportunity to solve several problems at once:

Dating and chatting with gays is the main reason why people register on dating sites and apps. Many also do this out of curiosity, as LGBT culture is of some interest to the adherents of traditional family values. As a rule, services don’t impose restrictions on users based on their sexual orientation. So if you’re just interested in being in a real gay community without having sex with men, it also makes sense to register and create an anonymous profile.

Gay dating apps make it easy to find sex or just make new friends to spend time with them. Thanks to such programs, gays can feel like full members of society. Of course, choosing gay hookup apps 2019 and finding a partner for intimate meetings, you should consider many factors. However, a large range of dating software allows you to choose the best solution.

Trying Out International Gay Dating Apps

Finding love on dating platforms is only most effective when there is continuous communication between interested partners. Online, this can prove very easy, especially because of how you can message just about anyone at any time and any place. For this to be possible, famous dating sites have created apps which simplify the online dating experience even more, and all you need is a good internet connection. After choosing whatever website fits your criteria, it is advisable that you get the app to enjoy more of its features, get an even more beautiful layout and the other services the platform offers.

Now on to my favorite dating sites! My list is all premium, and while many of them aren’t strictly limited to gay dating, I have found them to be the most reliable platforms when it comes to finding the perfect lover. On these sites, you have many other members who have similar relationship goals as you — be it that all you want is a fling or even something more longterm like marriage. Remember always to keep an open mind when getting on any of these platforms.

Dating Tips For Gays

Now that you have my top site recommendations, I expect that you start your venture into finding that special person. Dating, whether conventional or not, may prove very difficult. To help, I have penned down a few tips I have found particularly useful for same-sex relationships online.

Conclusion

I have discovered that the unarguably best avenues for gay dating are via online platforms like those I have listed above. That is because you enjoy more opportunities than when going the conventional way. With the thousands of members also searching for the perfect partner, you are sure to find one person that will fit your criteria and even kickstart a longstanding relationship if you so desire. Remember always to be confident and that the tenacious always wins. Goodluck!

1. Grindr

Grindr is a very popular gay dating app with a user base of a whopping 10 million and is the first geosocial gay app, which means that you can find who is nearby who is also using the app and all of these factors have contributed majorly to the success of the app. Though there is a general agreement to the fact that Grindr is one of the best hookup apps. So you can see that if you are looking for a brief encounter, then you might have more success than if you are looking to have a serious relationship as it is more free for all sort of app with little restrictions.

The process is very straightforward with Grindr as all you have to do to get started is to sign-up and set your preferences and you can start scrolling through the guys nearby and that is it but you will be disturbed incessantly by the ads if you are using the free version. Also, since the community and userbase are just huge, you can also expect a lot of unacceptable behaviour on the app mostly because the users have the ability to be very precise about their desires and what they want. But so many users are also a pro because you can be as anonymous as you choose and you will find someone that suits your interests with so many options.

2. Scruff

Scruff is gay dating app for people who are fond of beards and moustache and is generally into the hairy aspects of things. Scruff promotes a more manly and muscular image and the age of the users are a bit on the older side of things as compared to its main rival, the Grindr. All of that being said, Scruff was also launched around the time Grindr was and also has a massive user base of over 12 million people and is extremely popular among the users, most of whom are very masculine and if that isn’t your cup of tea, then maybe you won’t have much luck with the app.

Scruff is also mainly considered a gay hookup app but it does have a match feature that will help you find a suitable match for your dating needs. You can be very specific about your needs, wants and desires and Scruff will cater to them with their powerful search and filter features and they also do not have any spambots which is also a huge plus. Scruff also allows guys to know when you are visiting their region and you can ask locals for tips as well and you can also publish travel agendas, chat with travellers and locals at your destination, or even be a volunteer Scruff ambassador to help other DScruff guys visiting your home city. Scrufff also acts as your social media guide to GBTQ events which are regularly updated and search through these events, RSVP and see who is going and a lot more.

3. GayFriendFinder

Started in the year 1996, GayFriendFinder is one of the pioneers in the online gay dating industry. GayFriendFinder is one of the first dating websites originally created to cater the sexual needs of local gay men. You can filter men by their age, location and the sort of relationship you are looking for, whether a casual date or a lifelong connection. You also have the ability to filter only paid profiles which wipes out all the fake and inactive profiles. You too should go for a premium membership, if you serious about gay dating. The site promotes an active community and boasts of forums and a well-tailored blog. However, the site itself doesn’t seem to be very active. The users count on the website is over 2 years old, which concerns us as the website doesn’t seem to be in active development. Nonetheless, GayFriendFinder is still one of the best gay dating sites, for people living in an urban scenario where there are a lot of active members around.

4. AdultFriendFinder

AdultFriendFinder is a leading online dating website for people looking for sexual encounters. The parent site of all dating platforms under the Adult Friend Finder Networks, AdultFriendFinder is a reliable and trustworthy option when it comes to gay dating and has the potential to be your best gay dating website. It is backed by a massive user base which does have a lot of hot gay dudes too.

However, it should be noted that the site is more inclined towards casual sex. Coming with an option to set up a blog alongside your profile, webcams and a lot more, it helps you express yourself to the fullest. It should, however, be noted that there is no proper matching system available on the website. You will manually have to look out for potential profiles.

5. Tinder Gay

Tinder is not a new name as far as online dating is concerned and is an extremely popular and well used online dating platform which has served as the base on which many dating platform ideas were conceived and built. Gay Tinder works like the Tinder for straight people with the main and only difference being that the content is more gay oriented and choices more for the gay people which are achieved by setting your preferences to the side you are oriented towards.

The app allows you to meet new people nearby and is said to be more fling friendly though there are many cases where the app was much more than that and you have a good chance of finding a relationship if theta is what you are looking for. You can swipe left to pass upon someone or swipe right to like someone and if they swipe right for you too, then it is a match and you can only start chatting once you have been matched with the other person.

6. Jack’d

Jack’d is a popular location-based gay dating app through which you can meet other gay and bisexual men anytime anywhere and has been made with the ail to decrease bigotry and unacceptable contents by sticking to professionalism and purpose of content which is what makes it different from the other mainstream apps. The app was launched in 2011 and today they have become really popular with a network of around 2 million guys spanning 2000 cities in 180 countries. It aims to bring together strangers with common desires and curiosity to meet new people and network and find meaningful relationships, dates and friendships through the app.

The app is rich in features like worldwide chate which allows you to search and chat with guys anywhere in the world before you get there and the multiple profile photos feature allows you to set up to 5 photos so you can see at least 5 photos of the other guy before you decide whether or not you are interested.
