Scientists have revealed why gay men are so attracted to beards

Scientists have been investigating why it is so many gay men like a guy with a beard.

There is lots of anecdotal evidence that more gay men have beards, but now there is some actual evidence.

The journal of Evolution and Human Behavior investigated the phenomena.

In a survey of 1,577 men and women from Brazil and the Czech Republic, gay men had stronger preferences for men with more facial hair.

The journal learned that men who have sex with men found people with “thicker facial hair” more attractive.

But when the study was repeated for women, the findings were not the same.

The second study found that men who were clean-shaven and those with a full beard were the less sexually attractive to women.

Meanwhile the sexiest men were those sporting heavy stubble, followed by short stubble.

Another finding suggested that, for gay men, guys with thicker facial hair make better longer-term partners.

But if you can’t grow a full beard, then don’t worry: guys are most commonly attracted to guys with similar levels of beard to themselves.

“When beardedness becomes too common, it is less attractive than when it is rare,” Dr Barnaby Dixson, from the University of Queensland, wrote.

“This may explain why fashions and trends in beardedness fluctuate over time.”

The Gay Beards: Glitter Moustaches and Flower Beards Straight out of Portland, Oregon

What’s a guy to do when he’s grown a thick, dense beard? Why, decorate it with glitter, flowers, and candy, of course! At least, that seems to be the obvious answer for two such full-bearded men…

When Brian Delaurenti and Johnathan Dahl, aka The Gay Beards, first posted a photo of themselves with both of their beards decorated with flowers, they had no idea that they were actually on the brink of a wildly successful creative endeavour. That was back in July of 2014. Today, their Instagram account totals 192K Followers and their Your Tube channel boasts over 19K subscribers – and climbing.

“There was no initial reason to grow beards,” the Portland, Oregon-based duo told us, sharing that they’ve both sported beards for almost 2 years. “But one day, a buddy of ours asked if he could put some flowers in our beards and take a few photos. We posted it to an Instagram account we made and received amazing feedback. The rest is history!”

Anyone who’s watched one of their videos can’t help but notice the honest camaraderie that Brian and Johnathan share; in fact, these elementary school best friends grew up just down the street from each other. Johnathan is now a musician (and “professional pizza slinger”) and Brian is a painter/photographer. Apparently, creativity has always united their friendship. But decorating their beards?

“The idea behind The Gay Beards formed naturally,” they said. “People were leaving such positive comments that we decided if we were going to continue putting things in our beards, it should be for the love of art and to bring a positive light to the Internet.” They are very surprised by their success and stress that they’re extremely grateful for every person who supports them.

When people occasionally recognize them from the account, the most common reaction they receive is, “You’re the glitter beard guys!” In fact, covering their beards with craft store glitter has become their “signature” decorative motif and has taken their fame worldwide. “Flower beards were already kind of a thing when we started The Gay Beards but glitter beards was an original idea to us. Messy as it is, it’s one of our favourite beards to do,” they share. Notably, the “How To Glitter Beard” video on their You Tube channel has nearly half a million views!

What do they hope that people will take away from following their account? “That when people look at our page it encourages them to be themselves. Do what makes them happy and never let anyone get in the way of that.”

Concealing sexual orientation with a beard

Another recognized usage applies to a person who serves to camouflage the sexual orientation of their companion, by being of the gender that conflicts with that orientation. [citation needed]

A media example is the episode „The Beard“ of the Seinfeld, in which Elaine Benes acts as the beard accompanying a male homosexual friend, to suggest that they have a heterosexual relationship.

Many of the reported lavender marriages of 1920s Hollywood, and the reportedly similar 1955-’58 marriage of Rock Hudson, could be cited as involving such beards (though the word in this sense is said to have arisen only in the mid-1960s.) [citation needed] Taking seriously the claim of his wife, Phyllis Gates, that she was heterosexual (or assuming she may have had no real need to avoid being seen as lesbian), and in light of the danger that Hudson’s homosexuality is accepted as having posed for his film career, it would be said that she was a beard for him, but not the reverse.

By the analogy between merkins and fake beards, a male acting as a beard for a lesbian is sometimes called a merkin.

The Gay Beards

It was close to dusk on a summer day back in July of 2014 when the very first flowers landed themselves in our beards. Something about that moment was very special for us, unforgettable in a sense. Having been best friends since we were 8 years old, both of us have developed a strong friendship and creative bond with one another. Positivity runs deep in our veins, and humor is very much the glue that holds us together. Ever since that warm day in July, we have set out on a journey to put our creativity out into the world, and do our best to give people a reason to smile. The Gay Beards has become a growing platform where we not only get to bring our beards to life, but in the process, try and fill the world with a little more love.

The Gay Beards

You become more attractive

Attraction is a matter of taste, and everyone likes different things. But when it comes to monitoring general trends, research shows that a good, healthy beard makes a guy seem more attractive right now to the majority of people surveyed. The cites a study conducted by the University of Queensland, where over 8,000 heterosexual women were asked about surveyed regarding men’s attractiveness. Results varied, of course — for example, 5 o’clock shadows were seen as better one-night stand propositions, whereas men with fuller beards were assessed as better long-term partners — but on average, the majority of surveyed women preferred guys with some scruff. Another study surveyed gay men and found that they also gave higher ratings to men with a healthy amount of whiskers. If you mostly want to join the beard club to level up your romance game, science is on your side.

Beards change people’s opinions about you

It goes without saying that growing a beard will change the way you look. However, similar to how dying your hair purple and yellow might raise a few eyebrows, having a beard also redefines people’s impression of you.

Is this good or bad? Depends on your outlook. According to Psychology Today, studies have shown that men with beards are generally regarded as more masculine, dominant, and socially mature. They are also usually regarded as more responsible, older, fatherly figures, at a glance. On the other hand, New Republic cited a 2012 study where men were photographed both bearded and clean-shaven, then told to make a range of expressions. When these photos were shown to other participants, the pictures of bearded „angry“ expressions were rated as looking way more aggressive than the angry clean-shaven ones. If you think Marvel’s Thanos was an intimidating dude in , just wait until you see his bushy purple beard in .

Clean It Up

“I feel like once the pandemic subsides and everyone is vaccinated, beards will be out of style. Beards were a long-running trend, but now we’re seeing beards poking out the sides of every face mask. We’ve all heard the stories of “maskne” (acne under face masks due to poor hygiene). We now officially associate beards with a gay man, I like the idea of waking up next to a guy and feeling his stubble or beard all over me. But as far as a look to wear on the town? This pandemic has totally canceled beards.”

“Clean-shaven is nice, so is a shadow as long as it is clean and well-groomed. The worst thing about a beard of any kind is when it’s not well-kempt or clean. In 2021, beards of all lengths are here to stay.”

A character who pretends to be another’s Significant Other in order to perpetuate a deception.

A man dated by a lesbian to make her appear straight is known as „a frock“ in British English. A frock makes a woman appear feminine much as a beard makes a man appear masculine.

Gay men who marry The Beard do this generally as an elaborate refusal to come out of the closet. They „prove“ it to themselves and others that they are not gay because they have a wife (that they never touch) so they most definitely are not leading a gay lifestyle. Other times, it’s an open arrangement with the wife in order to abide by social standards — sometimes the wife herself may be a lesbian.

Occasionally, someone’s Beard will have to be someone they’re in a Will They or Won’t They? situation with. It usually ends up pushing them closer, but gets a Snap Back at the end.

Not to Be Confused with Growing the Beard, where a show significantly improves at some point. Nor is it to be confused The Beard and The Suit setup of a technology startup, the Beard who handles the technology, and the Suit who handles the business side and stops the Beard from walking into traffic or excitedly explaining his proprietary secrets to the first person who expresses an interest.
