Best LGBT Dating Apps For The LGBT Community in 2021

Being a dating startup, if you are planning to build an app like Tinder? Or a swiping similar app like Tinder? You may have noticed the whole new wave of online dating with LGBT gay culture which is constantly gaining popularity. Now, the time is changing and developers are creating the best dating apps for the LGBT community. Herein we have curated 8 best LGBT dating apps that provide a platform for everything from hookups to long-term relationships.

Best LGBT Dating Apps For The LGBT Community in 2021

The best dating apps for gay users, since meeting people IRL is hellish

Most people have at least one horror story about online dating. It’s a rite of passage that single people love to hate.

But the horror stories look a little different for members of the LGBTQ community. On top of the classic awkward Hinge date anecdotes and screenshots of a corny bio seeping with secondhand embarrassment, gay singles deal with all sorts of alienating interactions. Baseless questioning of sexual history, harassment, and fetishization — most of it coming from cis straight people who shouldn’t have popped up in your feed in the first place — don’t exactly give one butterflies.

Still, dating apps have become crucial means of introduction for gay folks looking to settle down. A 2019 Stanford study and 2020 Pew Research survey found that meeting online has become the most popular way for U.S. couples to connect — especially for gay couples, of which 28% met their current partner online (versus 11% of straight couples).

But the Pew survey also dredged up those ugly experiences with harassment. This could be where options that bar heterosexual users, like HER and Grindr, come in. Their perfectly-tailored environments are so well-known in the gay community that they’re essentially in a league of their own.

That’s not to say that they’re in the queer dating app market alone. Apps like Zoe, Taimi, and Scruff exist. But their plateauing popularity can be attributed to similar complaints: too many scam profiles and too few legitimate users (ones within a reasonable distance to plan a date, anyway). Chappy was a promising app for gay men that shut down just as it was gaining serious traction.

And at the end of the day, „everyone“ apps are simply where masses of queer users are. Keeping Tinder on the back burner isn’t just a straight people thing, especially for those who live in less-populated areas where Grindr and HER have slim pickings. Plus, some mainstream apps do deserve credit for the steps they’ve taken to create a more inclusive atmosphere. Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge now offer lots of sexual orientation and gender identity options. OkCupid gets kudos for making that change years ago, as well as making social justice a core part of compatibility scoring — which kind of self-curates the type of people on the app.

If you’re LGBTQ and hate leaving your home, you’re not alone. Here are the best dating apps and sites that’ll maximize your opportunities while minimizing your human contact. Bless. (For the best dating apps specifically for lesbians, go here.)

The Best Free and Social Dating Apps

1. One of the best-known dating apps around. Tinder allows users to ‘swipe right’ on images of users if they’re interested in them and ‘swipe left’ if they’re not. It uses a minimal interface and bases its matches on location to the user.

2. Hinge hinges on (sorry) the fact that you have a Facebook account. Simply put, this dating app finds matches for you that already exist in your wider social network. So, anyone you chat to won’t be a stranger in the strictest sense. A good feature for women who might feel apprehensive about joining a dating app for the first time.

3. Another dating app designed with women in mind. Bumble is one of the more popular dating apps among women due to its feature that only allows women to message first. A good choice for anybody looking to make the first move!

4. Like punctuality? Then Coffee Meets Bagel might be the dating app for you. Every day at 12pm you’re sent ‘bagels’ — potential matches — and encouraged to start chatting with one of their personalised ice-breakers. Recommended as a good dating app for those who don’t want to be left on ‘read’.

5. Hily is a relatively new dating app and uses technology to match users better. Using swiping functions, likes, messages and the ability to create stories, the intelligent app learns more about you, giving you better match suggestions in the future.

6. Clover mixes and matches some interesting app features to create something unique. A pinch of traditional swiping, mixed with instant chat options, and top it all off with social mixers with no dating pressure and you’re got Clover.

7. So far Facebook’s much-awaited dating app aptly called ‘Dating’ has been very hush-hush. In 2018, they invited Wired in to discuss some of the features. Unsurprisingly, it relies on users having a Facebook account and instead of just swiping you’ll be prompted to discuss something about the users profile — a picture, an event their attending etc.

The Best Gay and Lesbian Dating Apps

8. Her is one of the most popular lesbian dating apps on the market. It has the ‘swiping’ feature that lets you accept or decline prospective partners, hence it being referred to as the ‘lesbian tinder’. After you’ve swiped ‘yes’, you can send hearts before finally matching.

9. Chappy, a merger of the word ‘choice’ and ‘happy’, gives gay men the option of filtering for short and long-term relationships in one simple app. If you’re looking for Mr Right or Mr Right Now, Chappy has you covered offering a safe, inclusive space to chat with other matches — giving the user a positive experience from a gay dating app.

10. Gay men looking for a dating app like Tinder need to look no further. Grindr is a dating app that alerts you when other members are nearby. It’s also a dating app with a social reputation as being very popular in the gay community for its high success rate.

The Best Religious Dating Apps

11. Christian Mingle is a religious dating app aimed at relationship-ready single Christians who are seeking a match who shares their values. Like the Christian Mingle site, the dating app prioritizes God-centered relationships and lets singles filter by factors such as denomination.

12. Interested in Jewish dating? Then odds are you’ve heard of Jdate, a Jewish matchmaking site that turned 20 in 2018. The site pre-dates the rise of dating apps, but in recent years they’ve joined the smartphone revolution and now you can seek marriage-minded Jewish singles in the Jdate app.

The Best Niche and Quirky Dating Apps

13. Tired of all the lovey-dovey cutesy dating apps? Then Hater might be just up your alley. It’s a simple idea really, instead of listing all the things you love on your dating profile and engaging in a passionate conversation with someone who shares your joy, just talk about things you hate. Hater will ask your opinion on various topics and you’ll be matched with someone who hates all the same things are you!

14. If music, not food, is the key to your heart then Tastebuds might be the app to find your special someone. It also mixes in some social network elements like Clover so that you can chat in a low-pressure environment. If you’re looking for friends there’s also a ‘concert buddy’ option.

15. If you’re looking to gamify your dating life then Quiz Date Live might be the dating app you’re looking for. Similar to popular reality dating shows mixed with a classic quiz format, Quiz Date Live invites featured daters who have applied to be on a live stream to other daters.

16. Following off Bumble’s lead, Pickable empowers women by giving them ultimate control of their dating apps. Pickable allows women to be totally anonymous on the app, they can browse prospective partners and only allow themselves to reveal themselves to when they want.

The Best Exclusive and Members-Only Dating Apps

17. A relatively new trend in dating apps are ones that are private or members-only. Raya only allows members who meet specific requirements i.e. having a creative industry job or being an influencer on social media. After that, you’ll be vetted by the current users before being ushered onto this exclusive mobile dating app.

18. The League is another elite dating app that requires you to provide information about yourself in order to be approved and gain access. The information isn’t anything too precious that you wouldn’t part with on any other online dating website; it includes your LinkedIn account, job title and your educational background

The Best Dating Apps for Long-term Relationships

19. Probably one of the most well-known dating apps is Promising users a chance at real, long-term success, its app isn’t too different from its desktop site. Upload your profile, get matches and meet people — simple.

20. eHarmony is another serious dating site that prefers to connect its users based on personality. With its focus on marriage, it’s a solid choice for those in their 20s or early 30s who want to upgrade to a paid dating app.

21. OkCupidOkCupid is well known for its personality test and savvy data understanding when it comes to dating. On its online dating app it allows users the freedom to express themselves, it’s very LGBTQI+ friendly with 13 different sexual orientations and 22 gender identities.

22. POFPOF (Plenty of Fish) has been around since 2003 so are experts in the dating game. They focus on long-term relationships more than some of the new dating app players. Signing up includes a lengthy ‘chemistry’ test designed to help POF give you more qualified matches.

23. ZooskRather than using a matchmaking personality test, Zoosk pulls data from your social accounts, allowing for a more efficient sign-up process. Zoosk also has a large number of members, giving new users even more opportunity to match with lots of different types of people.

RSVP is one of the most well-known dating apps in Australia. Targetted at the 25-35 demographic who are looking for a partnership that will last. With over two million members RSVP gives users plenty of opportunities to meet new people in your local area.

Oasis is another dating app that is very popular in Australia specifically. The app caters to singles across all demographics, age groups, and sexualities. Simply download the app and start chatting with members that are nearby.

EliteSingles is one of the best apps for people looking for serious, long-lasting relationships with professional singles. While appearances matter, most people know that you need more to create a relationship. The membership of the EliteSingles app is from 30-50, so with the benefit of age comes wisdom to know that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Not a social media butterfly? No worries. EliteSingles doesn’t need any of your social network information to get you started. All you need is an email address and a password to sign up.

Signing up for a dating website can be work for some people. Creating a profile, taking some nice pictures, and then you have to start searching for that perfect person. With EliteSingles we do the heavy lifting for you, we send you 3-7 matches per day so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy dating.

But how do you pick the dating app that’s right for you? If you search for dating apps you might see some articles asking ‘eHarmony vs. Match?’ this is because both of these websites serve similar members. Both websites have a huge amount of users. EliteSingles US has 173,000+ new members per month, all highly educated, professional singles looking for long-lasting love.

We cater to lesbianchildfree datingChristian dating, you name it and we probably have some members who are looking for love. The thing that unites all EliteSingles members? They all have a genuine desire to find that special someone to spend the rest of their lives with.

Grindr

Grindr, you may have heard of it? Launched in 2009 as the first ‘geosocial’ dating app (i.e. you can see who’s nearby), Grindr has grown to dominate both the actual market and the entire concept of gay hookup culture.

The general consensus is that Grindr is only for hookups, but this isn’t necessarily true. As is the case anywhere a lot of people gather, there’s something on Grindr for everyone – from one night stands and fuckbuddies to long term relationships.

That being said, if you’re looking for a brief encounter, Grindr will do the job, as it’s more of a free-for-all than some other apps with little restriction on who you can talk to. All you need to do to get started is sign up, set your preferences and scroll through guys close by. If you’re using the free version, be willing to suppress your rage at the incessant ads.

As is also the case with large gatherings of people, there’s a lot of bigotry and generally unacceptable behaviour on Grindr. A lot of this stems from the fact that users have license to be incredibly specific about their wants and desires, which apparently for some people means being specifically terrible.

Awful behaviour aside, there are a lot of pros to Grindr. Mainly, it has the most users. You can also be as anonymous as you want or as open as you’d like with your gender, preferred pronouns and status. People are also pretty trigger happy with pics, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Since a change at the top in 2016, Grindr has been on a one-app mission to be the centre of gay universe, with big events, an online magazine and a gay emoji keyboard. Basically, it isn’t going away anytime soon.

Scruff

Scruff, as the name suggests, is the hairier, bearier alternative to Grindr. The age range of users skews a little older than its main rival, and they are more uniformly of the muscular persuasion.

Scruff has been on the scene almost as long as Grindr, so it’s also amassed a large user base. As with Grindr, the amount of users has diluted its USP, so it’s not exclusively ‘scruffy’ guys on there, just mainly, and still overwhelmingly masc.

If masculinity isn’t high on your list of priorities, I wouldn’t necessarily look here. Scruff is hookup oriented, but does have a ‘match’ function if you’re looking for dates.

Being slightly more niche appeal than Grindr, Scruff doesn’t have the same critical mass of users, nor the cultural clout. However, if you see the word Scruff and don’t immediately shout ‘Oh Scruff Pit Crew’ in your best Mama Ru voice, then why are we even doing this?

Having sponsored the Pit Crew in the sixth season of Rupaul’s Drag Race, Scruff secured its position in the psyches of gay men everywhere, and it’s worth checking it out for this alone.

Jack’d

As mentioned, when you get a lot of guys together, bigotry tends to rear its ugly head and send you unsolicited nudes. Jack’d presents itself as an alternative to the divisiveness of other gay dating apps, and there’s proportionally more POC on there.

It works in much the same way as Scruff or Grindr, but with some additional features like more photos and the ability to see who’s been looking at your profile. You should be able to find both hookups or relationships on Jack’d, but it is a little more NSA friendly.

Hornet

Hornet’s USP seems to be ‘we do Grindr better than Grindr’. While Grindr’s functionality is notoriously clunky, Hornet works much better, with less intrusive ads, interesting side features like in-app articles and more photos. In practice though, you use Hornet much the same way as Grindr.

Hornet is pitched more towards being a community platform than just a gay dating app, and you’ve got the option to follow people for updates or see events and stories.

Community aspects aside, you’re more likely to find a one night stand on here than a husband. Hornet has been slowly beating out other apps worldwide through its news and content delivery, especially in Brazil, but has yet to dislodge Grindr and its other rivals from the top spot in the UK or US.

Chappy

You’re probably most familiar with Chappy from it filling every available ad space on your social media.

Chappy’s ‘USP’ is that you can slide a scale at the top of the app to select ‘Mr Right’, ‘Mr Right Now’ (clever) or ‘Mr Who Knows’ to find guys who are looking for the same. You can then swipe, Tinder style, through the filtered buffet. You have to log in through Facebook, so there’s much less room for anonymity.

Chappy is the brainchild of Made In Chelsea’s Ollie Locke, who was looking for something different from the other gay dating apps on the market. In reality, Chappy feels more like a ‘rich person decides to be entrepreneur’ kind of project, especially as most apps give you the ability to state exactly what you’re looking for, albeit in the much less fun form of ‘words’ rather than a sliding scale.

Regardless, Chappy has the backing of Bumble founder Whitney Wolf, it works pretty well and there are plenty of guys on there to swipe through. Unsurprisingly, you’ll find most of them on the ‘Mr Who Knows’ point of the scale.

Tinder

And finally, Tinder. Whereas Tinder was once thought of as Grindr for straight people, the ability to set your preferences to find other gays has made Tinder an increasingly popular choice.

Gay Tinder is to straight Tinder what Gay Twitter is to regular Twitter, i.e. the same, but gayer! You log in, set your preferences, and then swipe your way through the oncoming onslaught of men.

Tinder’s default setting is straight (eye roll), so you have to change it to find your fellow gays. With the free version, you have a limited number of swipes per day and limited access to extra features like ‘Super Likes’ and ‘Boost’.

By its nature, Tinder is geared more towards dating than hookups, although that’s not to say you can’t find both. There’s lots of guys on the platform, so you’ve got good odds of finding someone.

Lex

Ever find yourself longing for the uncomplicated days of Craigslist personals? Then opt for Lex, a no-frills app with a healthy dose of ’80s and ’90s nostalgia. Inspired by the personal ads in On Our Backs, the woman-run erotica mag, it takes a simple yet charming approach to dating in the modern age. There are no cheesy selfies, just the opportunity to write an engaging personal ad that will — hopefully — help you meet your match.

The app isn’t just for dating — members have used it to make friends, start a band, and even plan a protest, according to its founder. Give shallow selfie swiping a miss and make a real, meaningful connection, or post in the “Missed Connection” section and you might find yourself getting together with that guy you saw at the farmers market but were too shy to speak to.

The app’s design is minimalist and inclusive, allowing you to choose your pronouns and asking you to agree to its strict rules of conduct for new members before you get started. You can browse the personals or search by keyword — so finding somebody who loves pizza as much as you do is totally achievable — send private messages, and save people’s posts to reply later, when you have more time. All this, and it’s totally free to use.

Surge

Surge is, dare we say, the Tinder for gay dating. It functions similarly to Tinder, with a swipe right to like and left to reject style — there’s even a Power Message option that’s the equivalent of a Super Like. It’s quick to sign up and you can share photos from your camera roll, Facebook, or Instagram to your profile. It’s free too, and you can swipe through potential matches (a limited number each day) and start chatting without paying a penny.

We love that Surge is all about inclusivity, and their motto “No Labels” means that whoever you are, you can be yourself while searching for your ideal match.

If you decide to upgrade to Premium membership, you’ll enjoy access to features like Who Liked Me, as well as Private Mode, where you’re only visible to guys you’ve already liked, the aforementioned Power Message to get you noticed, After-Match Photos, which allows you to upload private photos only visible to your matches, and several other handy features. You can sign up for a one-, three-, or 12-month membership starting at $7 a month.

Tser claims to be “the best TS and trans dating app for crossdressers and transgender women and men.” A pretty bold claim — but judging by the app’s popularity, it may well be true. Everyone’s welcome on the app, and it’s a safe space to be yourself, whatever your gender identity. It’s free to use and there’s a clean community policy that means no pornography or nudity is allowed.

Getting started involves filling out a few personal details, adding a couple of sentences (or a few paragraphs, if you’ve more to say) about what you’re looking for from the app, and uploading a photo. If we had one criticism during signup, it’s that the photo uploading process is very slow, and sometimes causes the app to crash.

Once you’re in, you can browse profiles and search for transgender singles near you using the filters. You can message matches for free, or start a voice message chat if you prefer to hear their voice. There’s a premium subscription that gives you access to additional features and starts from $13 a month, or you can sign up for three months for $27 or six months for $46.

It’s worth noting that the user base for Tser is still pretty small — but growing by the day — so unless you live in a major city, you may not find many matches near you.

Bumble

Fans of Chappy, the gay dating site that shut down just as it was starting to peak in popularity will be pleased to hear that the app joined forces with Bumble. Bumble is committed to fighting inequality and creating a space for healthy, safe connections across the LGBTQ+ spectrum, so where better to find your match? Traditionally Bumble asked women to make the first move on their app — but when it comes to same-sex matches, either party can make the first move, and the other party has 24 hours to respond and start a chat.

When you first open the app you’re presented with the option to log in with your Facebook account or use a mobile number. You’ll set up your profile, which includes a startling amount of information, including what you’re looking for, what pets you have, and a wide range of sexual orientation and gender identity options. You also get to choose whether to display your gender identity to matches.

A new section called COVID Dating lets you set preferences for dating during the pandemic — for example, whether you’re okay with IRL dating or prefer to date virtually for now, and whether indoors or outdoors dates are your ideal. This will only be displayed to your matches, but it’s definitely a helpful way of gauging what people are open to, without having to ask. You can also connect your Instagram and Spotify to share even more about yourself with potential matches.

Bumble has a huge user base, making it easier to find matches in your area, and it’s free to use — plus the 24-hour time limit to make a connection means you’re less likely to let matches languish and be reshuffled into the deck. The recent addition of in-app voice and video chat functions, as well as the option to send audio notes, gives you plenty of ways to communicate if typing lengthy messages isn’t your thing. You can subscribe to Bumble Boost or Premium from $9 a month to access all of Bumble’s additional features.

Scruff

Scruff allows you to browse through over 15 million profiles from nearby and around the world. Targeted toward men who have, or like, a little scruff, the app gives you options to search for different types of guys. The developers at Scruff have taken lots of steps to make the app more inclusive to everyone in the LGBTQ community, from being the first to include an option for the transgender community to removing the requirement to list an ethnicity when setting up a profile. It’s pretty easy to get started — just create your profile, entering your date of birth and uploading a photo to start matching. Profiles are pretty detailed, but you don’t have to fill everything out upfront. The app operates on a familiar swipe left or right format — but we love that if you can’t decide right now, you can choose “Ask Later” to be shown the guy again tomorrow.

There are loads of cool features to help you connect, like the quiz show, where you can meet new guys and compete for a cash prize, a social calendar of LGBTQ events in your area or worldwide, and Venture, your travel companion that lets you connect with guys in your destination city before you arrive.

Scruff is a free app, but if you want access to more advanced search features, user videos, and message histories, you’ll need to pay $20 a month for Scruff Pro.

Grindr

If you’re tired of dating apps that don’t include the trans and queer communities, Grindr is a perfect solution. As the largest social networking app for gay, bi, trans, and queer people, you won’t be short of choices when looking for a date. The app uses your phone’s location to find other members nearby and sign up is quick and easy – just fill out the form or sign up with your Facebook account.

The app will show you who’s in your area, with large, high-quality pictures, so there are no surprises. Don’t want to message someone right now? Just favorite them to speak to them later. You can even browse other locations, so if you’re moving to a new city or heading away for the weekend, you can meet people before you arrive. If something goes wrong, you can easily report or block accounts – but it’s worth noting free users get a limited number of blocks; a bit of a turnoff.

Grindr is free to use, with limits. With a free account, you can only see 100 profiles in your area – and there are other limits too. To lift them, you can subscribe to Grindr XTRA or Unlimited. XTRA lets you see up to 600 profiles, remove ads, and view who’s online now, plus a range of other upgrades – and it costs $20 per month. For the top-notch experience, Unlimited lets you view unlimited profiles, browse in Incognito mode, and see who’s viewed your profile. It also unlocks expiring photo mode, where images sent expire after 10 seconds – and the handy chat translate feature that lets you communicate with those who don’t speak your language. It’s a pretty hefty investment though at $25 a month.

Tinder

Tinder is not just for straight folks — it lets you swipe right on people across the LGBTQ spectrum. Tinder has also added several new features to make it welcoming to trans and queer users. The More Genders feature gives users a wide variety of gender identity options, while the Traveler Alert feature warns users who have identified themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and/or queer when they enter a country that criminalizes this. This feature ensures your profile won’t be automatically shown when you’re traveling to one of these locations.

You don’t need a Facebook account to sign up for Tinder – but you do have to be older than 18. It’s quick to get started – just write a 500 character bio and add up to six images. There’s the option to link Tinder to your Instagram account too. Adjust your Discovery settings for who can find your profile, from distance and proximity to age range and gender identity.

Tinder operates on the now-familiar swipe right mechanism. You’ll only see a photo, name, and age for each prospective date. Tap on the photo to see some additional information – then swipe right to like them or left to pass. If you’ve fallen instantly in love, you can use a “super like” which the other person will receive instantly. If you both swipe right on each other, you’ll see a screen telling you you’ve matched and inviting you to chat. Tinder also recently adding video chat, great for getting to know each other better before meeting up, or dating during lockdown.

Tinder is free but you get limited swipes each day. To enjoy unlimited swipes and a whole host of other features, you can sign up for Tinder Plus or Tinder Gold. But the best thing about Tinder? It’s one of the most popular dating apps, so you’re more likely to meet someone you like who lives near you than on some of the other apps – and most people on the app actually want to meet up in real-life, whether for a hookup or something more.

Hornet

Boasting over 30 million registered users, Hornet is one of the world’s largest dating apps designed by the gay community for the gay community. Founded in 2011, it’s as much a social network as a dating app, enabling you to create your own news feeds, join groups, and generally immerse yourself in online gay communities. Follow those you’re interested in and see their posts, videos, and photos — and share your own in the news feed. Use the virtual travel feature to explore the world, and engage in interesting conversations about every topic under the sun in curated discussions.

Hornet makes it easy to connect with others for friendship, hookups, and relationships — just use the filters to find the right person, comment on or like their posts, or send a heartstring to make a quick intro. The app takes privacy seriously, and there’s free 24/7 support if you need it.

It’s free to use, although you can subscribe to Premium to enjoy additional features — there’s a fixed period subscription or a rolling monthly one, starting from $10 per month.

Experts weigh in on how to navigate the online dating space as an older guy

If you’re a man over 40, chances are your dating life pre-dates the mainstream advent of dating apps. You probably started dating back when people met at bars or got set up on blind dates or just settled for their classmates or coworkers, got married in their 20s, had a couple kids by 35 and then got divorced. In fact, maybe you did exactly that and that’s why you’re now looking for dating-app advice.

Whether you’re a middle-aged guy returning to the dating game after a marriage-length hiatus or a proud “never married, no kids” type, chances are you can recall a time when dating didn’t require wifi, and you may be looking for some guidance when it comes to navigating the online dating space.

While college-aged millennials were the first to thrust dating apps into the mainstream in the early 2010s, the platforms have become increasingly popular among older singles as well in recent years. After all, the oldest members of the generation that first embraced dating apps a decade ago are approaching 40. Whether you’re an older guy who’s brand new to dating apps or an aging millennial (sorry) who suddenly feels too old for Tinder, you may be wondering which dating apps are best for you, a mature adult man.

So what do I, a 23-year-old woman, know about being a man over 40 on a dating app? While I might not know much about being you, I happen to know a lot about dating you. I know which apps I’m most likely to find you on, and, in turn, which ones you’re most likely to find me on.

But since not everyone is looking to waltz into middle age with a much younger woman — or to take dating advice from one — I also tapped two expert dating coaches, Lee Wilson and Joshua Pompey, to weigh in on the best dating apps for men over 40. Here are their top three picks, and a bonus one from me.

Bumble

Both experts I spoke to named Bumble their top pick for guys over 40. ”Right now, the most popular one for older generations above 40 is Bumble,” says Pompey. “That’s one I highly recommend.”

For those unfamiliar, Bumble is an early Tinder successor that differentiates itself from the competition with its signature ladies-first model. On Bumble, women have to make the first move, and they only have 24 hours to do so.

While some straight men may find themselves initially turned off by the idea of waiting around for a woman to shoot her shot, Wilson says most men quickly come around for the simple reason that when women have to make the first move, men waste a lot less time and energy pursuing women who aren’t interested.

“It’s no secret that women often have a lot more power on these online dating sites than men, because the ratio at which women receive messages is just so overwhelmingly high,” says Pompey. With Bumble, however, men get to take a break and let interested women come to them.

“Men, in particular those over 40, really seem to like Bumble,” says Wilson. “Most of the guys tell me they like it because, when they get a message, they know she looked at their profile and she liked what she’s seen.”

You’re a busy, adult man who doesn’t have time to endlessly message a sea of potentially uninterested women. Let them come to you.

Hinge

Both Wilson and Pompey also called out Hinge as a top choice for the over-40 set. Owned by the same parent company as Tinder, Hinge has gained popularity in the dating-app space in recent years as a more sophisticated alternative for app daters who take online dating a little more seriously than the Tinder crowd.

While Hinge, the self-proclaimed “app designed to be deleted” tends to bill itself as a platform strictly for those seeking long-term relationships, I’ve found the app to be a good option for those looking to date more casually as well. Regardless of what you’re looking for, however, Hinge maintains a slightly elevated, more mature air than apps like Tinder. There are fewer fake, spammy profiles, and generally fewer weird conversations and sketchy encounters.

“Hinge does seem to take that that far more seriously, as far as making sure their profiles are legit,” says Wilson.

Essentially, compared to other mainstream dating apps, Hinge maintains a general sense of “we’re all adults here.”

Match

According to Pompey, , one of the original dating sites that pre-dates the dating app boom, is still one of the best online dating platforms out there for older singles who are ready to take dating more seriously.

“It’s interesting with the over-40 crowd, because dating apps have grown a little bit in popularity, but the online dating world for people — especially in their mid-40s and up — still leans towards the traditional sites like ,” says Pompey. “For ages above 40, I still think that is far and away the most populated with singles looking for quality relationships.”

So if you’re looking to forge a meaningful connection with a like-minded individual around your own age, sticking to the pre-Tinder classics might still be your best bet.

The League

This recommendation comes to you from neither of the experts, but rather from me, who — while not a professional — does have plenty of field experience.

The League is a dating app for adults who have their shit together. An “elite,” members-only platform, The League was designed for busy, successful people who don’t have the time to waste on endless swiping and dead-end conversations. As League founder and CEO Amanda Bradford told InsideHook last year, “Our users’ biggest currency is their time,” and The League isn’t interested in wasting it.

There’s no swiping, no endless supply of internet strangers for you to pursue. Instead, The League simply sends you three to five prospective matches per day, which you either like or pass on. If you match, you both have 14 days to make a move.

So if you’re a busy, successful adult looking to meet other busy, successful adults who have it together — at least enough to convince an exclusive dating app to let them join — The League is probably where you want to be.

Ultimately, however, Pompey maintains that you can find success regardless of what app you find yourself on.

“My theory is, you can meet somebody on any app,” he says. “It’s just a matter of putting yourself in the best position for success, and hopefully having a little bit of luck.”

OK Cupid

This app makes the first on our list, because this is such an all inclusive App that also comes in the form of a website. They have a whooping number of users from all sexual orientations making it not just safe but an authentic place to meet a single gay man or woman of your choice.

Being a state of the art app, like most dating apps, a user needs to log in and register through their social media apps like Facebook and Istagram. Even if the app’s user interface can be a little lengthy yet, because of its authentic active users this is one of the safest places for you to find your partner in like.

The small thumbnail size picture for a user on the app can be a little weird for a user but you can always click on ‘View in Large’ to get a better look of your potential partner. This App caters so well to so many different people that being Gay and having a hard time to find someone who is on the same boat has gotten easier.

Grindr

If you are queer, bi-curious, gay, and bisexual and happen to be a man, then Gridr is the app that is developed only for you. This main is aimed at gay men and has picked up quite the reputation of being pretty successful.

This app has five million active users over 196 countries. Created with a geo-location pattern, this app matches you with single gay men within your location. Like Facebook, they indicate whether a user is online or not and you can just scroll through profiles till you have met your partner or at least found someone interesting.

What’s really cool is that you can filter your partners through zip codes, meaning this app will help you find a single person in your area as soon as you register. This app is IOS and Android user friendly, and also comes in your desktop, making it impossible for you to ignore.

Scruff

If you are gay and you are a man then this app is definitely built to get you results. With 12million and more men’s profiles as active users, this app generated a lot of buzz since 2016.

Now here’s what makes this state of the art app stand out from the rest, that this is not an app to just help gay men find each other, but it has elaborated listings of enhanced events listing for gay men with early RSVP options, it also finds you single gay men in your area with their gps match finder and with interactive push messages for you to find your special partner.

Here is the best part of this app, it is global which means you can gay travel and meet exotic likeminded people of your sexual orientation from different cultures across the world. Available on IOS and Andriod this is one of the most user interactive apps on our list.

Bumble

Even if this app does not strictly say it’s for queer and gay women but its 90% users are women looking to have a connection with another woman.

This is a lot like tinder; you swipe right if you like them, left if you don’t. But the catch is,a chances are you will more gay, queer and bisexual single people here. But these are regulars, what makes this app a safe place for people and especially same sex relationships is that, you have 24 hours to reply to a potential partner. If there is no response, your message shall be deleted. That means no more unwanted notifications and messages.

Available on both IOS and Android, this is an app you can play very well with.

Tinder

Okay, so we all know Tinder is for everybody, no matter how gay or how straight you may be. You are sure to find someone you like on their very easy app. You swipe left if you don’t like them and right if you do.

This is one of the safest apps to be at, with your social media account registration, it secures your proper identity, making it easier for your Gay friends to trust you.

Elite Singles

Elite Singles is a fantastic place to meet educated and high end LGTBQ people looking to connect. If you are in to snooty education and mature partners, this is the place for you. 90% of its users come with a bachelors and masters degree and are looking to seriously date someone.

It’s a very simple interface where you register and you are asked a five point personality questions and the app will match you with people according to your information. You get sort them on distance, education, smoking etc.

If you are gay and you want to find serious encounters in dating, this is the right app for you to have.

Definitely available on both Android and IOS platforms.

But a word of caution from someone who has been on dating apps, never share your bank details with your date on the first meet or even ever for all we care. And, always let someone know where you are, location wise. Being smart goes the distance, and makes you a better candidate for someone’s love interest.

Surge offers a better experience over its competitors. Firstly, the app displays other Surge users living nearby, ONE AT A TIME – an idea that’s very user-friendly, respectful and that allows you, a Surge user, to give each other Surge user all the due consideration they deserve before you should decide to swipe either left or right. Each Surge user is able to present themselves in some considerable detail. I like that both you and your potential date both need to ‘like’ each other before communication can begin – this aspect of the app obviously gets your communication off to a flying start. The presentation of messages both sent and received is clear and light and bright. There seems to be no limit on the number of words you may use in each message (how humane!) and there is no random, inexplicable ‘clipping’ of dialogue bubbles (like there is with another well-known gay dating app!). In the world of gay dating apps, Surge is fantastic step forward – it’s no exaggeration to say that Surge is helping to make the world a better place.

Enjoying Surge

Easy to use gay dating app with simple swipe left or right on profiles (left = no. Right = yes) If you like each other it’s a match. I had a match within first few minutes and as we both liked each other, we could chat immediately. To see who likes you (if you haven’t ‘liked’ them) is part of the paid subscription. I hope they lower the prices to be more competitive with other similar apps, as it’s an excellent, easy to use app (includes location/distance from you). I’d like to see Surge gain the popularity of apps like Grindr. It’s an easy 5 stars. ?
