Charlotte Gay

Before graduating, Charlotte secured freelance radio journalist shifts which led to her first full-time role as a broadcast journalist for Global Radio.

Within a few months, she was reporting nationally for LBC and other brands across the UK’s biggest commercial network. Charlotte’s career in radio has already seen her awarded the Radio Academy’s 30 under 30 award, and several IRN award nominations.

She has since drawn on the multimedia nature of her university course to take a career turn into television and now works at ITV where she has won an RTS Flying Futures award and reported across the West Country and the Channel Islands.

Recently, she has been based in Guernsey where she has led the news coverage during the coronavirus lockdown.

Charlotte’s Best LGBTQ Bars

Ready for a night out? These gay bars are the city’s top picks.

Queen City? More like Kween City! We’ve compiled a list of Charlotte’s best gay bars below to celebrate Charlotte Pride and our diverse LGBTQ community. Just be careful with those death drops.

Charlotte’s Best LGBTQ Bars

The Scorpio

As Charlotte’s oldest gay bar, this spot on Freedom Drive must be doing something right. That something is frequent drag shows where the dance floor comes to a halt, cheap (and strong drinks) and one of the more inclusive (both by gender and race) gay bars in town. This bar is 18+ and cash only, so the crowd does tend to skew younger.

The Scorpio

The Nickel Bar

If you haven’t heard of this gay bar in Charlotte’s historic Smallwood community, it’s time to get acquainted. The Nickel Bar is popular with the city’s black LGBTQ community, throwing, arguably, the city’s best Black Gay Pride Weekend parties every July. The club oftentimes welcomes guest DJs and isn’t shy about the potency of its drinks.

The Nickel Bar

Sidelines Sports Bar and Billiards

In the mood for watching the game, throwing back a few beers and playing a round of pool? Sidelines is the (gay) sports bar for you. It’s no frills here at this South Boulevard bar near Woodlawn–and that’s what makes it great. If you want to turn the dial up a bit on the evening, luckily, Bar Argon, a gay dance club is next door.

Sidelines Sports Bar and Billiards

The Bar at 316

This bar gets packed pretty quickly, so find your spot early. Located in the historic Dilworth neighborhood in an adorable two-story home, this is one of Charlotte’s most popular gay bars. The Bar at 316 often hosts karaoke nights and drag performers in addition to its (small) dance floor. Don’t forget to check out the second-floor balcony!

The Woodshed Lounge

Located near Charlotte Douglas International Airport, The Woodshed is Charlotte’s only gay bar that caters specifically to the “bear” and leather crowds. Gather your cubs, otters, bears and pups for an evening of fun. The spot features cheap drinks, pool tables an outdoor patio and more.

Ready for a wild night? If so, Chasers should be at the top of your list. As Charlotte’s only gay, all-male exotic dance club, the dancing here is top notch. Contestants from “RuPaul’s Drag Race” often perform here as well alongside the regular dancers. Grab a seat at this spot on The Plaza in NoDa and a drink, and don’t forget to tip.

Jared Misner is a writer for . Jared also taught first grade and kindergarten in Charlotte for three years as part of Teach For America, where he fell in love all over again with “The Lorax.” He now has a Lorax tattoo on his left wrist, which he’ll happily show you.

Gay Charlotte

With more than a mile’s worth of cultural facilities all within Center City alone, it’s clear Charlotte has an ever-increasing commitment to the arts. And throughout the region, museums, historical sites, and more make for one-of-a-kind visitor experiences. Breathtaking ballets by NC Dance Theatre, awesome operas by Carolina Opera, and a wide variety of scintillating stage shows at Belk Theater or Ovens Auditorium are just a sampling of city happenings thanks to the Arts & Science Council. Renowned for its support of 62 cultural partners throughout the region, the organization ranks right up there with the best arts and culture infrastructure in the nation – second only to New York City in revenue dollars.

New developments are moving on in and up throughout Charlotte’s Center City as of late even though this bustling hub already brims with diversions like sumptuous steakhouses, paint-the-town red nightspots, and enriching museums and theaters. But public transit, new hotels, entertainment offerings, cultural diversions, and urban living alternatives are filling the horizon line day by day.

Charlotte may have lots of cranes adding to the area’s skyline, but it’s certainly not short on history. Pan for gold at the site of the nation’s very first gold rush at Reed Gold Mine. Relive a civil rights era sit-in at a lunch counter or even stroll down a recreated main street to try on a hat in an early Belk department store at Levine Museum of the New South. And plenty of historic sites like the Rosedale Plantation with its Civil War era docents and Historic Brattonsville with its Revolutionary War re-enactments make for interactive and educational experiences. For a fun take on a historical tour, hop aboard a bicycle or Segway with Charlotte NC Tours for a look at the Queen City’s past or step back in time with a horse-drawn carriage ride.

Reminders of Charlotte’s roots still stand among new office buildings and suburban homes. Check in to the historic Dunhill Hotel in the heart of Center City, originally opened in 1929 as the Mayfair Manor and a member of the Historic Hotels of America, or take in a quiet retreat at the Duke Mansion, the palatial former home of James B. Duke, of Duke University and Duke Energy. The mansion, built in 1915 and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, serves as a bed and breakfast and features the original marble floors and outdoor fountains. Step back in time with a seven-course meal at the McNinch House, the circa 1892 former home of Victorian-era Charlotte Mayor Sam McNinch and a restaurant long renowned as one of the most romantic spots in Charlotte.

The Bar at 316

Set in a beautifully renovated house, this well-loved gay bar was designed with socializing in mind, boasting several lounge-like rooms, a main upstairs bar and gorgeous balconies that provide a breezy break from the bustling interior. The crowd is delightfully diverse and friendly, as are the barkeeps who are both easy on the eyes and generous with the liquor. Popular special events take place daily and include movie night, game night and karaoke.

Hartigan’s Irish Pub

While not truly Irish and more of a sports-bar-meets-nightclub than a pub, Hartigan’s is two things for sure: wonderfully friendly and wildly fun. This no-frills neighborhood gay bar is a lot of things to a lot of diverse people, including a scrumptious restaurant for diners, a tailgating spot for Panthers fans and a dance club for late-night partiers. Phenomenal drink specials and events ranging from trivia to pudding wrestling round out the delightfully eclectic experience.

Marigny Dance Club

Boasting gorgeous decor and even more gorgeous go-go boys, Marigny Dance Club is a sensational standout on Charlotte’s gay nightlife scene. The decadence of old New Orleans is embodied by the club’s red velvet brocaded walls, lavish VIP lounge and dazzling Swarovski crystal chandelier placed dramatically over the forever-packed dance floor. Creative music mixes keep patrons in a state of dance-inspired ecstasy, enhanced by a hypnotizing lights show, delicious drink specials and dynamic special entertainment.
