Billie Eilish Responds to ‚Wish You Were Gay‘ Backlash: ‚It’s Not Meant to Be an Insult‘

Billie Eilish made headlines this week with the release of her new single “Wish You Were Gay,” but not quite for the reasons she had hoped. While fans had hoped the song would be a queer anthem, they later found the song to be offensive, with Eilish saying that she wished a boy who didn’t love her back was gay. “I can’t tell you how much I wish I didn’t wanna stay/ I just kinda wish you were gay,” she sings.

In a new interview with PopBuzz, Eilish responded to the significant backlash to her song, saying that she felt there was a miscommunication going on about her intentions. “First off, I want to be so clear that it’s so not supposed to be an insult,” Eilish said. “I feel like it’s been a little bit misinterpreted. I tried so hard to not make it in any way offensive.”

März erscheinenden Album „WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?“ vor.

Billie Eilish reveals the wild true story behind her ‘wish you were gay‘ lyrics

The meaning of Billie Eilish’s new single ‚wish you were gay’…

Billie is currently preparing to drop her highly anticipated debut album WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? (Mar 29) but has blessed fans with multiple teaser tracks in the run up to it. First she put out ‚you should see me in a crown‘, then ‚when the party’s over‘, followed by ‚bury a friend‘ and now ‚wish you were gay‘. Not only that but she’s opened up about the meaning behind it.

Billie Eilish has revealed that her new song “Wish You Were Gay” is about a man, disappointing and angering countless queer fans.

The 17-year-old “Ocean Eyes” singer unveiled the track on Monday (March 4) after a tease of the title led some fans to conclude that she might come out on the song.

But it turns out that “Wish You Were Gay” is actually about Eilish wishing that a guy who doesn’t like her back is gay.

“I just kinda wish you were gay,” she sings, “To spare my pride / To give your lack of interest an explanation.”

“I’m not your type / Maybe I’m not your preferred gender orientation,” Eilish adds.

Billie Eilish Is Tired Of Heartache On New Single ‚Wish You Were Gay‘: Listen

The main criticism of Eilish’s song came from her LGBTQ fans saying that she was queerbaiting her audience with the song’s title and ultimately fetishizing gay men and using them as props in order to get a guy that she likes.

Eilish elaborated on what the meaning of the song was, saying that she was not supposed to come off as the victim. “The whole idea of the song is, it’s kind of a joke,” she said. “It’s kind of like ‘I’m an ass and you don’t love me. And you don’t love me because you don’t love me and that’s the only reason and I wish you didn’t love me because you didn’t love girls.’”

Going even further, Eilish said that the song could be switched around and the premise would still make sense. “It could be a girl interested in a girl and maybe that girl likes girls also but she doesn’t like her back,” Eilish said. “And then it’s like ‚Well damn. I wish you were straight!‘ You know what I’m saying? It could be exactly the other way. I wish you were straight because you didn’t like me because you like boys.“

Jetzt aktivieren.

What is the backstory behind ‚wish you were gay‘?

‚wish you were gay‘ is a song about Billie being rejected by a boy and then wishing that they were gay to make the rejection feel less harsh. In the bridge she sings: „To spare my pride // To give your lack of interest an explanation // I’m not your type// Maybe I’m not your preferred gender orientation“. Opening about it on Instagram back in July 2018, Billie revealed what inspired it.

Talking to her fans, Billie said: „I wrote this song about a guy that really was not interested in me and it made me feel horrible so the song is called ‚wish you were gay‘. She then discussed it further by saying: „and that’s so not meant to be offensive in any way. It literally means I wish he was gay so that he didn’t like me for an actual reason.“

Although ironically the boy Billie fancied turned out to be gay. „and guess what he just came out to me like a couple weeks ago“. She then joked: „so I wrote the song and made him fuck a dude.“ and said: „I’m fucking proud bro except not really though because I was really into him, like so into him, he’s so hot oh my god.“

Stunning right? Nothing tugs our heartstrings more than a touching ode to unrequited love. ‚wish you were gay‘ is the fourth track from WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?. Given the quality of all the tracks from the album so far, it looks like Billie is about to release one of the best records of the year.

We can’t wait to hear it in full at the end of the month.

Billie Eilish’s ig stories scream gay to me or whatever..?

Born on December 18, 2001 (age 19 years), Los Angeles, California, United States, Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell is an American singer-songwriter. She first gained attention in 2015 when she uploaded the song “Ocean Eyes” to SoundCloud, which was subsequently released by the Interscope Records subsidiary Darkroom.

About “wish you were gay”

As Eilish explained in an Instagram livestream, “wish you were gay” is about how it felt for her to be rejected by a boy she liked. At the time, Billie thought he didn’t like her because she was a “shitty person.“ She wanted some other reason for him not liking her, such as him being gay. Ironically, after she wrote this song, she found out he really was gay after all.

Eilish made an Instagram post with a small snippet of the song the day before its March 4, 2019, release.

She also revealed on Instagram that it took her three years to release the song once it was written. However, a demo version circulated for many years before its official rerecording and professional release in 2019.

Eilish addressed accusations of homophobiaPop Buzz interview.

What have the artists said about the song?

I wrote this song about a guy that really was not interested in me and it made me feel horrible so the song is called ‘wish you were gay’. And that’s so not meant to be offensive in any way. It literally means I wish he was gay so that he didn’t like me for an actual reason.

And guess what he just came out to me like a couple weeks ago. so I wrote the song and made him fuck a dude. I’m fucking proud bro except not really though because I was really into him, like so into him, he’s so hot oh my god.

In an interview with Zane Lowe for Beats 1, Eilish added;

What has Finneas said about the production on the track?

In an interview with Urban Outfitters, Finneas revealed:

On Billie’s song, “wish you were gay,” a part of the snare is [cracks knuckles]. It’s our knuckles cracking. That’s kinda weird. I feel like if that were somehow known before people listen to the song, they’d be all distracted by it but because it just is a sound, people are like “yeah, that’s a cool snap sound” and I’m like “yeah, it’s our knuckles popping.”

Why does Billie count down in the verses?

FINNEAS, Billie’s brother, actually came up with the idea of counting down from six in the first verse and then counting down from twelve to six in the second verse. He stated in “A Snippet into Billie’s Mind – wish you were gay”:

We had that whole number sequence that I thought would be a funny interesting way… like, you need twelve steps to quit somebody or get over them. Like stop being addicted to a person.

Eilish admitted to being in love twice and being hurt by love

Billie Eilish’s first love was singer Justin Bieber. It’s a love shared by many teenagers, but Eilish’s love for Justin bordered on obsession. Her mom, Maggie Baird, revealed on Eilish’s Apple Music show Me & Dad Radio that she considered taking Billie to therapy to get to the root of her obsession with the Sorry hitmaker. Billie told that she doesn’t want her fans to feel about her what she felt about Bieber.

“I do not mean to be putting anybody in the position I was in,” she told the publication. “That shit hurts.” Closer to home, Billie fell in love twice: Once with a guy who didn’t love her back and another time with a boy who didn’t treat her well. Billie rejects the notion that love can’t hurt young people, because she fell victim to love twice. She told NME:

“When older people say, ‘What do you know about things like love?’ I know more about it than you do because I am feeling it for the first time right now, whereas you haven’t felt that for a long time. That doesn’t mean it is any less powerful, but it definitely a different feeling.”

Billie’s unrequited love was the subject of her controversial song, Wish you were gay. She told Billboard that she didn’t mean to cause controversy when she sang that she wished that the boy who didn’t love her back was gay. The polarizing song received praise and condemnation in equal measure. Billie talked to Billboard about the message in the song:

“I grew up with this girl that was a best friend of mine, and she liked girls, and when we made this song, she loved it because she was in love with a girl who didn’t like girls. It’s the same kind of thing. I wish you were gay.”
